#Rock-Hewn Churches, Lalibela Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
You will be awestruck! Unbelievable!
Laibela is a national world heritage site located just outside of Amhara Ethiopia. Now, understand that I have been around the world six times and have visited over 100 countries…… but, I cannot remember when I have ever been so moved and rocked to the core like I was when I visited these incredible churches….. If there were ever a bucket list place to visit this would be it completely.
According to UNESCO; “The churches were not constructed in a traditional way but rather were hewn from the living rock of monolithic blocks. These blocks were further chiselled out, forming doors, windows, columns, various floors, roofs etc. This gigantic work was further completed with an extensive system of drainage ditches, trenches and ceremonial passages, some with openings to hermit caves and catacombs”
The few pictures that I posted cannot even do this place justice as you must visit for yourself.

European Lalibela
In the Rasta Mountains of Ethiopia, there is a small town named after Lalibela. Lalibela uses 5,000 workers and it takes 30 years to cut. 11 rock churches.
These churches are also known as African Miracles.
The most famous of these is the church with the cross on the roof. It is located in a deep pit, and looks like a sacred and solemn sacred seal on the vast land, every person who sees the church. I can't help but be silent for a moment before the cross. It is the infective power of faith, and it is also the amazement from the building itself. When I touch the wall of vicissitudes of life, I stare at the face of piety, and the mummy that is buried in the wall hole. At the same time, I feel the real feeling of the small things between the heavens and the earth.
This is known as the new city of Jerusalem. There are countless devout Christians pilgrimage here. They are bowed in white Shah, which makes me think of Jerusalem, Israel, remembering Vanara, India. West, although the belief is not the same, but the scene is very shocking.
[Candles] Lalibela, inciting the soul, inciting ugliness and evil about human nature, or reading about poverty and wealth.
If you travel to Ethiopia, be sure to come to this holy place.
tips: The church is allowed to take pictures, and the video will cost 300 local coins.

Quietly moving between the rocks of the church of Lalibela, it seems to have entered a long river of history that has been flowing constantly. The splendid culture and prosperity of thousands of years have been piled up by the rocks of the wisdom of the ancient people. The group witnessed the unique creativity of the unique shape, the flat lines, the exquisite carvings, and the sturdiness that remained unmoving after thousands of years, all of which talked about the intelligence of people at that time. Can not help but wonder, before the extremely low level of mechanization, thousands of years, people in the end how to hammer into this natural and humanistic fusion of wonders, curiosity and admire can not help but sigh, "African miracle" really worthy of the name.
At the Lalibela Church, patrols in white robes are everywhere. They either prayed on the thin carpet or prayed carefully, or they touched the doctrine of the righteousness, or touched the wall with their heads. It seemed that at that moment, God was with them through their foreheads.
However, every believer who is seriously praying here has a little bit of light in their eyes, perhaps at an unknown moment, they have indeed seen God, and Always firmly believe in his existence.

In the church of Lalibela, patrols in white robes can be seen everywhere. They either prayed on the thin carpet or prayed carefully, or they touched the doctrine of the righteousness, or touched the wall with their heads. It seemed that at that moment, God was with them through their foreheads.
No one can deny the beliefs of another, and no one can judge the good or bad of one's beliefs. However, what I have seen is that every believer who is seriously praying here has a little bit of light in their eyes. Perhaps at an unknown moment, they have indeed seen God, and Always firmly believe in his existence.
The believers face the solemn cross and silently chanting, telling the old church devoutly, or carefully lighting a candle, adding a lot of humanity to the church.
The church is filled with a solemn and sacred atmosphere. Quietly walking through it, as if walking into a long river of history, these believers prayed piously, quietly telling them, and being with them, listening carefully, can not help but feel very moving.

The absolute highlight of any visit to Ethiopia is the 12th century rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. Inspired by his visit to Jerusalem King Lalibela wanted to create a New Jerusalem in Ethiopia. How they managed to carve these beautiful churches out of the rock, how big the workforce was and how long they have been working on it is not known. The result is magnificent and goes beyond imagination. What it makes more special, even magical, is that the churches are operating like time never passed. Needless to say Lalibela is listed as a World Heritage Site.

Unlike other high cathedrals in the world that need to be looked up, Lalibela's churches are carved from the rocks of the mountains themselves.
Try to imagine again: pick an area on the ground as the roof of the church, then dig down the perimeter, cut a straight wall, and engrave the windows and decorations on the wall, the more you dig Deep into the steps of the church, and then hollowed out the interior, it became a church. The church itself is underground.
Laribella stayed up for three days, in a dream, God directed him to a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and got the god: "Build a new Jerusalem city in Ethiopia and ask for a whole piece of rock church". So Laribela woke up and spent ten years on the rocky plateau of more than 2,000 meters above sea level in northern Ethiopia. He built eleven rock churches, which were later called Lalibela. . Since then, Lalibela has become a holy place for Ethiopians.
La Ribeira's eleven rock churches are roughly divided into three groups, which are connected to each other by tunnels and corridors. Each church covers an area of tens to hundreds of square meters, which is equivalent to the height of three or four floors. Because the church was completely built in the rock of the mountain, the project was extremely difficult.
