Things to do in Antigua Guatemala

Antigua Central Park

Antigua Central Park is the heart of this ancient city, not only rich in history but also full of the warmth of daily life and the charm of local culture. Strolling into the park, visitors are surrounded by shade. These towering trees provide shelter for visitors and make the space feel quiet and elegant. The Siren Fountain (Fuente de las Sirenas) in the center of the park is intricately carved, and the sound of the fountain, combined with the surrounding stones and flower beds, offers an auditory and visual treat. The square is surrounded by many elegant buildings: the stone walls of San Jose Cathedral, the solemn exterior of the Palace of the Captains General (Palacio de los Capitanes Generales), the City Hall, and street-side cafes and shops. These buildings, along with the cobblestone paths, create a tourist destination that transcends history while remaining full of the vibrancy of daily life.

No. 1 of Night Attractions in Guatemala

Volcan Acatenango

Volcan Acatenango has an elevation of approx. 3,976 m and is the third-highest peak in Guatemala. It is a dormant volcano with no recorded eruptions since the 1970s. It faces the perpetually active Fuego Volcano across a valley and is located near the ancient city of Antigua, making the starting point for the climb relatively accessible. When visiting, it is common to start from the farmland at the foot of the mountain on the first day, passing through cloud forests and alpine vegetation zones, and camping at a high-altitude campsite at approx. 3,700 m on the mountainside in the evening. The campsite faces Fuego Volcano, and at night, you can often see the fire and smoke rising from the crater opposite; before dawn, you make the final push to the summit from the campsite to catch the sunrise. On clear days, you can overlook Volcan de Agua, the ancient city of Antigua, and even see the distant Pacific coast.

Arco de Santa Catalina

The Arco de Santa Catalina is a colorful historical landmark, its yellow arched walls framing the cobblestone streets of the old city. Built in the late 17th century, the arch allowed the nuns of the convent to pass between the inner courtyard and the school buildings without being seen by passersby. The arched bridge-like passageway resolved the separation between residence and function and unexpectedly became the visual landmark it is today. Above the arch, a bell tower stands quietly. Its clock face not only records the passage of time but also bears witness to the city's numerous earthquakes and reconstructions. On clear days, the peak of a volcano can be seen in the distance, reflected in the arch's curved view—making this spot a beloved postcard-worthy scene for photographers. Strolling beneath the arch, you can experience the magical blend of the tranquility of the former convent and the bustle of today's streets.
