Departing from the city center, we head directly to the Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings—the core area of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings are the most representative and largest cluster within Dazu, created over 70 years during the Southern Song Dynasty under the guidance of monk Zhao Zhifeng. Renowned for their grand narrative scenes, exquisite craftsmanship, and profound expression of Buddhist philosophy, the carvings form a continuous three-dimensional scroll along a 500-meter horseshoe-shaped mountain bay. Blending seamlessly with the natural landscape, they merge Buddhist teachings with life philosophy, offering deep artistic and educational value.
Key sculptures include the 31-meter-long Nirvana of Sakyamuni (Reclining Buddha), depicted only from the waist up to convey infinite depth; the splendid Thousand-Armed Guanyin with 830 arms fanning like a peacock's tail, representing the pinnacle of artistic skill; the Wheel of Rebirth, illustrating karma; and the Herding the Ox series, imbued with Zen philosophy and rustic charm. Baoding Mountain is not only a zenith of religious art but also a reflection of Song Dynasty social life and ideology—truly "an epic carved into the cliffs."
Afternoon: We proceed to the Beishan Rock Carvings to admire exquisitely crafted Guanyin statues from the late Tang to Song Dynasties, whose delicate style contrasts sharply with Baoding's grandeur.
The Beishan Rock Carvings, begun in the late Tang Dynasty and continued through the Five Dynasties and Song periods, are celebrated for refined artistry, diverse themes, and clear stylistic evolution. They emphasize individual statues' artistic expression, particularly in the "Guanyin Grottoes," hailed as the "Gallery of Chinese Guanyin Statues."
Breaking from traditional solemnity, Beishan Rock Carvings's Guanyin statues showcase elegance, grace, and humanity. For example, Cave No. 136, the Sutra Pillar Cave, features eight Bodhisattvas with delicate faces, elegant postures, and ornate attire, representing the peak of Song Dynasty rock carving. Cave No. 125, the Rosary-Holding Guanyin (often called the Charming Guanyin), captivates with a slender figure and gentle smile, radiating warmth.
