Trip Overview
Depart from Reykjavik to the Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel.
Arriving at Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel, this cave stretches approximately 1,340 meters in length. We will enter the interior through the narrow entrance, where extraordinary lava formations in diverse shapes and incredible colors will come into view. Natural stalactites and uniquely sculpted rock formations showcase nature's craftsmanship. The tunnel alternates between spacious flat areas and narrow winding passages, sometimes requiring crawling to proceed. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for walking on the rugged volcanic lava surface. Venturing deeper into the cave, you'll discover three tunnels in the rear section. Once-molten magma gathered here 5,000 years ago, forming this elongated cave while creating magnificent lava waterfalls, variously shaped lava rocks, and a colorful underground world.
Trip completed, returning to Reykjavik.
