National Maritime Museum of China

4.5/5
4.2k reviews
The National Maritime Museum of China is located on the shore of the Bohai Sea in Tianjin Binhai New Area. It is a comprehensive maritime museum integrating collection, exhibition, research, and education, often referred to as the "Forbidden City on the sea." The white streamlined main building stretches along the coast, resembling a giant ship docked by the shore from afar. With the vast sea outside, the architecture itself is a noteworthy landmark worth stopping by. The museum's exhibitions revolve around the theme of "the ocean and humanity," with each of the six exhibition areas and dozen-plus halls offering unique highlights. In the "Ocean today" hall, a 9 m-long whale shark specimen is astonishing in scale, while a plastinated giant squid specimen stretches its slender tentacles. Together with rare specimens like a pregnant shark and thousands of other marine life specimens, they showcase the diversity of ocean life with striking visual impact. "Ancient oceans" traces Earth's origins, connecting billions of years of evolution through trilobite and ichthyosaur fossils. "Age of dinosaurs" recreates Mesozoic landscapes of sea, land, and air, where ichthyosaur and pterosaur fossils alongside dinosaur models are particularly popular with children. "Chinese maritime civilization" and "From sails to stars" chronicle China's journey from ancient navigation to modern scientific expeditions. The "Ocean and astronomy" hall with its starry dome and the interactive experience zone demonstrating the power of marine disasters are also crowd favorites in the museum. The museum's content density is remarkably high, and a thorough visit requires at least half a day. It is recommended to follow the order from the first floor upward, starting with ancient fossils before moving to modern marine exhibits. Those interested in paleontology, marine life, or maritime history will all find something to enjoy.Tianjin · 50.1km from downtown

The Italian Style Town of Tianjin is located in Hebei District of Tianjin. It has more than 200 Mediterranean-style buildings in its vicinity and was formerly known as the only concession outside of Italy. Strolling around that neighbourhood feels like you are actually walking in a romantic European town. Tianjin Museum

Tianjin Museum is located in Hexi District and serves as Tianjin's primary comprehensive museum, making it an ideal place to learn about the city. The museum boasts an extensive collection, including jade artifacts, porcelain, calligraphy, and paintings. Visitors can admire cultural relics such as the "Snow Scene and Cold Forest" painting, the yellow jade pig-dragon, the Sui Dynasty white-glazed double-dragon-handled linked belly vase, and the Western Zhou Dynasty Taibao Ding. Tianjin Museum has five floors, with each of the first three floors dedicated to a themed exhibition hall, while the fifth floor serves as a combined exhibition space featuring several special displays. Exhibits showcasing Tianjin's history and culture include the "Origins of Tianjin's Culture" hall on the first floor, the "Tianjin Through a Century" hall on the third floor, and the "Tianjin Folk Art Collection" special display on the fifth floor. Other highlights include the "Museum Collection Highlights" hall on the second floor, the "Cultural Relics Donated by Tianjin Collectors" special display on the fifth floor, and several thematic exhibitions featuring ceramics, paintings, calligraphy, and jade artifacts. With over 200,000 exhibits in total, the collection is exceptionally rich. In addition to these permanent exhibitions, the museum frequently hosts temporary exhibitions—be sure to visit if you happen to encounter one during your trip. Inside the museum, you can listen to guides about the artifacts, which is very convenient. For a more in-depth experience, you can also hire a guide, but reservations must be made by phone at least three days in advance. A simple tour of the entire museum takes approximately 2–3 hours, while a thorough exploration may require half a day or even longer. The "Origins of Tianjin's Culture" exhibition hall is located on the right side of the first-floor lobby, summarizing over ten thousand years of Tianjin's history from the Paleolithic Age to the mid-to-late Qing Dynasty. Through pottery, bronze ware, iron artifacts, and other locally unearthed relics accompanied by explanatory texts and images, it showcases Tianjin's development from barren land to canal city and then to regional hub. This is the place to explore Tianjin's ancient history. The "Treasures of the Collection" exhibition hall on the second floor is the museum's highlight showcase, featuring dozens of Tianjin Museum's most exquisite artifacts. Each piece is a masterpiece, with special attention deserved for the Western Zhou Dynasty Taibao Ding tripod and the Sui Dynasty white-glazed twin-dragon-handled linked vase. The "Century of China Through Tianjin" exhibition hall is located on the third floor, showcasing Tianjin's century-long journey from 1804 until the founding of New China. As Tianjin was once a major industrial and commercial city in northern China and a gateway to the world, it earned the saying "To understand China's modern century, look to Tianjin." The hall features lifelike recreations of Tianjin's streets, making it fascinating to stroll through the "alleys." Visitors can also explore displays of "Western imports" like vintage Coca-Cola billboards from old Tianjin, offering a glimpse into the city's past. Several special exhibitions are housed on the fifth floor, including the Tianjin Collectors' Donated Artifacts Exhibition, Tianjin Folk Art Display, Ancient Chinese Jade Exhibition, Yangzhou Painting School Masterpieces, Ming-Qing Blue-and-White Porcelain Exhibition, and Shanghai School Paintings. The galleries showcase abundant calligraphy, paintings, jade artifacts, and porcelain, with "Snowy Forest Landscape" being one of the museum's crown jewels you simply can't miss.Tianjin · 3.6km from downtown

A Day Trip to the Maritime Museum The Maritime Museum was a must-see on this trip to Tianjin. It's free, but reservations are required. If you can't get a reservation, you can buy a special exhibition ticket. There were several exhibitions, and I specifically chose the blue ocean one. I love aquariums, so I chose this one. The aquarium isn't very big, but it has fish, jellyfish, and soft-shelled animals. There's also a mermaid show on the hour. The exhibition hall is large and very unique. From chaos to order, from the deep sea to the stars. See ancient marine life frozen in rocks. See humanity's journey from the ocean to the stars.

The front desk staff were friendly, and check-in and check-out were very convenient. The room was cleaned very diligently; although I requested daily cleaning for my three-day stay, someone still came to tidy and clean the room every day. It's conveniently located near Citywalk attractions and the subway station.

From the Tianjin Eye, walk all the way to Tianjin Railway Station, and you can continue to Zhigu. Haihe River cruises are very popular, and you can also stroll along the banks. The riverside is lively in the evening, with numerous cruise ships on the river. The Ancient Culture Street, the Italian Style Area, and Jinwan Square offer stunning nighttime views, featuring many distinctive buildings that perfectly blend Tianjin's cosmopolitan charm with its relaxed atmosphere.

Strolling through Tianjin's Italian Style Town feels like stepping into a foreign town. Numerous Italian-style buildings are preserved here, with red tiles, green windows, and exquisite carvings, each exuding a rich artistic atmosphere. On both sides of the streets, ancient buildings and modern shops complement each other perfectly. Sunlight filters through the cobblestones, creating dappled patterns. Wandering through the alleys, admiring every detail, I felt as if I could hear the echoes of history. The town also boasts many unique shops selling handmade jewelry and Italian cuisine. I tasted authentic Italian pasta; the rich sauce and chewy noodles were unforgettable. What attracted me most was the ancient church, its Gothic spires reaching towards the sky, solemn and majestic. Inside, stained-glass windows cast dappled light and shadow, bringing a sense of tranquility. In this land brimming with exotic charm, I felt the fusion of cultures and the weight of time. Tianjin's Italian Style Town is truly a place I'll want to return to again and again.
