This elegant hotel opened in 1886. It has a long and interesting history. The lobby with Doric column is beautiful, and the small parlour has refreshments from the 1886 bakery. The bar on the mezzanine floor is a re-enactment of the rich cowboy era. They have live music every day at 6pm. The walls are decorated with ancient oil paintings from the West. Lyndon Johnson’s first date with his wife, Lady Bird, was here (for breakfast in the dining room) and here waiting for the election results of 1960 and 1964. You can enter Texas history here, and it’s still beautiful.

We loved this hotel and wanted to stay here every time we visited Austin. The location is great, you can walk anywhere, and it takes a short drive or 25 minutes to UT Austin. The pastries and coffee at the coffee shop downstairs were delicious and offered us the option to walk to the capital. The bar was a great place to end the day and watch people with cocktails.
