The Tower Hotel

Main Road, Harwich, United Kingdom
Show on Map
Built in 1885, in the Italian style, as a private residence, the main feature of this imposing building is the attractive tower at its northeast corner. It has a wealth of ornamental ceilings, cornices, beautiful architraves and is crowned by an impressive balustrade. It is not surprising to find this is a classified Grade Two-Listed Building. Set in its own pleasant leafy grounds, it retains an air of bygone elegance. However, in line with its admirable adaptation to its new life as a hotel, it has wide, easy access to the main road at either end of its sweeping drive.Show More

This was a Family visit whilst staying at local holiday park We dined at this restaurant after viewing the website and decided it looked nice and spacious for a party of eight which included a toddler. The service was good and food was very tasty and well cooked, not much food was left from any of our party! The decor is lovely and the seating is very well organised with plenty of room between diners . We would definitely visit again and recommend a visit just to see the ornate ceilings

This is a magnificent building with a grand staircase. The interior spaces such as the bar and restaurant are very comfortable and the exterior seating area and garden excellent. The staff were very friendly. The room was a good size but had a couple of *******. There was no easy height shelf in the bathroom and no shelf at all in the shower. The power socket for the hair dryer was under the dressing table making it both difficult to access and also leaving the power cord too short.

Visited first in 2021 for carvery very impressed. Returned this week had nice Prawn Cocktail. Others had Leek and potato soup said very nice. Main orders one fish and chips said nice.two ordered Steak and ale pie very nice except asked for potatoes instead of the chips stated on the menu and they came up as new potatoes cut up instead of being left whole so looked messy and the peas that came with these meals the small amount barely a tablespoon of peas very poor.. Found the day after our visit they were doing two meals for £16.OO which included our two Steak and Ale pies but we were not offered that or told about it. One who had the Curry said nice but the Nan bread was too thick and very doughy. Upon arrival there it took them 45 minutes to deliver our starters yet we’re not busy at all.Had to ask the young girl server what the soup was she said did not know had to go and ask. That comes down to poor management surely? The place is beautiful but letdown by staff that do not seem to match the ambience of this place.Shame really.

Unfortunately nothing like I remembered it when we used to eat here years ago. Booked to take my parents for lunch as my dad (80) couldn’t get a table a few months back and had never taken husband before either. Whilst the venue still hasn’t lost its charm for me, the Sunday carvery was sadly terrible! Beef - was black so most of mine was hard and not like meat. The nice lady serving said it’s done like that as people don’t want rare. Carrots - no taste so maybe reheated too many times Broccoli, pea and leek(?) mix was a mush so overcooked or frozen broccoli. Red cabbage - hard. Such a shame as the staff were lovely but the meal was memorable for the wrong reasons. The family member who had the veggie parcel option said it was nice and the roast potatoes were okay.

We booked The Towers for a baby shower and can’t praise the food and service enough. We were a large group of 25 and each and every one of us were so happy with the experience. The afternoon tea was a great quality and there was so much of it! It was displayed professionally and we didn’t even have to ask for boxes to take leftovers home as they were provided. Staff were helpful all through the booking process and we were welcomed in early to decorate the tables etc. The dining room itself is wonderful and a great setting for a special occasion. Thank you to all the staff who were a part of our lovely afternoon.

My review is late, we stayed here in '21 & wanted to get away from home, somewhere near the sea. The welcome was great on arrival, we had arrived late, just as the restaurant was closing but the chef agreed to make us some food. It was tasty & reasonably priced. We ate outside in the garden area, lovely outside space. Our room was big, comfy bed with a spa bath & separate shower, only complaint & not much to be done about it, was that it faced the sun in the morning so the room was baking! A fan was provided but it really needs A/C. No noise from the outside due to secondary glazing so I'd imagine it would be lovely in the winter months. All staff were excellent, very friendly & accommodating, would stay again.

We held my mother's 80th birthday meal here, we had the River Room. From booking to the actual meal nothing was too much trouble. The service and the food were excellent, I can not fault it. I would highly recommend The Tower Hotel for a family celebration. Well done to all the staff front and back.

Large birthday meal booked on the 8th of January, table 7. 12.30pm. Food took ages to be served despite having to pre-order. Just commenting on our part of the (1 adult 2 child) found the Kiev over cooked, dry and burnt on the underside. Kids meals which neither child would/could eat (I don't blame them) burger was burnt and dry, chicken nuggets were a horrible dark colour and so dry that my child was unable to swallow them, they left the meal and ate once home. No member of staff came to check to ensure we were happy with the meal, not wanting to make a fuss as my grandmother had organised it and was embarrassed. I thought I would contact the restaurant later. After contacting the towers via their online contact form, also discussing my concerns via the phone I was told no manager was available but was told someone would call me back. This never happened, and im still waiting...... I felt my only option was to try contacting via Fb and left a comment regarding my complaint and the Towers seem to think its ok to hide their head in the sand and just delete my comments. Always used the towers for our family meals in the past as they have a good selection of food and nice size room, but sadly i don't think we will not be returning with poor customer service like this. OK, fair enough some places get it wrong every now and then... but come on.... at least deal with the issue to try to resolve it with the customer

Nice venue. Gents toilet could do with update and did have an odour. Service could have been better. Example being bottle of wine bought over without the cork being taken out and had to ask for this to be done. The carvery was nice but brisket was used instead of a better cut of beef. Although my roast potatoes were fine, someone in my party has hard ones, so a bit hit and miss. Yorkshire pudding was cold. Gravy was spot on. As above, for the price you couldn't knock it. Could have done with a few Christmas crackers and a bit of Christmas music would have improved the atmosphere which was a bit flat. Wouldn't go there for a special occasion but OK if you just want a carvery.
