Jordan's Greatest Archaeological Site

The Jerash Archaeological Site, situated in northern Jordan, has a rich history spanning over 6,500 years. Evidence suggests continuous human habitation since the Neolithic Age, with the city flourishing under Roman rule (from 63 BC) as Gerasa, a prominent member of the Decapolis League. Jerash's exceptional preservation is attributed to its location on dry land, avoiding the destructive effects of natural disasters like earthquakes and floods. This has resulted in the city becoming one of the best-preserved examples of Roman urban planning and architecture outside of Italy. Visitors can explore various structures like the colonnaded Oval Forum, the towering Artemis and Zeus Temples, and the expansive South Gate, each showcasing a blend of Greek and Roman influences. The Jerash Archaeological Museum within the site houses artefacts spanning various historical periods, offering further insights into the city's evolution. #cherryblossom2024
