Villa Neri Resort and Spa
4.3/549 Reviews
This hotel is really beautiful. The drive up to the hotel is like driving up to a country house in the Lake District. The hotel grounds are immaculate and very pretty. Etna can be seen from the hotel as well as views of the surrounding hills and countryside. On entry to the hotel it feels very high end, the decor is stunning and the staff on arrival were welcoming and friendly. We definitely got the feeling that nothing was too much trouble during our stay. We were informed that use of the spa throughout our stay was complimentary which was a nice touch. Upon arrival we were asked if we wanted to make a reservation in the restaurant to which we agreed, however after seeing what was on offer we quickly changed our minds. There are two tasting menus available 120-150 euro per person. None of the food listed appealed to us and there was no way we were prepared to pay that price every night. Luckily we had hired a car which was much needed whilst staying at villa Neri. Sadly there is very little available in the surrounding area so in order to find nice places to eat you have to be prepared to travel. Normally this would not be an issue however it is a long way down the mountain every evening around hair pin bends and no street lighting!!! It was such a shame that the hotel didn’t offer a half board option or even a menu offering steaks or fish. We did actually eat in the restaurant on the last night as we just couldn’t face driving yet again. There was an option to choose dishes off the tasting menu separately. I chose a spaghetti dish which I was disappointed in as it was very expensive and very small. On the positive side the wine was lovely and the service amazing. The breakfast at the hotel was one of the best hotel breakfasts we have had. There was nothing that wasn’t available, everything you could possibly want was on offer and to a very high standard! The juice was so good as was the carrot cake!!! Our room was very spacious, the bed very comfortable and the cleanliness was of a very high standard. We had a couple of treatments in the spa during our stay, the price was reasonable for a spa but the facial I had was a little disappointing. All in all we enjoyed staying at Villa Nerri however we would not return due to the remote location and more importantly the lack of food options in the restaurant in the evenings. We would have loved to have eaten in the restaurant every night if only there had been some more affordable options. Thank you to all staff at the hotel who were all very welcoming and professional. If absolute peace, tranquility and luxury is what you are after then this could be the place for you but car hire is a must!!
Elephant's Smile B&B

Catania City Center
The B&B is located in a beautiful old building with high ceilings and balconies. The hosts are lovely; kind and helpful! They helped is out when we were in a difficult situation. We had booked another B&B in the same building but when arriving in the evening they couldnt accomodate us. The hosts of Elephant smile came to our ”rescue” and arranged for us to stay at their B&B. We are so grateful for that, and the fact that the B&B turned out to be such a lovely place made it even better. The price is also very reasonable. If you stay in Catania we really recommend this place!
NH Villa San Mauro

Pros: mostly clean, comfortable bedding and ok sized room. Showers and bath facilities nice. Breakfast buffet was varied and nice. Relaxing pool to chill and relax. Reception staff were supportive, helpful and checkin checkout was smooth efficient. Cons: poor wi-fi, bar service hit n miss, no local shops outside of a 20min walk towards town, tired worn carpets and stairways impact on overall impression. Air con was good but too loud and noisy for sensitive sleepers.
B&B Dimora Dell'Etna

Very good accommodation. In an old building, the floors are relatively high and the scenery is good. It is very close to the town square, and the car can be parked in the square. The charge is very cheap. It is very convenient to go downstairs to eat and go shopping. The room is so cozy. It is the room of the original landlord’s daughter. It has a large bed and a single bed. The room has heating facilities and the bathroom is relatively small. The landlord’s wife is very welcoming. Breakfast is 6 euros per person, which is very rich. It is used in the sun room on the roof terrace. Looking around, the scenery is beautiful. The landlord’s house used to be a mine. The sun room on the terrace also displayed books introducing their family. We chatted with the landlord’s wife for a while. Very good accommodation, the only downside is that you have to carry your luggage upstairs, which is probably the case in old houses.
Zash Country Boutique Hotel & Spa

Zash is an extraordinary jewel in terms of both food and service, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend staying there; I'm already planning to return. Let me deep dive into this a little. My husband and I stayed there for ten days in June 2023 - longer than the average stay, but we were looking to check out of the world and relax. And this is exactly what Zash offers. The food is incredible, as you'd expect of a Michelin-starred restaurant. The menu offers three set meals of five to seven courses, but don't be put off: they are happy to let you mix and match between them, or simply pick fewer courses at an a la carte price. The service was impeccable, and the sommelier was extremely knowledgeable about wines: he was also smart in assessing budget requirements and matching that to your preferences. The complimentary breakfast was amazing, too: fresh pastries and savories every day, plus eggs, pancakes, etc. as requested, and the staff could not have been more thoughtful or attentive. Other reviewers mentioned the railway line near the hotel, and I was a bit alarmed when I read this having already booked, but I needn't have worried: it was more of a low rumble in the distance (I thought it was thunder at first) and the trains are very short so although frequent, it never lasted long. I wasn't once woken by trains at night or during my siesta, but those who are very light sleepers might want to invest in a ”white noise” phone app, though I don't think you'll need it. Our room (a garden room very close to the main building) was wonderful and clean, and I loved the glass box shower (though we didn't really need two separate ones!) The only negative was the bed. Although it was a king and beautifully clean, the mattress was a bit of a nightmare. Admittedly I'm used to a Tempurpedic memory foam mattress, but this was sprung and I felt every single spring. Didn't sleep well, and very painful when I got up in the morning, but those less sensitive probably won't mind. As for the overall look and feel of the place, you won't find more beautiful gardens, and the pool was gorgeous. The double sunbed sofas were very comfortable (I should have slept on them at night!) though I'd say they were just starting to look a bit tired and one or two had small rips. I suspect Zash is just recovering after the trauma of the Covid pandemic, so I'd cut it a little slack, but a bit of low-level investment is probably due by next season. Finally, the location. Zash is off the beaten track, and frankly in a rather poor area. I never felt this was a safety issue, but the amount of trash thrown by the roadside was shocking, and a bit smelly when you had the car windows down. And yes, you definitely need a car if you want to go anywhere - nothing is in walking distance, but there are plenty of taxis. As for day trips, I'd recommend Taormino (a mountain-top town half an hour's drive away) - though it's pretty touristy, it's definitely worth a trip. The second season of White Lot

I have just returned from a lovely week here and I have to say that it exceeded my expectations. The staff are great, friendly and very helpful, quite a bit of English is spoken so it's fairly easy to get help with arranging things such as taxis, trains etc. It really helps when it comes to my general incompetence with the Italian language. My room was very clean and perfectly comfortable with air con which I imagine you will be very thankful of in the summer months! The pool area is also clean, tidy and well equipped with loungers and chairs, there's even a small bar where you can get what you need at a reasonable price. I chose to eat at the restaurant in the evenings and the food was excellent, a good selection and fairly priced in my opinion, portion sizes are also generous. There is a beach fairly nearby, say 1-2 km which you can walk to or there are bicycles available at the hotel if you are feeling confident, the roads are a bit ”exciting”, however this is not unusual in Sicily/Italy, there are always taxis and these are not expensive and probably safer. It is advantageous to have your own transport as it is a fair walk to the centre of Giarre and of course you will want to visit the many stunning sites on and around Etna itself, there is ample off-road parking at the hotel. In summary this is a fabulous place to use as a base to explore Etna and the many tourist hotspots up and down the coast, it's a very calm and relaxing place with a nice atmosphere, a good mix of nationalities and excellent food at a very reasonable price. It is the staff that made my stay so enjoyable, they are all lovely people and genuinely friendly, this to me makes a trip special and makes me want to return. Have a mentioned the lemon grove behind the hotel? You will have to go find out about that for yourself... Grazie mille Etna Hotel, see you next time!
