My fiancée and I visited the Hand on a cold December Tuesday for a spot of lunch. I had visited before many years ago and remembered it to be a cosy pub with excellent food. I had remembered correctly. We were offered a table by the large log fire and our drinks were brought to us whilst we looked over the menu. By no means the biggest choice I’ve ever seen but that is often a good sign. I chose the Gammon and Chips, with a Peppercorn Sauce added, the better half had the Braised Beef Pie. The Gammon was the best I’ve ever had, cooked to perfection, not overly salty like many are. The Chips were incredible, crispy, tasty, and perfect to dip in the pepper sauce, which wasn’t creamy and mild, it was spicy and almost oriental in taste. The Pie came with at least half a pint of gravy, which was a huge bonus, covered in baby onions, and served with more amazing chips and a side plate of vegetables. We both agreed it was fantastic, I had the cheeseboard to follow whilst Sue had the Sticky Toffee Pudding, again both were excellent. The Quince jelly with the cheese was a great addition. We think the bill may have been missing a charge for the pint of Cider I had with my cheese, we will certainly sort that out when we return because we both agreed this was the best pub food we’ve had in years. Thank you to the staff who asked all the right questions at all the right times, we look forward to returning, and we’ll most likely stay the night next time.
