Friendly and helpful welcome when we checked in. First thing we noticed was how clean and well organised the place was, and this was maintained right through our visit - every day the public areas, particularly the member's kitchen, were in perfect order whenever we got back in the late afternoon. Public areas comprise a large dining area with different size tables, at the end of this are sofas around a woodburner. Off this is a large and well equipped Member's kitchen, with 2 microwaves, 2 fridges etc. Far better than so many hostels nowadays. There's also a small separate lounge with a TV. Upstairs plenty of toilets and showers so no queuing. Outside the car park at the front is very tight and rather muddy, which caused a few issues, but there is on road parking at the front and side too - the hostel is on a quiet side road so no worries about leaving the car out. Convenient spot - it's very quiet with just distant noise from the A170 road but very handy with the market square reached via quiet roads and an alley within 5 minutes. When we visited the other guests were a mixture of cyclist groups, families, couples and a few bikers. This is just luck but everyone there with us was friendly, relaxed and mainly chatty which added to the good atmosphere. Shout to the Baz the warden who was on duty, great ambassador for the YHA with his hard work and sense of humour.

This hostel has a very warm and welcoming ambience. The communal eating and socialising area is cosy with a wood burning stove, lovely colours and plenty of interesting books and magazines. The man at reception is very knowledgeable and friendly with about the area with excellent recommendations. This warmth and friendliness of this hostel stands out and reminds us of what real hostels are.

A very friendly chap on the desk was informative about where to eat with it being quite late on arrival and was helpful and pleasant throughout our stay. A nice hostel in a convenient and central location, a hearty breakfast too. Recommended 👍

Helmsley Hostel ticks all the boxes. The rooms are tastefully decorated, immaculately clean. The hostel is minutes walk from the village centre, with it's many attractions. AND the staff at the hostel go out of their way to answer queries and provide information about the area.

Had a couple of nights here with my 2 children (age 8 and 9) - we had the ground floor ensuite room. The room was spotless and the beds were very comfortable. Members kitchen was really well equipped so we went out for dinner one night and cooked for ourselves the second night. The warden was really friendly and helpful, getting games for the children and giving guidance and recommendations for walking to Rievaulx Abbey (6 mile round walk) which we really enjoyed. Overall a brilliant stay!

Arrived, checked in, shown around by a very helpful guy who’s name I didn’t catch. Had to park on the road as car park was full but it’s a quiet area so not an issue. Camped in the field adjacent the hostel and was served a great breakfast in the morning. Couldn’t fault it for what we wanted it for. Will use again.

We had a lovely night here after a day at Flamingo land, before taking our bikes to Sutton Bank. Baz who seemed to run the place was friendly, and clearly took pride in running a clean and efficient hostel. It was a lovely weekend and there were several families camping in the garden. I believe there were just 8 bedrooms so this place is small and friendly. We got fish n chips for tea from the chippy 5mins walk away. There was also a Co Op, just a couple more minutes walk away closer to the centre. The YHA Hostel does not offer an evening meal but there is a decent equipped kitchen so you can cook your own dinner. Baz cooked us a delcious breakfast, which was served at 8.30, and there was continental to help ourselves to as well. (Kids eat free). He asked at check in about any dietary requirements; I said I avoid dairy, so there was soya milk avaliable at breakfast. Our bunk beds were typical YHA ones and were comfortable. We had a large 6 person room (for 4 of us) and the toilet and showers were next to our room. The showers were hot and powerful and the facilites were clean and well kept. Our bedroom was clean and spacious. Each bed had its own plug socket and USB charger and night light As well as the dining / lounge area (with wood stove and logs avaliable) there is a playroom which has a TV and some toys for children. The garden was secure and it was nice to eat dinner in the garden. We bought a bottle of wine (£15) as own alcohol is strictly not allowed, and soft drinks are avaliable from reception too. We mentioned that we had our bikes with us and were offered the use of the secure cycle store. The car park was not big enough to accomodate our car (Land Rover Discovery + 4 bikes on the tow bar rack on the back) but we felt safe leaving the car and bikes (which were locked on) overnight on the road. (car would have fitted easily without bikes on back) There was free wifi from the cloud, but we had full phone signal so found it easier to use our (unlimited) data. There was water bottle refill stations in reception. This is a delightful small hostel, which is clean and cheap and cheerful and I would most definitely return. Thanks to Baz who works so hard to make sure everything is running smoothly. This is a lovely small and friendly hostel and I would definitely return. Also worth noting that check in is between 5pm and 8.30pm only. You can not arrive at the hostel outisde of these times, but once you have checked in you have the code so can access 24/7 throughout the rest of your stay.

Booked for a one night stay with my daughter on our first camp away. After a day's walking around Roseberry topping and a visit to the nearby Rievaulx Abbey we arrived at the hostel a little before it opened at 5pm. Small car park in site with space for about seven cars but plenty of off-road parking nearby. Conscious of how long it has taken me to put up the tent in the back yard we got on with unpacking and putting up the nights cover. Just before 5pm we made our way to reception and were checked in by Baz. He was very helpful and friendly and explained the lay out of the building. The location of the hostel is a short 5 minute walk from the main hub of Helmsley so close to bars and restaurants. We picked up our fish and chip order and made our way back to the accommodation. The nights sleep was peaceful with just a little traffic noise from the main road but given the hostels location there was minimal other noise. Breakfast was served by Baz and was well cooked. Both myself and my daughter were full and we went to unpack the tent and make our way home. Will definitely return as I aim to walk the Cleveland way for the local hospital in memory of my late father.
