Best Western Plus Hotel Ilulissat

Ilulissat|1.92km from Sermermiut
This is the newest hotel in town -fresh and ready! Top marks of it -is the location and the roof terrace. My room came with the view of ice-fjord, village & harbours, the little landmark church. 3 huge floor length windows, the middle part can be open to a 90 degree angle. All hotel staff were friendly, accommodating, always willing to help. The highlight was the rooftop bar and restaurant, extended to an open deck. As we come for the included breakfast; step out of the lift, greeted with jaw-dropping views: ice-fjord of all sizes floating on the harbour, on the distance, everything is glittering under the low hanging sun. This's truly ”On Top of the World!” All of the sudden, all your problems/complains fixed instantly! The buffet breakfast was wonderful and delicious. Dinning here on sunset is equally enchanting. The menu was simple western a la carte choices with local fish. It was expensive but presentation was beautiful and, it was very delectable. I especially liked the little free info. booklet they provide on the front desk. A small hard copy print of Ilulissat with color photos and simple backgrounds on the museum and, directions of a few different walks. Also provided were free stylish folded little map of good shops and important landmarks around town. I loved those prints so much and took them home with me as souvenir. Would love to come back in winter for northern lights & other adventures. I stayed 5 nights and got a free night for future stay in all BW hotel as a reward. Love it.

We did book in February by hotels.com for two times two nights end of June. The night in between we did stay at the Eqi Lodge. We did get some major issues with this hotel, but I do not know who to blame; the hotel or hotels.com. First we did charge 310 DDK (~ 44 euro) more as booked by hotels.com Because it is not possible to complain by hotels.com except by telephone (only an option when you like to wait forever) I do not know who to blame. But if you want to book this hotel, pay in advance. We were not picked up by the airport. We did need to arrange (and pay) a taxi ourselves. According the hotel there was a miscommunication with hotels.com. Minor point: They called them self a hotel, but rooms were not cleaned during the weekend. We did get clean towels after asking for it. The hotel does not have a 24 hours reception. For the good points: Good breakfast at their restaurant at the other side of the street. Very complete (!) room with a kitchen including magnetron, refrigerator, plates, pans etc. Clean, nice rooms with a good bed, a table and two chairs. Good shower. Good wifi. Free café, thee and coco. (The second time there was not much café.) They arranged a way to check-in after office time (close at 6PM) at 7PM coming back from our trip from Eqi Lodge. The location of the hotel is in the center of town, close to 3 supermarkets, several restaurants (mostly closed) and several tour operators. Even with the 300 DDK extra and taxi costs, still a less expense option compared with most other hotels in town. gps: 69.218345, -51.098666

Hotel Arctic

We booked the Aurora cabins with so much hope - a glass cabin sounded amazing! But there are key things you need to know. While the price is luxury level, some clear basics are missing and services does not make up for it. There is no room service to Aurora cabins, and they are external and back from the hotel. There is an outdoor door and then a long path. That door, mid winter, is closed, but they don’t tell you that. They let you walk out of it at night, but when you try to go back out in the morning, you’re locked out. In addition, WiFi does not work, and there are no technicians. If you’re thinking of watching northern lights from the cabin, you NEED to know that the path leading to the cabins is always lit up, and there are no black out curtains. No matter how many times you ask, they will do nothing about it, and lights will reflect against the glass all night. You can’t do anything about it.

The hotel is conveniently located in the centre of the town, with the Ilullisat Museum (10am-4pm) and an Akiki Supermarket (7am-10pm) within a 1 minute walk. The room looks a little dated but it is clean and comfortable. The staffs are friendly and they are ok to store my luggage after checkout. There is a free airport shuttle that coincides with ingoing/outgoing flights (check with the reception for the shuttle schedule). The wifi is free but is very slow (sufficient for emails but not recommended for photos/videos). Although my room's window faces inland, I managed to get a nice view of the sea and the icebergs from the reception area and from the restaurant where the free continental breakfast is served. One thing to take note: The roads in Ilullisat have no proper pavements and are often covered in sand and gravel. Although there is a doormat at the hotel entrance for visitors to brush away the sand under the shoes, some sand inevitably makes its way into the lobby and the corridors. It's best to take off your shoes immediately after entering your room, to avoid bringing sand all over the hotel room floor.

Stayed for 4 nights - very easy going, friendly hotel. The rooms heat up very quickly which was welcome. Breakfast was simple and plentiful. The staff were super helpful. My guess is it’s a 3* rating so better value to the 4* Arctic Hotel next door which we used for some evening meals and taxis etc.
