It is one of the oldest surviving wooden structures from the Tang dynasty in China. The monastery faces south and covers an area of 3,078 m², with six existing halls including the great Buddha hall from the Tang dynasty.

Originally built during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty (471-499 AD). It was reconstructed in the 11th year of the Dazhong era of the Tang Dynasty (857 AD). Foguang Temple is situated at a location with three sides facing east, south, and north.
