This place has gone through four eras (late Qing Dynasty, Beiyang Government, National Government, and the People's Republic of China), inheriting the Bashu drama culture and leading the urban life of Chengdu. The site was formerly known as the "Laolang Temple" built in 1795 and shared by actors.In 1908, Zhou Xiaohuai, the general manager of Sichuan Industrial Promotion Department, worked with Chengdu General Chamber of Commerce, the Education Commissioner's Office, and the General Police Department to file a case with the Sichuan Governor's Office and set up the Opera Improvement Association, which was located at the Laolang Temple on Huaxing Main Street. In the same year, in order to promote the improvement of Sichuan opera, Fan Kongzhou, the assistant of Chengdu General Chamber of Commerce, initiated and negotiated to "transfer the site of the garden to Yuelai Company for the actors to reform the opera and to make a living forever", taking the meaning of "nearby and faraway" and pooling the capital of Yuelai Company to build the first new theater with modern facilities in Sichuan at the original site of "Laolang Temple", named "Yuelai Tea Garden".

In 1949, the People's Republic of China was founded, and the ancient Sichuan opera art ushered in a new spring. In 1954, the government rebuilt Yuelai Tea Garden, named it Jinjiang Theater after Du Fu's "Jinjiang Spring Comes to Heaven and Earth". In 1959, Chengdu Sichuan Opera Troupe and part of the second and third troupes of Sichuan Sichuan Opera Troupe merged at Jinjiang Theater to form Chengdu Sichuan Opera Troupe. In the 1960s, in order to establish the theater brand, Chengdu Sichuan Opera Troupe concentrated the strength of the whole theater to create many classic repertoires. In the long-term exquisite performances, many Sichuan opera stars have emerged. Since the reform and opening up, the stage of Jinjiang Theater has been a gathering of famous Shengdanjingmochou, Kungaohu and Lantern. A large number of excellent repertoires were born here, and many Sichuan opera artists achieved success here. "Going to Jinjiang Theater to watch a play" has become a cultural landscape agreed upon by the people of Chengdu.

In 1997, the 8th Session of the 8th CPC Chengdu Municipal Committee decided to rebuild the historic Jinjiang Theater. In 2001, it was completed and renamed the "Sichuan Opera Art Center", becoming the first comprehensive cultural venue in China named after a type of opera and focusing on opera performances. As one of the landmark projects of Chengdu's spiritual civilization construction, the center includes Jinjiang Theater, Yuelai Tea Garden, Sichuan Opera Museum and other venues, forming an artistic and cultural pattern of "Lao She Teahouse in the north and Yuelai Tea Garden in the south". Chengdu Sichuan Opera Art Center and Jinjiang Theater is a vast stage that embraces all rivers and blooms all flowers. Excellent plays are performed, spread and preserved here; generations of Sichuan Opera artists are cultivated, grown and become famous here; batches of audiences appreciate and enjoy Sichuan Opera here; many domestic and foreign art masters appear here and show their charm. This "century-old store" has cultivated many winners of the Plum Blossom Award and Wenhua Award. The spark of Sichuan Opera has spread from here to spread the charm of Bashu drama art to all parts of the country, even to Asia, Europe, North and South America, Africa, Oceania and many other countries and regions.

Today, this Sichuan Opera Art Center, which has both rich historical connotations and great contemporary beauty, stands tall on the time-honored and modern Huaxing Street. From "Laolang Temple" to "Yuelai Tea Garden", from "Jinjiang Theater" to "Sichuan Opera Art Center". For more than a hundred years, Sichuan Opera artists have been steadfast on the foundation built by their artistic predecessors, and have passed on their original aspirations from generation to generation, allowing the Sichuan Opera Art Building to shine on Huaxing Street. This "century-old store" rooted in the old city of Chengdu and witnessing the history of Sichuan Opera promotes Chengdu's profound historical accumulation and cultural charm, and continues the root memory of Tianfu culture in the process of the historical and cultural city moving towards a world cultural city. With the heritage of Sichuan Opera, it inherits the three thousand years of Shu culture and broadcasts the artistic style of the new era. For more than a century, Sichuan Opera artists have had a unique style on the red carpet, highlighting the changes in history and performing all kinds of life, condensing and rising into the Chinese righteousness and the truth, goodness and beauty of the world.
