One-to-one Vision-Care Plan

Take the first step toward clearer vision at SEOUL SHINSEGAE EYE CENTER.

1) What is SMILE?

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) uses a femtosecond laser to create and remove a lenticule within the corneal stroma through a small incision typically around 2 mm*. For appropriately selected candidates, this approach may minimize disturbance to the corneal surface while correcting refractive error, with visual quality depending on individual conditions and physician assessment.

2) Who may be suitable (subject to exam)

  • Those seeking a quick return to daily activities
  • Those who prioritize comfort during the process
  • Individuals with dry-eye symptoms who wish to consult a doctor
  • People who prefer a small-incision option or have concerns about sports/impact

3) Method characteristics (industry view)

SMILE is commonly regarded as one of the third-generation refractive options. It differs from traditional LASIK/PRK in incision size and factors related to corneal flaps. Final suitability is based on corneal parameters, lifestyle, and visual needs as assessed by the physician.

4) Basic flow (for reference)

Step 1 — Comprehensive eye evaluation; assessment of suitability and parameter planning.

Step 2 — Through a small (~2 mm*) incision, a femtosecond laser creates and removes a lenticule within the corneal stroma.

Step 3 — Typically no suturing is required. Your doctor will provide post-care guidance and schedule follow-ups.

5) SEOUL SHINSEGAE EYE CENTER Highlights (Custom Low-Energy SMILE)

  • Technology & parameter management: Uses the ZEISS VisuMax 500 kHz femtosecond laser; experience-based nomogram settings tailored to corneal thickness and refractive error, aiming to balance stability with efficient procedure time and recovery experience.
  • Double centration check: Precise measurement of corneal vs. pupillary centers, with surgeon verification immediately before the procedure to support accurate centration and individualized planning.
  • Low-energy parameter strategy: Where appropriate and subject to medical evaluation, a relatively low-energy setting may be used to promote a smooth interface and stable performance; exact parameters are individualized.
  • Continuous care by the same team: Experienced refractive surgeons provide end-to-end care—evaluation, personalized explanation, procedure, and follow-ups—for continuity and clarity.
  • Dedicated clean environment: Performed in a dedicated refractive suite with validated sterilization systems (ethylene-oxide and steam), in line with local requirements.

* The medical team at SEOUL SHINSEGAE EYE CENTER has completed specialized training on the ZEISS SMILE technique.

* Incision length and parameters vary by individual and are determined after examination.
