I read the reviews, but was swayed by the price of £91 for two nights, much cheaper than the Travelodge, a stones throw away. The hotel looks dated but quaint from the outside, better from the inside and I was pleasantly surprised. The hotel, and room 31 in particular are clean and tidy, the WiFi was not great so I used 4G, the bathroom is carpeted... but overall, the single room was fine. The hotel is just about central, although Newport is small so an 8 minute walk and you are in the town centre. My only complaint is that the 2nd floor room was TOO DAMNED HOT. I needed to go to the local B&M to buy a cheap fan. The room was sweltering, even with the window open it was impossible to sleep. You can borrow an Iron and ironing board, there is a hairdryer and flat screen TV in the room, but the male on reception gave a very quick "No" when I asked if they may have a fan. Top Tip to the Calverts Hotel - invest in some fans and put them in all of the top floor rooms. I cannot stress how impossible it was to sleep until 01:00 in the morning when some heat left the room - for this reason, I doubt if I could return, as I spent two uncomfortable nights in room 31. It wqs approximately 23 degrees in the sun, felt like 35 degrees in room 31. The Travelodge Newport has fans.
