Best Time to Ski in Australia

Skiing in Australia

Australia’s ski season usually runs from June to October, when winter arrives in the Southern Hemisphere.

During these months, snow lovers travel Down Under to enjoy the slopes, whether they’re learning to ski for the first time or looking for fresh powder and more challenging runs.

The best time to visit depends on your skiing experience, budget and the kind of snow conditions you prefer.

Australian Ski Season

Most Australian ski resorts begin opening around the June long weekend and continue operating until early October, depending on snowfall and weather conditions.

The main ski areas are located in the alpine regions of New South Wales and Victoria, making them popular choices for a winter getaway.

Best Time for Powder Snow

Mid-July to late August is generally the peak of Australia’s ski season. Snowfall is often more consistent during this period, creating better conditions for skiing, snowboarding, freestyle activities and cross-country skiing.

Major resorts typically have more runs, lifts and facilities operating, giving visitors a wider range of options on the mountain. However, this is also a busy period, so it’s worth booking accommodation and lift tickets early.

Best Time for Beginners: Spring Skiing

By September, spring begins to arrive in Australia and ski resorts tend to become less crowded as the season winds down. Prices may be more affordable, while the snow often becomes softer as temperatures rise.

These conditions can be more comfortable for beginners practising turns and learning to control their speed, although snow quality varies with the weather.

Some resorts also hold spring festivals, ski carnivals and end-of-season celebrations, making September a fun time to enjoy the alpine atmosphere even if you don’t plan to ski every day.

Our short family trip to Mt. Buller in Melbourne, Australia was an absolute blast! From start to finish, it was filled with adventure, laughter, and unforgettable memories. The journey to Mt. Buller itself was breathtaking. The drive through the Victorian countryside was a fantastic prelude to the mountain adventure that awaited us. As we arrived at Mt. Buller, we were greeted by a winter wonderland of snow-covered peaks. It was our first time experiencing snow, and we couldn't have asked for a better introduction. Mt. Buller is a fantastic destination for beginners and experienced skiers/snowboarders alike. We took lessons and had a blast learning to glide down the slopes. The instructors were patient and helpful, making it a fun learning experience for everyone. Even if you're not into skiing or snowboarding, there are plenty of opportunities for snow play. We had snowball fights, built snowmen, and went tobogganing. It was pure joy to watch the kids and adults alike relishing in the snow.

After changing into your ski equipment, you can happily swipe your card to enter the gate, take your skis on the cable car to the top of the ski slope, and then slide all the way down. It’s so much fun, I’m looking forward to going there next time

A Must-Read for First-Time Skiers in Australia: Gear and Budget-Saving Guide

Skiing in Australia

Should You Rent or Buy Ski Equipment?

If this is your first ski trip to Australia or you only ski occasionally, renting equipment at the resort or near the mountain is usually the more affordable and hassle-free option.

Most Australian ski resorts offer convenient rental packages, so you can get most of your essential gear in one place, including:

  • Skis or snowboard
  • Ski boots or snowboard boots
  • Ski poles
  • Insulated ski jacket and snow pants
  • Safety helmet

However, some personal items may not be included in rental packages, so it’s best to bring your own where possible:

  • Ski goggles: Protect your eyes from wind, snow and UV rays.
  • Waterproof ski gloves: Keep your hands warm and dry while skiing.
  • Face covering or neck warmer: Help shield your face from cold winds and sun exposure.
  • Thick ski socks: Provide extra warmth and comfort inside your ski boots.
✅Tips: If you’re travelling from Singapore, check your resort’s rental packages before departure so you know what’s included and can avoid bringing unnecessary bulky items.

Three Money-Saving Tips for Skiing in Australia

Buy your lift pass (cable car ticket) in advance

Skiing in Australia

During Australia’s busy ski season, purchasing lift tickets directly at the resort can cost more. To get better value, book your tickets ahead of time through the resort’s official website or Trip.com.

Early bookings may offer savings, and some resorts also have accommodation packages that include lift passes, helping you save on your overall ski holiday.

Staying in small town at the foot of the mountain is more cost effective

Stay at the foot mountains

Staying right by the ski slopes is convenient, but ski-in/ski-out accommodation often costs more.

If you want to keep your Australia ski trip within budget, consider staying in nearby towns such as:

  • Jindabyne: A popular base for visiting Perisher and Thredbo.
  • Mansfield: A convenient option for travellers heading to Mount Buller.

From these towns, you can drive to the ski resorts or take available shuttle services. Accommodation may be more affordable, with a wider range of places to choose from.

This can be especially worthwhile if you’re planning a longer ski holiday and want to save on lodging costs.

Snow chains are a must-have if you're driving

Snow chains

If you plan to rent a car and drive to an Australian ski resort, make sure you understand the local snow-chain requirements before setting off:

Two-wheel-drive (2WD) vehicles may need to carry snow chains and fit them on designated roads when required by road authorities.

It’s best to check the requirements for your chosen resort and arrange snow chains with your rental company before driving into the mountains.

During the ski season, vehicles may be checked at access points, and you could be turned away if you don’t meet the requirements.

Always check the latest road conditions and follow the instructions on snow-chain signs.
