Iwappara Ski Resort offers a variety of runs, from wide, gentle slopes to more advanced terrain, so skiers of all ability levels can find their perfect fit.
The resort is also well equipped, with lifts, gear rentals, and ski lessons, making it great for visitors of all ages—even families traveling with kids!
Plus, there are several hot springs and plenty of local specialties around the resort, so you can unwind after a day on the slopes and feel the magic of Japan’s snow season.
When is the best time to visit Iwappara Ski Resort?
The best time to ski at Iwappara Ski Resort is from December through March. During this stretch, the snow conditions are steady and the quality is excellent—perfect for skiing and other snow activities.
From late December to February, snowfall is at its heaviest, and the runs are blanketed in plenty of fluffy powder, so you don’t have to worry as much about hard falls. If you want to avoid the crowds, aim for mid-January or early March, when there tend to be a bit fewer visitors.

Safety requirements are strictly enforced
Whether you're a coach or a student, all advanced snowboarders must wear a board leash; those who don't may have their lift tickets confiscated.
💫Top highlight: From mid-mountain down, you’ll find several restaurants and cozy lodges tucked right in the middle of the ski runs—there’s no road access, so you’ll need to walk into the ski area, and the only way to move your luggage is via the lodges’ electric snow carts. These features make Iwappara Ski Resort a popular winter getaway. There’s also a family-friendly kids’ play area and sledding, so if you’re planning a family trip, you can head here with confidence and enjoy yourselves!
How can I get cheaper flights to Iwappara Ski Resort?
Wondering how to get to Iwappara Ski Resort with the best bang for your buck? Niigata Airport is the closest to Iwappara Ski Resort, but because there aren’t many flights from Changi Airport, fares tend to be higher; still, if you spot a good promotion, flying into Niigata can save you travel time.
Generally, I recommend flying to Tokyo instead—there are multiple nonstop options from Taoyuan with several airlines, making it a convenient gateway to Iwappara Ski Resort. Check the Trip.com website to find the best deals and the highest-value fares to Tokyo or Niigata.
Getting from Niigata Airport to Iwappara Ski Resort

Japanese Triple Room With Natural Hot Spring Bath
Yukinohana Onsen Ryokan was a perfect experience! The room had its own private onsen with natural, mild spring water, and the environment was serene and clean. The staff were kind and attentive. Both the breakfast and dinner kaiseki meals featured fresh ingredients and authentic flavors. It's conveniently located not far from the station, making travel easy. The public open-air bath offered a fantastic view, and after a soak, my body and mind felt completely relaxed. This was the most satisfying accommodation of my trip to Nagaoka, and I will definitely come back again!

Japanese Double Room
This is a hotel I'd definitely stay at again. It's super close to Yuzawa Station, just a 3-minute walk away. All the good restaurants in town are basically right around here. The room was really comfortable, and they even provided freshly ground coffee and a great selection of tea sets so you could brew your own. The hot spring was fantastic; the public bath was already so relaxing, and the private baths were even better – free and no reservation needed! Breakfast was also delicious, though the portions were a bit small. And there's free late-night ramen available, which tasted amazing.
Iwappara Ski Resort Accommodation #2 | Hotel Futaba
Hotel Futaba is about a 10-minute walk from Echigo-Yuzawa Station and close to Iwappara Ski Resort. The hotel runs a shuttle to and from Echigo-Yuzawa Station: from the hotel to the station it departs every 30 minutes, while rides from the station to the hotel require advance reservation.
There’s also on-site parking, so travelers renting a car don’t have to worry. The breakfast buffet offers plenty of variety, and the hotel’s public baths are on the 6th and 7th floors. There are private hot spring baths, too—perfect for anyone looking to truly unwind.
Hotel Futaba, also known as Futaba Ryokan, is one of the top-rated hotels in Echigo Yuzawa. It's a yellow building, and from the large glass windows in the lobby lounge, you can see a magnificent mountain waterfall, which is perfect for photos. This same view is also accessible from the hot spring baths on the second floor. The hot springs offer a great variety of baths, and the water quality is excellent. The 'one night, two meals' plan was unexpectedly delicious and highly recommended. To get there from Echigo Yuzawa Station, turn right upon exiting and walk along the street for about 5 minutes. Then, turn left onto a small road and walk uphill a bit until you see the yellow building with the large 'Futaba' sign on its entrance.

Japanese-Style Room
Still pretty good. The dinner was especially excellent. There was so much food, we couldn't even finish it all. The first night was even more lavish, with snow crab and Wagyu beef, but I forgot what we had on the second night. The onsen had many different pools, and I tried them all over the two days – it was so relaxing! I really want to go again.

Japanese-Style Room
Absolutely loved this onsen hotel! The Japanese-style room was really spacious, with separate areas for the traditional Japanese setup and Western beds. The room was spotless, and both breakfast and dinner offered a great variety of delicious food. The staff were all incredibly attentive; even with their limited English, they went out of their way to help me with all my questions. There are four onsen baths on the 6th and 7th floors, each with both indoor and outdoor pools. The two onsen on the 6th floor even have special medicinal baths, which were so relaxing. The scenery is beautiful, and there are designated times for men and women to use the facilities.

Standard Japanese-Style Room 16 To 20 Sq M
This hotel is quite popular, and I managed to book it two months in advance at a great price, which included breakfast. I highly recommend the traditional Japanese tatami rooms – they're spacious, have fantastic views, and I even got lucky enough to capture a photo of the 'sun-kissed golden mountain'! Plus, the hotel offers a dedicated shuttle service to and from the station at set times, and their dinner was unexpectedly superb. We had a private room for our Japanese meal, which was both refined and delicious. There are over 10 types of hot springs (onsen) available, and they were clean and not crowded. All in all, I highly recommend this place.

Iwappara Ski Resort Accommodation #3 | Echigo no Oyado Inamoto
Echigo no Oyado Inamoto is just about a 3-minute walk from Echigo-Yuzawa Station, close to Iwappara Ski Resort, and there’s a convenience store right across the street. The hotel has an authentic Japanese vibe, blending tatami rooms, Japanese meals, and hot springs so guests can soak up true Japanese culture.
It’s easy to reach and offers free parking, making it great for travelers with a car. The inn has a large public bath and an open-air hot spring, so after a day on the slopes we could truly unwind and enjoy that relaxed vacation vibe.
Japanese-Style Standard Room With Tatami, 10 Tatami Mats Or More-Non-Smoking, No View, Capacity: 5 People
I stayed for one night and two days, with breakfast included but no dinner. There are baths on the first and third floors. The first-floor bath has a larger washing area, so it's best to wash there and then relax in the bath on the third floor. From the third-floor open-air bath, you can see the mountains towards Echigo-Yuzawa Station. On a clear day, the mountains are impressively large, and even on a cloudy day, it feels like you're in the clouds, making it enjoyable regardless of the weather.
Since dinner wasn't included, I asked for recommendations for nearby restaurants and was given two suggestions. I visited one of them and was very satisfied with the dinner.
Breakfast consisted of Koshihikari rice cooked in a pot and local side dishes. These included stir-fried wheat gluten and bracken, kirizai (a type of vegetable dish), and spicy chili miso. The rice was especially delicious.
After breakfast, there was a coffee service in the lounge, which I enjoyed at my leisure. The inn is large, so the interior is spacious, and the view of the courtyard is also nice.
After check-out, I was able to leave my luggage, which was very helpful as I could sightsee hands-free until my Shinkansen train.

Barrier Free Japanese-Western Mixed With Bath, City View
This hotel was very conveniently located, with easy access from Echigo-Yuzawa Station, making it perfect for sightseeing and getting around. The interior had a calm, traditional Japanese atmosphere, allowing for a truly relaxing stay. The hot spring, in particular, was wonderful and really helped to soothe away the fatigue from my travels. For dinner, we were served dishes featuring Niigata's local ingredients, and the deliciousness of the rice was especially memorable. The staff's polite and attentive service was also very pleasant. This is definitely a place I'd want to stay at again if I visit Yuzawa in the future.

This was the biggest room I've ever stayed in on my Japan trip. It was clean and spacious. The staff spoke Chinese and gave helpful advice. The toiletries were complete, clean, and inviting. The location is very close to the JR station, and there's a Family Mart right in front of the hotel, which is super convenient. I highly recommend it and would definitely stay here again.

The room is very large with its own toilet and bathtub. You may also use their private onsen at a reasonable price, but unfortunately the onsent wasn’t hot enough. Breakfast and dinner are both tasty and large in portion. Overall a very high CP
hotel for a ski trip.
The hot springs near Iwappara Ski Resort each have their own unique charm, from convenient locations to traditional Japanese ambiance, meeting everyone’s needs and letting you fully unwind after a day on the slopes.

Yuzawa Toei Hotel boasts a great location, just about an 8-minute walk from Echigo-Yuzawa Station. Known for its "Large Rock Open-Air Bath," it lets you gaze up at the starry sky at night and soak in snowy views in winter, and it also offers separate public baths for men and women. Komako-no-Yu is a public hot spring bathhouse about a 20-minute walk from Echigo-Yuzawa Station. Named after Komako, the heroine in Yasunari Kawabata’s Snow Country, it has a nostalgic Japanese architectural style, and there’s also a tatami lounge inside where travelers can relax. The water here is a sodium-calcium chloride spring that helps soothe neuralgia, muscle pain, and joint pain. The bathing fee is 500 yen for adults and 250 yen for children.
