I recently spent some of my leave checking out Bonifacio in Southern Corsica. Working as airline ground staff back in Chiang Mai, I'm used to being on my feet all day, but this place is a whole different level of leg workout.

Let’s start with the basics: the location is stunning, no doubt. The old town is built right on the edge of these massive 70-meter white limestone cliffs looking over the Mediterranean. If you like history and old buildings, the medieval vibes here are legit—the town dates all the way back to 830 AD. But here’s the reality: the cobblestone streets are uneven, crowded, and the restaurants in the main tourist squares are overpriced. Do yourself a favor and wander into the quieter side alleys if you want a decent meal without the tourist tax.

Now, the main event: the King of Aragon’s Staircase. It’s 187 steps carved directly into the cliff face at a steep 45-degree angle. Here is how the process actually goes: you have to buy a ticket to go down, they hand you a helmet for safety, and then you start the descent. Going down is fine, but remember—what goes down must climb back up. Climbing those steep, narrow steps back up in the heat is brutal. If you have knee issues or hate heights, skip it. You can get equally good views of the cliffs for free by just walking along the hiking paths at the top.

Some practical tips if you plan to visit:
1. Wear real shoes. I saw people trying to climb the steps in flip-flops, which is just asking for an accident. The stones are slippery.
2. Buy your water at a supermarket before you head up to the old town. The shops near the cliffs charge ridiculous prices.
3. If you want the best views of the cliffs without the sweat, just take one of the boat tours from the marina. It’s much easier on the legs.

Actually, you guys know I’m usually a mountain person. Give me a green trail any day and I’m happy. But during my last break, I ended up in Bonifacio, right at the southern tip of Corsica, and man... those white cliffs are something else entirely.

We’re talking about massive 300-meter-high limestone cliffs dropping straight into the Mediterranean. To be honest, I didn't even pack my heavy-duty hiking gear for this trip—just had my regular beat-up trail shoes and a basic water bottle, but that was more than enough to do the 1500-meter coastal walk.

When you stand right at the edge, the wind is just crazy (in a good way!). As a yoga teacher, I always tell my students to focus on their breath, but standing there? The view literally takes your breath away first, haha! It’s so quiet and vast. Apparently, this place was even mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey. Walking along the path, looking at the ancient town literally dangling over the cliff edge, you can totally see why. It feels like you're stepping into some ancient myth.

My advice? Don't rush it. I spent hours just walking and rambling along the trail. If you can, hang around until late afternoon. When the sun starts to go down, the golden light hits those white cliffs and everything just glows. It’s the perfect spot to just sit down, do a bit of quiet meditation, and watch the waves. Seriously, if you ever find yourself near Corsica or even Sardinia (it's just a short ferry ride away, you can practically see it), you have to check this out. Truly spectacular.
