It took us 6 hours drive from roturua to Wellington on a Christmas evening.
Lots of places will be closed on Christmas day, we had our buffet dinner in the hotel instead

Wellington Botanic Garden, Wellington Cable Car (skip the cable car if not too enthusiastic just to ride on it), Cable Car Museum (9.30am-5pm - Free)
Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (10am - 6pm) - It's Free!

Had breakfast at the Chocolate Fish Café, Drive along Massey Rd - Massey Memorial, Point Halswell Lighthouse (before getting to the lord of the rings tour) -
