Valbuena de Duero Hotels & Accommodations

After waiting for three years to return because of the international travel restrictions, we found that this hotel has become one of Spain's most disappointing experiences in the last decade. Although the spa services continue to be of high quality and good value, the Restaurante Converso has become a trucker's stop with Manhattan prices. During a stay of one week, we couldn't stand the third night of airplane food, poor service, and outlandish prices. Instead, we decide to eat at the bar/cafeteria, which, at least, doesn't have the whiff of sophistication. Add to this that the suite had problems that you shouldn't find in a 5-star hotel (request extra towels and robes after spa services, replenish bottles of water, remind that the laundry was due two days ago, and, worse of all, ask to turn on the toilet tank's valve), and I can't recommend this hotel to anyone for the prices they charge. Sad to witness the descent to mediocrity and outright deception of a company that offered good value both at Burgo de Osma and Valbuena del Duero in the mid-2010s.

Posada La Casona de Valbuena is a renovated 18th-century property, which features impressive wooden beamed ceilings. It is located in Valbuena de Duero, 50 metres from the River Duero. All heated rooms and suites have wooden floors, a desk, TV and private bathroom with free toiletries. Suites also feature a spa bath and sofa. Some have a terrace. There are barbecue facilities and a café. A buffet breakfast is offered. Lunch and dinner are available upon request. There is a supermarket 100 metres away. Free Wi-Fi is available in public areas and there is free parking nearby. Guests can relax in the lounge, reading room or outdoor terraces.

At the last moment we changed our plans of staying in the Castilla Termal in Valbuena to stay here and be in town. Big mistake. The drive to get to the hotel is difficult through a narrow street by the river dodging people walking on the street and then a bridge that hardly fits two cars. But we did it for three days with only one hit to the curb. The hotel inside is nice. You can see the Castillo Peñafiel from the parking lot. Nice photo. As soon as you enter it smells clean and is very clean. We noticed that right away. The 3 points instead of 2 is because of the cleanliness. Also the restaurant was nice for one night. The beds were comfortable, but the bathroom was a challenge. You could hardly open the glass door to enter the shower because the bidet stops it. The shower was this huge system that you had to get under it to turn it on. As soon as you turned it on, you would get this hard spray of cold water to your head. We left the setting to open the hand held spray first and we put it facing the wall. Once the water heat up a little, we would change the setting to the shower, but still got a hard hit gosh of cold water first. it was annoying, to say the least. One of the sprays came straight to your chest and trying to avoid it, it soaked the towels hanging on the other wall . That's how strong this thing is. There was no space to stand to the side of this huge shower system. From the first day we kept letting the front desk know that our a/c was not stopping once it reached the temp we set of 24. Every night we kept having to get up to turn it off because it was too cold and then turn it on because the room was hot. We let them know every single day for three days and all we got was a front desk attendant trying to figure out the problem in her head. One of her recommendations was that she was going to set it to 23. I guess they control it, but that didn't make any sense. We got tired of trying to get them to understand. We left early in the morning and came back at the end of the day, so they had ample time to send someone to our room to fix it or at least look at it and see if it had something to do with the settings. On the last day we forgot to remove the red sign and the room was not cleaned, but that was our fault. But no comment that they had sent someone then, which would have been just as bad since it was our third day complaining, so they completely ignored our request and upon check out did not even apologize for the inconvenience we dealt with for 3 days. Breakfast was included, but we tried to go somewhere else and could not find any place nearby. The choices were not that great. The first day we asked for a tortilla and was offered bacon with it so we said okay. The tortilla was a flat rolled up omelette with nothing in it and the bacon was not cooked to a crisp.
