The Western Thousands Buddha Grottoes
The Western Thousands Buddha Grottoes is an important component of Dunhuang's artistic treasure trove, named for its location west of the Mogao Caves (Thousand Buddha Grottoes). Carved into the cliffs of the Dang River Valley, its construction may predate or coincide with the Mogao Caves. The surviving caves preserve precious murals and painted sculptures spanning a millennium from the Northern Wei to the Uighur periods. The most distinctive feature of these murals lies in the layered superposition of pigments and painting styles from different dynasties on the same wall surface, harmoniously coexisting. Dubbed the "Time Sandwich," they vividly showcase the Chinese cultural concept of "harmony in diversity" and artistic fusion.
Yang Guan
