Shandong is a renowned agricultural province, and Liaocheng, known as the "Granary of Western Shandong," is not only rich in traditional crops but also home to specialty agricultural products like Guanxian Lingzhi and Guanxian pears. This in-depth tour of Liaocheng will help you unlock the unique charm of this treasure of a water city. Since ancient times, Lingzhi has been considered a rare, almost mythical herb. However, when you step into Guanxian County in Liaocheng, you will see rows upon rows of Lingzhi hanging in greenhouses or drying in the sun, making "Lingzhi freedom" an instant reality. Guanxian is truly the "Home of Lingzhi in China," with its core production area located in Dianzi Town. Local Lingzhi cultivation and processing techniques are recognized as provincial-level intangible cultural heritage in Shandong, and Guanxian Lingzhi is one of the famous "Three Treasures of Liaocheng," boasting a deep industrial heritage. Guanxian is not just about the mythical Lingzhi; it is also the "Home of the Chinese Pear," boasting the "Number One Pear Orchard in China," which spans over 10,000 mu. During the harvest season, the entire orchard is laden with fruit, with branches heavy with various fresh pears such as Ya pears, Qiuyue pears, and Golden pears. The fruit is plump, juicy, sweet, and refreshing—a quintessential autumn treat that you shouldn't miss, and it's perfect for packing up to share with friends and family. The most impressive sight in the orchard is the "Pear Tree King," which is over 400 years old. Despite the passage of time, it remains lush and fruitful, with an annual yield of over 4,000 jin, a testament to its remarkable vitality. After exploring the agricultural charm of Guanxian, you absolutely cannot miss Liaocheng's other trump card: Water Margin culture. For the second stop of this trip, we head into Yanggu County for an immersive encounter with the 900-year-old world of the Water Margin. The Lion Pavilion in the center of Yanggu County is the iconic landmark where Wu Song fought and killed Ximen Qing. As you stroll through the Song-style ancient street, be sure to listen to a performance of authentic Shandong clapper talk. The simple, resonant singing style vividly recounts the 900-year-old Water Margin stories, creating an incredibly immersive atmosphere. Shandong has a long-standing culture of alcohol, and a visit to Yanggu naturally calls for a taste of the famous Jingyanggang liquor. At the Jingyanggang Liquor Culture Tourism Scenic Area, the plaque inscribed with "Three Bowls and You Can't Cross the Ridge" by Mr. Ji Xianlin is striking and grand. Here, you can not only taste the mellow and authentic Jingyanggang liquor but also get an up-close look at the thousand-year history of brewing in Western Shandong and traditional brewing techniques, fully immersing yourself in the heritage of this time-honored liquor brand. The final stop of the journey is the Jingyanggang Tourism Area, located 16 kilometers from the county seat, which is the legendary site where Wu Song fought the tiger. The scenic area is full of wild charm, with quiet forests and secluded paths that restore the original appearance of the ancient mountain ridge. Watching the live performance at the "Three Bowls and You Can't Cross the Ridge" tavern is witty, vivid, and highly engaging. The scenic area features attractions such as the Jingyanggang stone tablet, the Mountain God Temple, the Wu Song Temple, and the Ancient Stele Forest, with every step revealing a new scene and showcasing the charm of the Water Margin world. Our two-day trip to Liaocheng has come to a close. From intangible cultural heritage agricultural products to thousand-year-old pear orchards, and from Water Margin historical sites to mellow liquor, this small city in Western Shandong is full of surprises. This trip was well worth it, and I look forward to visiting again to unlock even more of Liaocheng's local customs and culture.

With beautiful Lingzhi bonsai and endless rows of greenhouses, this is all part of the provincial-level intangible cultural heritage of Lingzhi cultivation and processing technology. I felt like I really learned a lot about wellness. 🍐 Second stop: [Guanzhou Pear Orchard]. This season is just right for the harvest. The orchard is full of pear trees, and the air is filled with the sweet scent of fruit. Shandong, I visit often. But Liaocheng, this really is my first time. Before I came, my impression of the city stopped at the four words "Jiangbei water city." But once you walk in, you realize—Liaocheng, you hide too well. 🔹 Climb Guangyue Tower, built entirely with wooden mortise-and-tenon joints, without a single nail or bolt, standing steadily for 650 years. From the railing, Dongchang Lake wraps around like a mirror, the old streets and alleys run through the city, and the full panorama of "a city in water, water in a city" unfolds before you, as if 600 years have paused. 🔹 Step into the Shanshan guildhall, a pinnacle of Qing dynasty architectural aesthetics. Symmetrical along the central axis with upturned eaves and corners, the wood, stone, and brick carvings display masterful craftsmanship; each courtyard is a scene, each carving has its own rhythm. 🔹 Visit the Daokoupu intangible cultural heritage museum, the Dongchang copper clock culture museum, and Gaoma Village heritage creative street to see woodblock New Year prints, Dongchang chengni, Dongchang antique brocade, and paper-cut gourd crafts—an immersive way to feel the deep charm of intangible cultural heritage. 🔹 Luzhuang, known as China's top gourd village, is filled with gourds of every size and shape—round and flat, plain and carved—like falling into a gourd kingdom. Dongchang gourd carving has more than 500 years of history and is a national-level intangible cultural heritage; each cut and carve brings figures vividly to life. 🔹 Guan County reishi mushrooms feature provincial-level cultivation and processing techniques recognized as intangible cultural heritage. At the nation's leading pear orchard, pick a sun-warmed Ya pear and hold the whole of autumn in your hand. 🔹 In Yanggu County, listen to a performance of Shandong kuaishu at Shizi Tower, visit Jingyanggang where Wu Song fought the tiger, and taste an aged brew at the Jingyanggang wine culture tourism area—the culture of Water Margin heroes is everywhere. 🔹 At Dongchang Lake restaurants, a table of lake specialties is tender and fresh. Touring the water city and eating lake seafood is how you truly taste Liaocheng. 🔹 When night falls, ride the Water City Eye ferris wheel to overlook the city's nightscape and take in the shimmering lights. By day you see history, by night you see romance. Liaocheng, this ancient city, tucks intangible heritage into its streets, brews stories into its wine, and hangs autumn on the branches of its pear orchards. My Liaocheng has treasures. And its greatest treasure is the calm, unhurried way it turns a thousand years into everyday life. Liaocheng is worth visiting. Take your time to uncover it.

🏯Liaocheng is great | The gentlest water city in the north, where the ancient city and lake are hidden gems First, the conclusion: The city is in the lake, and the lake is in the city—Liaocheng has brought the Water City of the North to life🌊 Dongchang Lake is even larger than West Lake, and the ancient city is surrounded by water, floating in the center of the lake. Standing atop Guangyue Tower, the entire ancient city spreads out beneath your feet like a chessboard. The key is that most attractions are free, prices are unbelievably low, and it's just right for a relaxing two-day weekend getaway. ✨First, let's talk about how amazing it is Dongchang Lake + Water Ancient City | The essence of the free water city The ancient city is surrounded by water on all four sides. Walking on the bluestone streets, you see flying eaves when you look up and the shimmering lake when you look down. Taking a walk around the lake in the evening is the most comfortable; the sunset sets the water ablaze in golden red, and locals are all out strolling by the lake. It's the ultimate relaxing vibe🌅 Guangyue Tower | A 600-year-old ancient city landmark An old building from the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty, it is one of the Top 10 Famous Towers in China. Looking down from the top, you get a panoramic view of the ancient city's central axis and Dongchang Lake. Emperor Qianlong also stood here to enjoy the scenery back in the day. The admission ticket is CNY 30, making it the number one must-visit spot in the ancient city🏯 Shan-Shaan Guild Hall | A sculpture museum by the canal It is the best-preserved ancient commercial guild hall along the Grand Canal, with wood, stone, and brick carvings that are incredibly detailed. China Canal Culture Museum | Learn about the thousand-year history of canal transport for free It uses a river to connect Liaocheng's past and present. Buying them individually isn't cheap, and it hurts if you don't buy a combined ticket in advance The promotion is really low-key; many people only realize Liaocheng is so fun after they arrive—it's a pity the vacation is already fully booked ✅Practical information (cheat sheet) Transportation: Take the high-speed train to Liaocheng West Station; it's a 10-minute taxi ride to the ancient city. City buses and shared bikes are also convenient Admission: Dongchang Lake, the ancient city district, and the Canal Museum are free; Guangyue Tower is CNY 30. Qiji Village is renowned for its well-preserved ancient canal street and wharf ruins. Centered on the ancient canal street, it features a layout of one core, one belt, two streets, and multiple nodes. Key historical sites include the ancient wharf, Zhai Family Ancestral Hall, Di Family Pharmacy, and the "One Stele Supporting Two Teahouses" teahouse. The Qiji Ancient Ferry site is the only wharf site on the Shandong section of the Grand Canal to have undergone scientific archaeological excavation. It is also the best-preserved canal wharf known to date, featuring remains such as seventeen stone steps and rammed earth platforms. The core area is dominated by Ming and Qing dynasty and modern buildings along Nanji Tai Street and Yihe Street, with architectural styles largely retaining their late Qing and early Republican era appearance. A sixth-batch Chinese traditional village.

The Shan-Shaan Guild Hall is located on South Street in Zhangqiu Town, about 70 meters east of the Ancient Grand Canal. It features a siheyuan (courtyard) layout and faces south. The guild hall is 32 meters long from north to south and 40 meters wide from east to west, covering a total area of approximately 1,280 square meters. The existing structures mainly include the mountain gate, theater stage, main hall, and side halls. The mountain gate consists of 3 bays and is connected to the theater stage behind it. A stone plaque is embedded above the gate, inscribed with the characters "Qiankun Zhengqi" (Righteousness of Heaven and Earth). The inscription is dated to the first month of autumn in the Guiyou year of the Kangxi reign (1693) and states that it was jointly built by merchants from Shandong and Shaanxi. The theater stage faces north and also consists of 3 bays. It is composed of a front stage and a back stage, with a height of 1.9 meters. A passageway underneath connects it to the mountain gate. The main hall (originally the Guandi Hall) consists of 3 bays, measuring 10.3 meters wide from east to west and 10.5 meters deep. The side halls are located on both sides of the main hall, each consisting of 3 bays. The entire complex is built with blue bricks and covered with gray tiles, featuring dougong (bracket sets) and xieshan-style (hip-and-gable) architecture. It is a Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit of Shandong Province.

The Poli Catholic Church was built under the direction of German missionary An Zhitae and Austrian missionary Fu Ruose starting in 1882. The main structure was completed in 1889, and all auxiliary facilities were finished in 1909. It covers a total area of 14,000 square meters, with over 200 rooms remaining today, and at its peak, it had 300 rooms. The church complex is a European Gothic brick-and-wood structure, facing south, and consists of 8 interconnected Western-style buildings. It includes functional buildings such as the cathedral, friary, convent, orphanage, and monastery, surrounded by a two-story circular building with interconnected basements. The complex contains 19 self-contained courtyards. The chapel features a tin-plated roof with exquisite craftsmanship, serving as a classic example of the fusion of Chinese and Western architecture. The Poli Catholic Church was the site of the 1928 Poli Uprising, the earliest peasant revolutionary uprising in Shandong Province led by the Communist Party of China. After capturing the church, the insurgent army established the Donglin Circuit Revolutionary Committee, opened granaries to distribute food, and expanded its ranks to over 500 people, sowing the seeds of revolution in the western Shandong region. Clear bullet holes from the battle remain visible to this day on the two black-painted tin-covered wooden doors of the church. The insurgent forces engaged in fierce combat and a standoff with reactionary military police and local militia for over 20 days. Ultimately outnumbered, they were forced to withdraw from the church on February 7 and were later disbanded after being jointly suppressed by warlords from Shandong and Zhili. Although the Poli Uprising failed, it dealt a heavy blow to the arrogance of the reactionary ruling class and imperialism, sowed the seeds of revolution in western Shandong and the province at large, and laid the foundation for the development and victory of future revolutionary struggles. It is a Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit of Shandong Province.

The Acheng Salt Transport Office is located in Haihuisi Village, Acheng Town, Yanggu County. It is the only remaining ancient salt industry management site along the Liaocheng Canal and was designated as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit by the State Council in May 2006. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Salt Transport Commissioners were often appointed in coastal areas and major salt-producing provinces. Their full title was "Salt Transport Commissioner of the Salt Transport Commission," often abbreviated as "Yunsi" (or "Yunshi" or "Duzhuan"). According to historical records, Acheng once had 13 salt gardens, an organization to manage salt transport, and salt patrols. The town also had dedicated stone roads for salt transport; if you dig more than two feet down on the old street of Acheng today, you will find stone, which is the old salt road. Sea salt was transported from the East China Sea and loaded onto boats in Acheng for shipment to the south, which is why Acheng earned the nickname "Silver Acheng." The Acheng Salt Transport Office was first built during the Ming Dynasty. During the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, it was expanded and renovated by Shanxi salt merchants in Acheng in collaboration with the Salt Transport Office. Locally, it is commonly known as the Shanxi Guild Hall or the South Guild Hall, serving as both a guild hall and an office for the Salt Transport Branch. Located to the west of Haihuisi Temple, the office consists of two courtyards and stands as a unique complex covering an area of 2,623 square meters. The existing structures include the mountain gate, front hall, back hall, and side halls. The main hall houses a statue of Guan Gong, while the east and west side halls house statues of Guan Ping and Zhou Chang. The architectural techniques of the Salt Transport Office are exquisite, with vivid carvings on the column bases of the main hall, delicate woodwork, and fluid, lively paintings, all reflecting the talent and wisdom of the skilled craftsmen of that time. As an important cultural relic building along the ancient canal, the Acheng Salt Transport Office holds significant historical and artistic value and serves as a testament to the economic prosperity of the Liaocheng Canal during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit.

Passing through Acheng Town, I stopped by Haihui Temple along the way. Unlike the bustling popular spots, this place offers a calm atmosphere rooted in its ancient architecture, perfect for a slow, relaxing stroll to clear your mind. Travel experience The weather was clear and sunny on the day of the visit, with strong sunlight in the open courtyards. Fortunately, there are many old trees inside, making the shaded areas noticeably cooler. Visitors were sparse, mostly local worshippers, with almost no tour groups, so there was no waiting to enter. Outside the mountain gate is a smooth asphalt road. Inside the temple, large bluestone slabs cover most of the ground. The stones have been polished over time and are smooth, with some small weeds growing in the cracks. Be cautious when walking on rainy days. The steps between halls are not high, and the courtyards are spacious. The parking lot outside the temple has plenty of spaces, making self-driving convenient. The overall atmosphere inside is quiet, and people naturally lower their voices. In summer, the lush greenery attracts more mosquitoes under the trees, so simple protection is recommended. The midday sun is harsh, so visiting in the morning or later in the afternoon is better. Photo tips and highlights No need to crowd in front of the stone lions at the mountain gate. You can stand to the side of the gate and use tree branches as a foreground to shoot the red walls and gate, creating a softer image. Don’t just capture the full view of the main hall. Look up at the eaves for the old painted decorations and corner details, which have a strong sense of history. Inside the courtyard, the old pine and cypress trees have thick trunks. Sunlight filters through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the stone slabs. Standing under a tree and framing the side hall creates a simple, appealing atmosphere. The moon gate’s round opening offers a great perspective. Looking through it toward another courtyard frames the red walls and gray tiles naturally, no need for posed shots. The incense burners and prayer ribbons scattered around the courtyard add to the authentic scene. Some side halls are very quiet with few people, perfect for closely observing the weathered bricks and stones of the old walls. Avoid shooting under direct midday light; photos look best when sunlight hits the walls at an angle. Do not use flash when visiting the halls. Practical itinerary tips Take your time to visit the main halls and side courtyards, stopping to appreciate the architectural details. The whole visit takes about 1–1.5 hours. A quick walk-through can be done in 40 minutes. The walking intensity is low. Most of the temple grounds are flat stone slabs with only a few low steps, so it’s easy for elderly visitors. The stones can be slippery, so wear flat, non-slip shoes. Easy route suggestion: After entering, follow the central axis to visit the Hall of Heavenly Kings and the main hall, then explore the side courtyards. Take a quick look around the bell and drum towers. If you’re tired, you don’t need to cover every corner; you can turn back anytime. Tickets are required for entry. Admission is free on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month. Incense and candles are voluntary donations. There are no shops selling snacks or drinks inside, so bring your own water. Please keep quiet and avoid stepping on thresholds while visiting. This place has no flashy attractions. It is a preserved Qing Dynasty temple complex. Located next to the old canal site, it lacks commercial noise and is ideal for quietly experiencing the atmosphere of an ancient temple. When you travel, would you be willing to take a detour to visit a remote old temple like this, away from the city?

When in Yanggu, head to Jinshui Lake after dinner for a stroll. It's an open-access lakeside park used by locals for daily leisure. It lacks heavy tourist commercialization, making for a relaxed and comfortable visit. Travel experience It was muggy during the day when I visited, but it felt much cooler in the evening. Most visitors are local residents out for a walk, strolling with kids, or for a night run. It gets busier on holidays, but it's not crowded on weekdays, and you won't need to wait in line. The path around the lake is primarily paved or stone. Some sections are slightly damaged, so watch your step. The waterfront platforms feature wooden boardwalks; be mindful of the gaps between the planks. There are many willow trees and shrubs by the lake, providing plenty of shade, but there are quite a few mosquitoes near the water, so it's recommended to bring mosquito repellent. There is a breeze on the lake, and standing on the shore in the evening is cooler than being on the street. There is a free parking area outside the park, making it convenient if you are driving. The open-air areas have limited shade, so staying for long periods at noon is not recommended. The experience is better at dusk or at night. Photo highlights There's no need to crowd in front of the bridge for a panoramic shot. Walk to the path on the side of the bridge and use the willow branches on the shore as a foreground. Shooting the arch bridge and its reflection through the leaves makes for a softer, more natural image. There are many covered walkways and leisure pavilions by the lake. Don't just photograph the exteriors; sit under a walkway and look out toward the lake, framing the sparkling water through the pillars. This perspective is very appealing. There are many stone carvings and cultural signs scattered along the lakeside path. You don't need to go out of your way to find large sculptures; look down and examine the text carved into the stone slabs to appreciate the local details. At dusk, the sunset spreads across the water, casting a soft glow over the lake. Wait until night falls for the bridge lights to turn on. The lights reflecting in the water and the swaying light and shadows create a more atmospheric shot than just photographing the architecture itself. Be sure to prioritize safety when taking photos near the water, and do not climb over the protective railings. Practical itinerary A leisurely half-lap around the lake, including a break in a pavilion, watching the sunset, and waiting for the lights to come on, takes about 2 hours in total. If you just want a simple walk by the lake, 40 minutes to 1 hour is enough. The walking intensity is moderate. The paths are mostly flat with almost no steep slopes, making it suitable for seniors. The full loop around the lake is quite long, so it's not recommended to force yourself to walk the entire way. Easy route suggestion: Enter from a nearby entrance, walk slowly along the lakeside path, and stop to enjoy the view at the arch bridge and covered walkways. Turn back the way you came when you've had enough, without feeling pressured to complete the entire loop. The park is free to enter, and boat rides are optional paid activities. There are few vendors in the park, so it's recommended to bring your own drinking water. When visiting at night, try to stick to the main paths with adequate lighting. There are no lively amusement rides here, but the park excels with its open lake views, and the dusk and night scenery are stunning. It's a place for locals to unwind after a meal, and passing travelers can also stop by to enjoy the lake breeze and relax for a while. If you were traveling to this county, would you be willing to find a city lakeside spot like this to spend your evening?

Shuipo Liangshan is located in Jining, Shandong. If you want to witness a thousand years of human history and billions of years of natural change, this place is a perfect example. In ancient times, this vast marshland was on the edge of the old Yellow River. After multiple course changes and sediment deposits, the once vast 800-li expanse of misty waves has mostly disappeared, leaving only scattered hills and waters, a vivid testament to the passage of time and nature’s transformation. Stepping into Liangshan is like diving straight into the world of Water Margin. The mighty Black Wind Pass and the grand Loyalty Hall stand clearly before you, while famous sites like Qingfeng Fort and Jingyang Ridge unfold one after another; climbing high and looking far, the distant mountains and plains stretch out in full view, instantly opening your mind and refreshing your spirit. The scenic area regularly stages live Water Margin performances that you can watch, enjoy, and even participate in immersively. The natural scenery and thousand-year cultural heritage blend and complement each other perfectly. Pause to carefully read Fan Zeng’s cliff inscription of Shuipo Liangshan, then admire the expressive landscape paintings that capture the heroic spirit of the outlaws. The strong sense of martial valor and loyalty fills the air—this visit is truly worthwhile.
