Located at the top of Mount Tokachi, Ryounkaku offered breathtaking views of the mountain range and snowy backcountry landscape when we visited in February. An easy 45 min drive from Furano, there is ample free parking outside the onsen building or at the adjacent public car park.
We made a day visit to Ryounkaku and were able to rent towels which was super convenient. There is an old world charm to the onsen so expect rustic facilities. The female bath was tired looking due to years of staining from the copper coloured mineral onsen waters, but was adequately clean and tidy with full bath amenities provided.
What made our visit really special was the outdoor onsen which we got to enjoy all to ourselves as the only visitors at the time. The view of the mountains was nothing short of spectacular, with the back of the pool set into a small underhang of rocks which made us feel like we were bathing in a cave. Given how cold it was outdoors the water temperature was fairly tepid, but the views kept us there! We were thankful for the experience as we had read reviews that the outdoor onsens are sometimes closed due to weather conditions.
After our bath we retreated to a tatami room set aside for day visitors to enjoy some tea and to continue to soak in more of the views before leaving.

A super unexplored reddish-brown hot spring I've always wanted to go to a hot spring. I finally found it. The view was spectacular. It was like a painting. The water was lukewarm, so I took my time until the sun went down. The sea of clouds was the best view from my room. I stayed without meals, but my wife... They were very kind. It's a nice inn. It's hard for a hidden hot spring to survive, so I hope they do their best. I'll come again.

Since many rooms do not have a toilet, I booked a 12 tatami Japanese style room with a toilet. However, the guest room that was upgraded free of charge upon check-in was a real surprise.It was a wonderful suite room that had just been renovated and was unlisted on the homepage, with two bedrooms and double sinks that you wouldn't expect from a hidden hot spring inn. If I have any complaints, it's that the view is from the city side rather than the mountain side where you can enjoy the autumn leaves (although the sunsets are beautiful). Although the room is nice, the amenities are minimal, and the roof of the entrance eaves is a bit shabby. The hot springs are crowded with day-trippers from mountain climbing during the day, making it uneasy to relax, but the open-air bath with a spectacular view is well-regarded. Please note that this will stain the towel. The food is not luxurious, but considering it's mountain food, it's enough for a senior couple. Is it strange that the price for ``Taisetsu no Kura'' 300ml Honjozo, Junmai, and Junmai Ginjo is the same price of 800 yen? ! I was very satisfied with the hot springs and the rooms, and it was the best trip to CP.

Kamihoro-so day trip hot spring is closed so I went here. For payments other than cash, only auPay and Merpay can be used. Even though it was May, I was able to fully enjoy the open-air bath surrounded by snow. The open-air bath had a wonderful contrast between the brown water and the snowy landscape. If the weather is nice, the view looks good.
