The Royal Observatory, Greenwich

Greenwich, also transliterated as Grenwich, is a district of the Greater London, located on the south bank of the River Thames, southeast of London. From 1675 to 1948, it was the site of the Royal Greenwich Observatory. In 1884, the International Meridian Conference held in Washington decided to adopt the meridian passing through Greenwich as the Prime Meridian, serving as the starting point for calculating world time and geographic longitude. After World War II, the observatory was relocated to Herstmonceux on the southeast coast, and its original site was converted into the Royal Naval College, the National Maritime Museum, and others. There is a bronze plaque marking the Greenwich Meridian Line. Greenwich, located to the southeast of London, is the starting point of the Earth's meridians. This Prime Meridian is not only the basis for the establishment of Greenwich Mean Time but also serves as the dividing line between the eastern and western longitudes of the Earth.
