A guide to the culturally rich ancient city of Quanzhou, where historic sites and attractions are concentrated
The ancient city of Quanzhou is not large, and it is home to historic sites such as Kaiyuan Temple, Confucius Temple, Guanyue Temple, and Qingjing Mosque. It is recommended to go to Guanyue Temple first, walk northwest along Tumen Street, and you can visit Qingjing Mosque and Confucius Temple not far away. Pass through the Confucius Temple, walk north along Zhongshan Road, to the crossroad of West Street, walk west from the intersection, and you can reach Kaiyuan Temple not far away. Qingyuan Mountain is also worth climbing, but it's a bit far, you can take a taxi to Laojun Rock.
The above-mentioned ancient sites in the ancient city can be finished in half a day; Qingyuan Mountain is very large, with a full-length hiking trail, clear signs on the mountain, you can arrange it yourself according to time and physical strength.
Impression: More than 700 years ago, Quanzhou was a world trade center, concentrating various major religious cultures at that time.
1. Guanyue Temple is very popular;
2. Qingjing Mosque is a very old mosque;
3. Some Nestorian sites can be seen, Nestorianism is a branch of Christianity;
4. Zhongshan Road is a commercial street, not wide, with arcades on both sides, convenient for pedestrians;
5. The stone carvings of the Heavenly Kings on the tower of Kaiyuan Temple are very exquisite;
6. The huge statue of Laozi at the entrance of Qingyuan Mountain, carved from natural stone mountain, the deep eyes see through time and space;
7. The view from the top of Qingyuan Mountain is good, there are many cliff carvings, and there is a pagoda of the high monk Hongyi on the mountain.
Fujian's largest Buddhist temple, home to China's tallest twin stone towers, is located in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, at Kaiyuan Temple
✅【Life】
"In this small town where I live, everyone firmly believes that there are gods three feet above their heads, and they also believe in spirits. People live closely with ghosts and gods..." This is how writer Cai Chongda describes the attitude of Quanzhou people towards gods in his book 'Skin'.
🚩【Folklore】
In the daily life of Quanzhou people, the folklore of "respecting heaven and earth and fearing ghosts and gods" is vividly preserved. Here, there is a temple every five steps and a temple every ten steps. It is a "city of all gods" that integrates various beliefs such as Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, Manichaeism, and Hinduism.
📍【Check-in】
Kaiyuan Temple, located on West Street in Licheng District, Quanzhou, can be said to be one of the most representative places of Quanzhou's earthly and immortal atmosphere. Many people even list visiting Kaiyuan Temple as a must-do when traveling to Quanzhou.
📖【History】
It was first built in the second year of the Tang Dynasty, and has a history of more than 1300 years. It is the largest Buddhist temple in Fujian and a national key cultural relics protection unit. As a major part of "Quanzhou: The World Maritime Trade Center of Song and Yuan China", it has been included in the "World Cultural Heritage List".
➡️【What you see】
The Kaiyuan Temple we see now, its main temples were mostly built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was originally called "Lotus Temple" because of the allusion of "Mulberry Opening White Lotus". Later, Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty ordered the construction of temples throughout the country to show the grandeur of the Tang Dynasty, and they were all named after the year, hence the name "Kaiyuan Temple".
📍【Scale】
The temple covers nearly 120 acres and consists of a series of buildings such as the main building group in the middle road and the east and west stone towers. Not only is it high in regulation, majestic, and cleverly constructed, but it is also more splendid and brightly lit when you look closely.
Especially the Zhenguo Tower and Renshou Tower, which are arranged in a "品" shape with the Daxiong Hall, not only stand tall for thousands of years, but are also the highest pair of stone towers in our country. Their meticulous and precise stacking methods and the exquisite relief carvings on the tower body are all shocking and are undoubtedly national treasures.
🚩【Achievements】
In addition, there are wooden couplets personally written by Zhu Xi, the Ganlu Jietan, which is known as one of the three major Jietan in China along with Beijing Jietai Temple and Hangzhou Zhaoqing Temple, and the Sutra Pavilion with a rich collection of historical materials, etc., are all must-see check-in points at Kaiyuan Temple.
Of course, in addition to the magnificent and exquisite architecture and the long and diverse culture of Kaiyuan Temple, its classical, elegant, quiet and deep environmental atmosphere is also a reason why many people prefer it.

Quanzhou for architecture & culture lovers !
Vibrant city to enjoy for at least 2 days for culture, architecture and food.
Few worth it half-day trips around doable by didi.
Active by day and night !
Visit the temple of the Queen of heaven in the morning then hang out around and through its southern streets during market time. Go back after sunset for a busy and messy atmosphere.
Go to Kaiyuan temple in the afternoon and hang out on Xi jie, have tea and watch the sunset from one of the rooftop. Favorite one Baishui Haoxi, a nice-edgy renovated Republic of China building (around 1930).
Get lost in the small streets and you will see small family temples built at every other corner.
Other great temples, Confucian temple, Chengtian temple, Tonghuai temple, to see both by day and pass by by night.
Stay at the Dongmian inn nearby the Chengtian temple, great host and ideal location.
A half-day trip to Xunpucun is easy by didi, this village has old houses with walls built out of oysters shell, unique.
Good destination for seafood and fish. A must try is also the ginger duck, a stewed duck long-cooked in iron pot with tones of ginger.

World Cultural Heritage, the millennium-old famous temple—Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple
✔️ Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple, located in West Street of Licheng District, is the largest Buddhist temple in Fujian Province. It was founded in the second year of the Tang Dynasty's Chuigong era (686 AD), and has a history of more than 1300 years.
✔️ Kaiyuan Temple is one of the few existing temples in China that maintains the Tantric regulations of the Tang Dynasty. The temple's setup, layout, Buddha statue arrangement, and various decorations all reflect the connotations of the Tantric culture of the Tang Dynasty. The architectural pattern is unique, the types of buildings are diverse, and the craftsmanship is exquisite, making it a collection of ancient Chinese architectural art.
✔️ The most eye-catching features within the temple are the two towers in the east and west, which have become the symbols of Quanzhou. The twin towers of Kaiyuan Temple are the tallest existing stone towers of the Song Dynasty in China and symbolize the prosperity of Quanzhou's overseas traffic during the medieval period.
✔️ The Mahavira Hall, located at position C on the central axis, also known as the Purple Cloud Hall, is said to have been named because when Kaiyuan Temple was founded, 'there was the auspicious sign of purple clouds covering the ground.' Therefore, not only is the main hall named Purple Cloud, but the plaque outside the mountain gate is also 'Purple Cloud.' The hall has a double-eaved Xieshan-style roof, and although it has been rebuilt many times, it still retains the simplicity of Tang and Song Dynasty architecture, making it the oldest and largest wooden structure in Southern Fujian.

Quanzhou Ancient City Walk, the third stop, Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple!
Kaiyuan Temple is located on West Street in Licheng District, Quanzhou City. It was built in the second year of the Chuigong era during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty, and has a history of more than 1300 years. Originally named Lotus Dojo, it was renamed Kaiyuan Temple in the 26th year of the Kaiyuan era. It is an important cultural relic along the southeast coast of China and also one of the largest Buddhist temples in Fujian Province.
Kaiyuan Temple faces south with its back to the north. The central axis courtyard includes the mountain gate, worship courtyard, east and west corridors, Mahavira Hall, Sweet Dew Precept Platform, and Sutra Repository, among others.
The Heavenly King Hall serves as the mountain gate of Kaiyuan Temple. Crossing the mountain gate, one arrives at the worship courtyard, where the towering east and west pagodas and the spacious and bright east and west corridors are symmetrically arranged on both sides. The east and west pagodas are famous attractions of Kaiyuan Temple.
The east is the 'Zhen Guo Pagoda,' built between the second year of the Jiaxi era and the tenth year of the Chunyou era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1238-1250). It is an octagonal five-story stone pagoda in the style of a wooden pavilion, with a total height of 48.27 meters. The outer walls of the pagoda are decorated with stone statues arranged according to the five levels of Buddhism, from bottom to top: heavenly generals, arhats, high monks, bodhisattvas, and Buddhas, totaling 80 statues, representing the five realms of Buddhist practice. The base of the pagoda is carved with 37 panels of Buddhist stories, promoting the Dharma.
The west is the 'Ren Shou Pagoda,' built during the Shaoding and Duanping eras of the Southern Song Dynasty (1228-1236). It is also an octagonal five-story stone pagoda in the style of a wooden pavilion, with a total height of 45.06 meters. The outer walls of each layer are alternately carved with figures from the various vehicles of Buddhism, totaling 80 statues, representing the Buddhist concept of the equality of all sentient beings' Buddha-nature. The base of the pagoda is carved with 40 panels of flowers, birds, and animals, harmonizing with this beautiful world.
The east and west pagodas of Kaiyuan Temple are the tallest pair of stone pagodas from the Song Dynasty still existing in China, representing the highest level of stone construction skills in China in the 13th century.
The main building is the Mahavira Hall. Rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty, it is known as the 'Hall of a Hundred Pillars.' The hall was originally planned to have one hundred pillars, but later, to accommodate Buddha statues and make space for Buddhist worship, the beams were lengthened and the number of pillars was reduced, resulting in the 'Hall of a Hundred Pillars' with 86 pillars.
When I went there, it was the first day of the Lunar New Year, and many pilgrims were burning incense and praying for blessings. There were so many people. When in Rome, do as the Romans do, so I also experienced the New Year atmosphere of the people of Quanzhou!
After leaving Kaiyuan Temple, I strolled and ate along West Street, tasting the local specialties of Quanzhou, such as ginger duck, noodle paste, frozen siphon, soft rice cake, vinegar meat, and Shihuagao... I just marveled at how many delicious things there are 😍😍😍!

The place was anciently known as the Buddha's Land, where saints roam the streets," says the Quanzhou calling card: Kaiyuan Temple
Kaiyuan Temple is located on West Street in Licheng District, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province. It is an important cultural relic along the southeast coast of China and the largest Buddhist temple in Fujian Province. The temple was originally founded in the second year of the Chuigong era of the Tang Dynasty (686 AD), initially named Lotus Dojo. It was renamed Kaiyuan Temple in the twenty-sixth year of the Kaiyuan era (738 AD) and was the largest and most officially prominent Buddhist temple in Quanzhou during the Song and Yuan dynasties. The existing main temple buildings were constructed during the Ming and Qing dynasties, with a length of 260 meters from north to south and a width of 300 meters from east to west, covering an area of 78,000 square meters.
Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple's Zhen Guo Pagoda is renowned for its stone carvings of figures, which are considered first-class
If the West Pagoda of Kaiyuan Temple, the Ren Shou Pagoda, represents the egalitarian paradise of the Pure Land, then the East Pagoda, Zhen Guo Pagoda, represents the hierarchical world of the Eastern Saha world. Look at the name of the East Pagoda, 'Zhen Guo,' which signifies the foundation of the nation; all sorts of orders, such as the Three Bonds and the Five Constants, must be adhered to. Especially the dozens of stories from the Buddhist scriptures on the Sumeru base are particularly vivid. The East Pagoda is three meters taller than the West Pagoda, and in terms of visibility, it is also much higher.
🧑🏻💻About Zhen Guo Pagoda
The wooden pagoda from the Tang Dynasty was changed to a stone pagoda in the Song Dynasty, and it seems to have a higher status than Ren Shou Pagoda.
🏯Characters on the five-story pagoda
✅F1 Heavenly Realm: Devas, Nāgas, Yakṣas, Asuras, and Vajra warriors, etc.
✅F2 Sravaka Realm: People who have heard the Buddha's teachings
✅F3 Pratyekabuddha Realm: Those with insight and great wisdom
✅F4 Bodhisattva Realm: Bodhisattvas who can enlighten themselves and others
✅F5 Buddha Realm: The highest state

We tried the local delicacies recommended by friends from Quanzhou, which were super satisfying, very affordable, and delicious! (I feel like I've become half a Quanzhou local, special thanks to General Hong and General Wei for their strong support) The area centered around the Kaiyuan Temple/Clock Tower in Quanzhou was our main playground. We traveled off-peak, so it wasn't too crowded. Whether visiting attractions or eating, we didn't have to wait long, and the experience was very good. Personally, I felt that the most crowded places were near the Wen Temple and Guan Yue Temple, where it was a bit congested, but not chaotic. I can't help but exclaim: "Lord Guan, your popularity is truly booming!"
Quanzhou offers the option to ride small orange electric bikes, which makes getting around very convenient, except for being a bit pricey. Additionally, some streets are blocked off to motor vehicles, so you can opt for the small white buses that really do stop on a wave, very convenient, and the big buses are surprisingly cheap, only 1 yuan per ride.
We stayed in Quanzhou for two days, and the weather was unpredictable, but it didn't affect our travel, and it was still acceptable. We didn't visit Guipu Zan Hua, but those interested really should try it out; it would probably be very photogenic if the weather is good, haha. It's worth mentioning that we also checked in at many interesting niche photo spots. Seeing Quanzhou from different angles is truly beautiful.
Quanzhou Guide | How exactly should one play in the ancient city?
| How exactly should one play in the ancient city? If you can only play for one day in Quanzhou, it has to be the Quanzhou ancient city, but how should you play, and which places are really good, listen to me carefully
Selection of attractions in the ancient city
There are many large and small attractions in the ancient city, enough to visit for three days and nights. The must-visit ones I have picked out are:
Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple
Even if you really don't like the noise of West Street, Kaiyuan Temple is a must-visit
The East and West Pagodas are really distinctive, linking history and religion very well. At the same time, a small stele, even a single word, has a significant background. I hope everyone comes not just for the scenery, but to do their homework, find a guide, or listen to the podcast I will recommend below
Chengtian Zen Temple
I like this place more than Kaiyuan Temple. There are relatively fewer people here, and it's very comfortable to stroll around. The landscape is quite rich and not boring. Every painting and every character is worth savoring
Guan Yue Temple
If you talk about the most popular place for incense, it must be here, with people coming from day to night. It is said to be particularly effective for career fortune, and even someone like me who never asks for divination can't help but follow the custom. The process of asking for divination is a learning process, and the architecture is also stunning. If you have time, you can come once during the day and once at night for different shocks
Qingjing Temple
The only attraction that charges an entrance fee. It is the oldest existing Islamic mosque. The dome inscription architecture is very distinctive. The style is like a small fresh spot in the ancient city.
Alleys of the ancient city
More numerous than the buildings are the alleys of the ancient city. In summary, the most characteristic and enjoyable alley is Goldfish Alley, the tastiest road is Zhongshan Middle Road, the most historically rich are Ancient Banyan Alley and Jia Di Alley, and to feel the local life, go to the latter half of West Street
A tour suggestion
Highly recommend a podcast by Quanzhou Old Li's 'Coming and Going in Quanzhou'. Although it is paid, it is definitely worth more than its price. Because Quanzhou is indeed a place that needs to be experienced slowly with a calm heart. Without understanding the culture and history, it can only be a cursory visit. This podcast is different from the past, as it will take you around, observing bit by bit, but it is also relatively time-consuming.
I recommend everyone listen to two parts,
One is the classic historical buildings, such as who is on each floor of the Kaiyuan Temple East and West Pagodas, their ranking, the source and meaning of the size of the buildings, all will be talked about, and even how to worship at the Guandi Temple will teach you!
Two is the small alleys of the ancient city. Following him walking in the ancient city, ancient wells, stone tablets, paintings on the doors, carvings on the walls, old buildings, and even who lived inside will all be more clearly understood.
Please, is this really a unique case in the whole country? The Twin Towers of Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple
Please, is this really a unique case in the whole country? The Twin Towers of Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple.
Ever since the successful application for World Heritage status, I have been longing to visit.
This place was once known as the Land of Buddha, where saints filled the streets, people lived alongside deities, and ancient houses coexisted with Western-style buildings.
Yes, this is Quanzhou, the City of Carp.
Bai Yansong also mentioned that Quanzhou is a city that one must visit at least once in their lifetime. The culture of Southern Fujian is rich, filled with the atmosphere of human life, hence this three-day, two-night travel guide.

The attractions are mostly concentrated in the old city, which can be solved by walking.
And there are basically buses, and for sightseeing cars, it's 2 yuan/person.
Wave to stop, and the city attractions are basically covered~

Quanzhou · Kaiyuan Temple - "A Thousand-Year-Old Ancient Monastery"
Entering Quanzhou, one must not miss Kaiyuan Temple! This ancient monastery, with a history of over 1200 years, has witnessed the glory of the Maritime Silk Road in Quanzhou. Inside the Mahavira Hall, the three giant statues of Sakyamuni Buddha stand solemn and majestic, as if telling stories of a millennium.
The architectural style of Kaiyuan Temple is unique, with the charm of the Tang Dynasty coming towards you. Here, every step is imbued with the profound Buddhist culture. But remember, respect the temple etiquette, speak softly, and do not take photos at will.
It is recommended to visit in the early morning or evening to avoid the peak of the crowd, to welcome the first ray of sunlight or to bid farewell to the last streak of sunset with Kaiyuan Temple. Come to Kaiyuan Temple in Quanzhou, feel the weight of history, and let your soul embark on a tranquil journey.
Opening hours: 06:30~17:00
Free admission, located inside West Street, parking nearby is inconvenient, you can take the bus to nearby and then walk.
Quanzhou, Fujian
Quanzhou is located in the southeastern corner of Fujian Province, relatively close to Xiamen City. Quanzhou has a long history, with economic development beginning as early as the Zhou and Qin dynasties.
The area is home to a number of ethnic minorities, with the Hui, Tujia, Miao, and She nationalities being the most populous. The local dialect is mainly Southern Min. In ancient times, Quanzhou was the starting city of the 'Maritime Silk Road' and has the permanent right to host the International Festival of the Silk Road on the Sea. It is one of the first batch of national historical and cultural cities, the first East Asia City of Culture, and a World Heritage City, among other titles.
The Renshou Pagoda of Kaiyuan Temple in Quanzhou features a Ming Dynasty Sun Wukong on a Song Dynasty tower
The Renshou Pagoda at Kaiyuan Temple in Quanzhou is quite interesting. On the dragon gate on the fourth floor, there is a relief of Sun Wukong. It's amusing to find the protagonist of the Ming Dynasty's 'Journey to the West' on a stone tower from the Song Dynasty. If I hadn't known since childhood that Sun Wukong wields a golden cudgel, I might have mistaken the object in his hand in the relief for a broadsword...
🏯 About Renshou Pagoda
The western pagoda of Kaiyuan Temple was originally a wooden tower during the Five Dynasties period, and was rebuilt into a stone tower during the Southern Song Dynasty. It has weathered many years and is a five-story octagonal pavilion-style stone pagoda.
📸 Highlights
✅ Sumeru Base: Various mythical creatures, flowers and plants + strongmen supporting the tower
✅ Human reliefs: Found on every level of the pagoda, with bodhisattvas, monks, arhats, vajras, and of course, Tang Sanzang and the eldest disciple...
✅ The 'heart' character stone: The dot of the 'heart' character is at the bottom, located right beside the pagoda
The main theme of Renshou Pagoda at Kaiyuan Temple is the equality of all beings. The pagoda's body features reliefs of all kinds of figures without any concept of hierarchy or status. Otherwise, how could there be a monkey among them? Back in the Song Dynasty, he wasn't yet the Great Sage Equal to Heaven...
Traveling in Quanzhou, burning incense and cutting candles under the twin towers, the glazed bricks are carved with Tang Dynasty style, and the ancient temple is bustling with worshippers
🛕 Next stop is the bustling West Street, filled with the scent of life, but before entering West Street, one must first visit this landmark ancient temple of Quanzhou: Kaiyuan Temple. This is the largest temple in Fujian Province, carrying a lot of heritage and memories.
—————————
Name: Kaiyuan Temple
Address: No. 176 West Street, Licheng District, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province
Admission: Free
Opening hours: 06:30-18:00
—————————
🛕 Following the crowd, we entered this well-preserved ancient temple with a simple and natural atmosphere, and suddenly the mood became very different from the outside West Street. As you stroll around, you will discover its uniquely beautiful atmosphere.
🌟 Bustling Popularity
Upon entering Kaiyuan Temple, one will be shocked by the bustling popularity here, with pilgrims and tourists crisscrossing, filling the main area to the brim. Some people rush through to admire the sights, some worship and burn incense with devotion, and some dance lightly in flowing skirts for photos. While feeling the popularity, one naturally gains a sense of respect.
🌟 Majestic Grandeur
This ancient temple, which was founded in the Tang Dynasty, retains the simplicity and grandeur of the Tang and Song styles. The area is much larger than imagined. The eastern and western towers stand solemnly among them. Stone pillars, ordination platforms, worship courtyards, and treasure halls are decorated with solemn and grand carvings, adding a mysterious color to this ancient temple.
🌟 Quiet Stroll
Wandering around, as you reach the side halls and backyards, the crowd gradually thins. Suddenly the world becomes quiet, with hands on wooden railings and feet on stone steps, serene and elongated. It seems to form a strong contrast with the noisy details outside, quietly observing the architecture, houses, and carved inscriptions, leaving footprints in the casual corners, even feeling at ease.
🛕 When you come to Kaiyuan Temple, you should be able to feel the devotion and expectation for a beautiful life in Quanzhou, a city where half of it is temples, and experience a different atmosphere as you walk through it.
Welcome to the Office of the Gods in Quanzhou
Bring your family to Quanzhou for the New Year, and here's a guide for first-timers on where to eat, play, and take photos.
🏨 Accommodation: Stayed in Sanchao Alley near West Street, a 10-minute walk to West Street
🌸 Xuangpu Village Hairpin Flowers: Hairpin flowers cost 40+ for a set of clothes, with a 200 deposit. Sisters who can do their own makeup and don't chase after internet-famous looks can do it themselves; it's fine to take your own photos when traveling with girlfriends. You can also hire a photographer; they know the spots that make for good photos. If it's not the peak season, you can book a photographer with a portfolio in advance. If you can edit photos, you don't need to ask for retouching (because you'll have to wait, just use Meitu Xiu Xiu to edit yourself)
🤡 Puppet Show: A cultural heritage worth experiencing with children. Couldn't get tickets for the New Year, bought overpriced tickets for the 5th row at the seafood market, recommend buying within the first 8 rows for a clear view. The performance was amazing, it changed my perception of puppet shows, and you can take photos with the puppets at the end.
📷 Popular photo spots on West Street: 1️⃣ Carp Sky Terrace Café (consumption required, 20 per person for rooftop photos without consumption, one adult drink can bring one child), go early for photos without queuing, this place has the best view of the Kaiyuan Temple Twin Towers. 2️⃣ Berry Super Crazy Advantages: This rooftop is free, and the drinks are delicious. Disadvantages: Really crowded, first time seeing a rooftop photo spot that requires queuing. 3️⃣ Quanzhou Characters: Navigate to the 85°C West Street store, don't walk past it, just turn left to see the two characters for Quanzhou. The bell tower is just ahead.
🍽️ Food: 1️⃣ Berry Super Crazy: Trustworthy drinks (Oriental Gardenia White is delicious) 2️⃣ Kun Ji Taro Cake·Stone Flower Cake: My goodness, never thought taro cake could be so delicious, crispy on the outside and silky inside. (Order takeout) 3️⃣ Spring Brother Teppanyaki: Heard I must try the ginkgo nuts!!! Crispy, fragrant, chewy, sweet and salty, ah! The barbecue is also delicious! 4️⃣ Xie Ji Four Fruit Ice: The four-fruit soup is delicious no matter which store, but the key is that their fried chicken legs and chicken racks are even tastier than those at barbecue shops. 5️⃣ Dongxing Beef: The food is delicious, but the attitude is very bad. Go for it if you don't mind. 6️⃣ Zhang Lin A Shan Ginger Duck, the perfect combination of ginger flavor and duck, the duck meat is very tender, and the oyster omelette is delicious
The above is a brief record of my time in Quanzhou, a city with a profound cultural heritage. I'm ready to listen to a podcast about Quanzhou and visit it again, next time to seriously explore Kaiyuan Temple. See you next time, Quanzhou

Quanzhou in Fujian, a city of both worldly life and celestial charm
Quanzhou locals love and know how to eat; with the geographical advantage of being nestled between mountains and sea, they have everything from mountain delicacies to seafood. Mianxian Hu, Ginger Duck, Bamboo Shoot Jelly, Siguotang... A dazzling array of snacks, so much so that even Chen Xiaoching, the chief director of the renowned food documentary 'A Bite of China 2', who has tasted delicacies from all over the south of the Yangtze River, couldn't help but exclaim that no place in the country has such a rich variety of gourmet snacks as Quanzhou.
Quanzhou was the starting point of the ancient Maritime Silk Road in China, and it was seen by the famous Italian merchant and traveler Marco Polo as 'the biggest port in the world'. It was known as the global maritime trade center of China during the Song and Yuan dynasties. Just think, since ancient times, this place has been a gathering spot for merchants from various countries. When venturing out, people would pray for the protection of deities, hence Quanzhou has been dubbed 'the Buddhist Land in the South of Quanzhou' and 'Penglai of Southern Fujian', with sayings like 'a temple every three steps, a Buddha hall every five steps', and 'strolling in Quanzhou, you meet immortals around the corner'.
If every city were a book, then most cities would be dictionaries, but Quanzhou would be an encyclopedia. The history and culture of this city are never confined to museums but are found in the ordinary breaths of daily life. Its antiquity is not just about form and objects, but a temperament that still exists to this day.
