Shanghai Off-the-Beaten-Path Temple Tour | Tang Style
Late Tang dynasty style architecture, with exquisite wooden structures. The temple covers a large area, and in addition to the various halls for worship, there is a garden-style courtyard in the back, complete with a teahouse for long sits and daydreaming.
The most special aspect is the sound of wind chimes constantly echoing above the temple, bringing a sense of peace. As you walk and snap pictures, you can't help but praise the beauty, with the visit taking roughly 2 hours.
🎫 General admission is 20 yuan (forgot which group the 10 yuan tier applies to).
🅿️ There is a parking lot next to the main entrance, not sure about public transportation.

Shanghai's Most Beautiful Temple - Baoshan Temple
Shanghai's most beautiful temple, Baoshan Temple, was founded in the sixth year of the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty. In 2005, it was relocated and rebuilt in coordination with the renovation of the Luodian ancient town. It was designed and planned by Mr. Yu Zongqiao, a disciple of Liang Sicheng, featuring the architectural style of the late Tang Dynasty with pure wooden mortise and tenon construction. It is also the only temple in China that has received the Lu Ban Award.
To the east of Baoshan Temple lies the Zhi Garden, which is based on the architectural design of Tang Dynasty gardens. The Golden Pagoda in Zhi Garden is the first newly built seven-story pure wooden structure in the style of a Tang Dynasty tower in China in nearly a thousand years. When the wind blows, the wind chimes on the Golden Pagoda ring with a crisp and simple sound that calms the mind and nurtures the spirit.
Its location is somewhat remote and it is not heavily promoted, so there are no tourist groups or internet celebrities flocking to check in, making it a rare quiet place.

Under the trend of commercialization, how do Shanghai's temples make money?
In fact, the commercialization of temples is not only common but also has a long history. During the Tang and Song dynasties, temples not only engaged in business but also provided loans. The principal lent out was called 'merit', and the interest collected was called 'blessing', which is akin to the current practice of calling entrance tickets 'incense vouchers'. After all, monks are both renunciants and members of society, and temples are both transcendent and worldly. Therefore, I think as long as it conforms to the rules of secular society, the commercialization of temples is not objectionable.
So, what are the revenue streams for temples in today's economically developed Shanghai?
1. Entrance tickets. For example, Baoshan Temple and Jing'an Temple charge 20 yuan and 50 yuan per ticket, respectively. However, it is worth mentioning that there are also many temples in Shanghai that do not charge entrance fees, such as Jade Buddha Temple, Cao Wang Zen Temple, Fahua Zen Temple, Baoguo Temple, Huilong Temple, and so on;
2. Incense and dining. For example, Longhua Temple can be entered for free, but if you want to offer incense, you have to pay. Normally it's about ten to twenty yuan, and the amount adjusts flexibly during major festivals. The temple's vegetarian noodles are also very famous, with stories of Christians going through the trouble of taking multiple subway rides just to try them. It costs 15 yuan per serving with unlimited refills, and you pay after eating;
3. Cultural and creative products and short video sales. For example, Jing'an Temple has tens of thousands of followers on a leading platform and even runs a shop there selling products, although without a real person appearing on camera. Compared to some other famous ancient temples in China, its follower count is slightly lower;
4. Group business operations. This refers to temples establishing a business group that spans culture, tourism, food, education, and other fields through investment or company formation. It's clear that only the most prominent and profitable temples have the strength to do this;
5. Merit boxes, religious services, offerings, donations, land leasing, etc. These are quite common, so I won't go into detail.
What do you think about the commercialization of temples? Is there anything you would like to add?

In Shanghai, I finally found the ancient charm of the late Tang Dynasty
🔛 After murmuring to myself for several months, I still came because I truly love this Tang-style temple.
🌳 This secluded monastery, with fewer skyscrapers and bustling crowds, invites a sense of calm as you enter its gates.
🌳 It was founded in 1511 (the sixth year of the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty), over 500 years ago. Through dynastic changes and a restoration project restarted in 2005 that cost 800 million, it has been built into the most beautiful late Tang palace-style temple in Shanghai to date.
🌳 The entire temple is constructed using the quintessential Chinese mortise and tenon woodwork and has received the highest award in the construction industry, the 'Luban Award'.👍🏻
🌳 As you enter from the mountain gate, you are immediately greeted by the ancient Tang-style ambiance. The east and west corridors connect the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the Guanyin Hall, the Medicine Buddha Hall, the Jialan Hall, the Sutra Repository, and other structures, complemented by a unique Tang-style Zen garden and meticulous attention to detail, from the roof ridges, flying eaves, and decorative tiles to the water drips... Every aspect commands respect for the authenticity of this Tang-style architecture.
It's been said that it resembles Kyoto, but that's only because Japan has preserved more of the Tang-style architecture than China, giving people this impression.

Temple Tour | Shanghai Tangfeng Baoshan Temple Check-in Photo Guide
| Shanghai Tangfeng Baoshan Temple Check-in Photo Guide. Never thought that Shanghai could have such a niche and unpopular religious attraction. Baoshan Temple is located in Luodian Town, Baoshan District, perhaps because of its relatively remote geographical location, the pilgrims and tourists are quite "quiet" compared to other major temples in Shanghai, which is a great joy for photography enthusiasts.
Baidu Maps navigation "Baoshan Temple" can directly reach the entrance and exit, it is recommended to take a taxi or drive there, there is a free parking lot near the temple. To enter the temple, you need to "please" incense flower tickets, the price is 20 yuan/person, remember to only accept cash! Only cash! Only cash!
As soon as you enter the temple, you can see the main gate with the plaque "Baoshan Temple", located in a wide square open space, looking to the right of the main gate is a Tangfeng Pagoda, the view here is wide, take advantage of the absence of people to shoot with a wide angle, you can get very atmospheric photos.
After passing through the main gate, directly in front is a bridge tied with prayer red ropes, the other side of the bridge leads directly to the Heavenly King Hall, here you can still shoot with a wide angle, or when the wind blows, use a telephoto lens to take the blurred red rope as the foreground, and shoot the Heavenly King Hall from a distance (because it's far away, the Buddha probably won't be disturbed and blamed. The Heavenly King Hall on both sides enshrines some Buddhas in vertical niche areas, with few pilgrims, you can take some close-ups of incense burners, offerings, etc., and as a return, you might as well offer a stick of incense to these neglected Buddhas.
After the Heavenly King Hall is the main hall of the temple - the Great Hall, which is also the highest point of the temple besides the pagoda. In addition to wide-angle shooting of the main body of the Great Hall, you can also stand on the steps and look back at the pagoda and the side of the Medicine Hall, and of course, don't forget to give some close-ups to the flying eaves and bucket arches.
After visiting the Great Hall, you can enter the back garden of the temple from the side door, the signature building of the temple, the Tangfeng Pagoda, is in the garden. Along the paved road, you can visit the pagoda in 360 degrees, the best shooting positions include the pond on the north side of the pagoda, and the cherry tree on the east side of the pagoda, both can get beautiful photos. When you come to the foot of the pagoda, don't forget to shoot upwards at a 45-degree angle with a wide angle, which is very impactful.
Finally, some precautions, please do not take pictures of the monks in the temple without permission, do not disturb the pilgrims, the temple will arrange Dharma activities from time to time, if you encounter them, please act low-key, do not disturb. Remember that respect for people is as important as respect for Buddha.
If you are hungry after visiting the temple, walk about 500 meters north to a commercial street, where there is a Burger King
The Datang style temple in Shanghai--Baoshan Temple
Baoshan Temple in Shanghai is located in Luodian Town, Baoshan District, Shanghai. It was first built in 1511. With the passage of time, the temple has experienced ups and downs, and only the Hall of Heavenly Kings and the Great Hall of the Buddha remain. In 2005, Baoshan Temple was rebuilt, and the preserved Great Hall of the Buddha and the Hall of Heavenly Kings were constructed with Tang Dynasty construction techniques, presenting the simple and magnificent charm of late Tang Dynasty palace architecture.
🌟Highlights:
The trees, flowers, pagodas and pavilions in the garden complement each other, fully displaying the Tang style, Buddhist and Zen intentions, rich ancient charm, and tranquility.
Baoshan Temple | Is it the lingering charm of the late Tang Dynasty or the "doubt" of the late Tang Dynasty
Baoshan Temple is located in Baoshan Luodian, a relatively remote location, so although the architecture is magnificent and beautiful, there are not many pilgrims usually. The entire architectural complex was built during the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty, and due to changes and ups and downs, only the Heavenly King Hall and the Great Buddha Hall remain. What can be seen now are all Tang-style buildings that have been rebuilt and renovated.
"The new temple adopts the traditional Garan longitudinal axis layout, which is a late Tang palace-style architectural style. The structure is rigorous with African red flower pear pure wood tenon and mortise structure, simple and generous. The total building area of the temple is 12,000 square meters, ranking first among Buddhist temples in Shanghai."
The overall style of the temple is solemn and solemn, the pure wood tenon and mortise craftsmanship is ingenious, the first phase won the Luban Award, the second phase of the Gion has pavilions, towers, winding paths and corridors, the environment is extremely beautiful, the shooting effect is excellent, it must be said that it is indeed built at a high cost.
1⃣️Why renovate the Tang style on the Ming architectural complex? After checking some information, I found that it is exactly the same as the style of the earlier built Hong Kong Chi Lin Nunnery. I wonder if it was inspired by it?
2⃣️Is it a Tang architectural form? Entering the temple, it is indeed a time travel, but it is indeed not a time travel back to the Tang Dynasty of China. It seems to have traveled to Japan, which was extremely admired and constantly imitated by the Tang Empire. There is a faint shadow of the Tang Zhaoti Temple. As we all know, the basic color of our Tang architecture is red and white. You can refer to the real Tang Dynasty architecture of our country, Wutai Mountain Buddha Light Temple, the walls are painted white, and the wood structure is painted vermilion. The so-called white walls and red pillars can be said to be a very long tradition of our architecture. Han Yu's "New Repair Tengwang Pavilion" describes the outer eaves eroded by wind and rain as "red and white". And "During the Nara period in Japan, mainland styles were introduced to build palaces, and 'blue tiles and red pillars' became an important feature of the new style, distinguishing it from the wooden style of the local pit pillar-style buildings in Japan, and laid the basic color tone for the Heian period and later Heian-style buildings." In addition, the two golden finials make Baoshan Temple look more like a building that continues the Japanese imitation Tang style, which is quite regrettable.
⚠️⚠️Summary: A good place for photography. Don't blindly believe in the so-called late Tang style temple
⚠️⚠️: Incense ticket treasure 20, temple vegetarian meal 10 yuan per person, vegetarian meal only accepts cash, meal starts at 11 o'clock, go early. Eating + playing, it takes about 2 hours. It is recommended to go when it is drizzling, sit in the corridor of the Gion and taste tea, listen to the bell of the pagoda, knock on the ice jade, and the smoke is misty, which has a different charm.
Shanghai's Largest Treasure Temple|The Late Tang Bell Rings in Baoshan Temple
It's not the temple most familiar to Shanghainese, but it is the only temple in China that has won the highest architectural achievement award, the 'Luban Award'. It is also the largest temple in Shanghai, it is the Baoshan Temple (Baoshan Jing Temple), my favorite temple in Shanghai!
-
I have a special Buddhist connection with Baoshan Temple. It was the first temple I visited when I came to Shanghai, which was still the old temple site more than 500 years ago.
-
Not until it was rebuilt, the magnificent Late Tang architectural style, the unique African red flower pear pure wood mortise and tenon construction, the broad and profound yet subtly profound aesthetics, like a Buddhist art masterpiece, is truly amazing!

The Foodie Explorer s Log It's worth taking a 2-hour subway ride to visit the Baoshan Temple, a place that takes you back to the Tang Dynasty
Baoshan Jing Temple is located in Luodian Town, Baoshan District, Shanghai. It was established in the sixth year of Zhengde in the Ming Dynasty and has a history of 500 years. It has undergone several changes and has been prosperous and declined several times. Only the Heavenly King Hall and the Great Buddha Hall remain.
🌟 Since Master Dafa took charge of the temple affairs, it has been open and under construction. Now, within the range of seventeen acres, halls, towers, and pavilions are densely packed, spectacular, and well-arranged. The entire temple is surrounded by trees and water, with beautiful scenery, forming a bright scenic line for religious tourism in Shanghai.
❤ When I saw it with my own eyes, I had a feeling of 'dreaming back to the Tang Dynasty'. I was deeply attracted by these buildings. It can be said that it was worth my 2-hour public transportation journey. The temple is entered from the south 2nd door. The other doors were not open when I went, so don't take a detour.

Gion, a reproduction of Tang Dynasty architectural style
Gion is the newly built eastern garden of Baoshan Temple, a famous temple in Shanghai. It was opened to the public in June and is a beautiful ancient garden in the style of Tang Dynasty architecture. It is a unique temple garden that complements the pagoda and the scripture tower. It stands out in garden design and is unique.
The 55-meter golden tower inside is eye-catching. This is a mortise and tenon structure, a pure rosewood tower. No matter from which angle you look at the tower, it is very beautiful, and the photos taken are very beautiful. With this as the center, a series of ancient buildings such as pavilions, terraces, and corridors are planned and laid out, paired with flowers and trees, simple and clear, and returning to the original. People feel comfortable in it.

Baoshan Temple, as a temple in Shanghai, is also the only temple in the country that has won the 'Luban Award'
I chose to come to Baoshan Temple in Shanghai to pray, hoping to welcome the new year and pray for everything to go smoothly.
The history of Baoshan Temple can be traced back to the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty. It was rebuilt from the residence of the gentry Tang Yuexuan. The architecture of Baoshan Temple adopts the palace style of the late Tang Dynasty, with the mortise and tenon structure of pure African red pear wood, which is rigorous in construction and simple and generous.
Baoshan Temple, as a temple in Shanghai, is also the only temple in the country that has won the 'Luban Award', showing its exquisite and gorgeous architecture and its uniqueness. The entire temple building is ingenious, and each step has a unique landscape waiting for tourists. In the garden of the temple, there is also a seven-story Wanfo Pagoda. The pagoda uses a mortise and tenon structure. The wind chimes on the corners of the tower ring with the wind, spreading throughout the temple, giving people a sense of inner peace and concentration.
During the visit to Baoshan Temple, I not only felt the beauty of the architecture, but also experienced the atmosphere of tranquility and peace. Every step led me into the mysterious world deep in the temple, immersing me in the precipitation of history and culture.
Finally, with my sincere wishes, I prayed to the Buddha, hoping that everything will go smoothly in the new year. Baoshan Temple gave me an opportunity to think calmly and purify my soul. I hope that this tranquility and the power of prayer can accompany me into the new year and bring me a better future.

A seven-story pure wooden Tang-style tower, without a single nail, can withstand an eight-magnitude earthquake. Accompanied by the sound of wind chimes at the tower corners, you can stroll among the pines, osmanthus, towers, pavilions, pavilions, pavilions, and bridges in the garden.

The glorious and profound Baoshan Temple in Shanghai
Baoshan Temple, a legendary temple in the suburbs of Shanghai. Outside the temple, there are still a few logs left over from the construction of the temple, ranging from four people hugging to two people hugging, which shows its luxury. The temple has a strong Tang style, combined with the return of Japanese style. In the afternoon sun of this working day, it shines brightly, golden and brilliant. The wind of late autumn, sweeping over the gradually red maple trees, striking the tower bell, humming! What is it like in the world?
