🇬🇪 Mtskheta — The Ancient Capital You Shouldn’t Miss

If you’re spending a few days in Tbilisi, save one day for Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia and one of the country’s most important historical and spiritual places.

It’s only about 20 km from Tbilisi, but the atmosphere feels completely different — old stone churches, mountains, narrow streets and centuries of Georgian history in one small town.

⛪ Svetitskhoveli Cathedral — the absolute must
Start with Svetitskhoveli, the magnificent 11th-century cathedral in the heart of Mtskheta. This is one of Georgia’s most important religious monuments and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Take your time inside — don’t just photograph the exterior. The scale, ancient stonework and surviving frescoes make this one of the most impressive churches I saw in Georgia.

⛰ Go up to Jvari Monastery
After exploring the town, drive up to Jvari Monastery, standing high above Mtskheta. The church dates to the 6th–7th centuries and the location is spectacular.

This is where you get the famous panoramic view of Mtskheta and the meeting of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. Definitely one of the photographs to take home from Georgia.

🕊 Samtavro Monastery
If you have time, also visit Samtavro. Georgia’s first Christian king, Mirian III, and Queen Nana are buried here, making it another important part of Mtskheta’s history.

🚶 Walk through Mtskheta
Don’t make this only a church tour. Walk through the little streets around Svetitskhoveli, browse the local stalls, try Georgian sweets and wine, and stop somewhere for lunch.

✨ My recommendation: don’t book Mtskheta as a rushed photo stop. Give it at least half a day. Start in the old town and Svetitskhoveli, have lunch, and finish at Jvari for the panoramic view.

From Tbilisi: around 20 km — an easy day trip and, for me, one of the essential experiences in Georgia.

Tbilisi: we almost ate on the worst street in town. Do this instead

First night we almost sat down on Shardeni because a waiter smiled and the English menu looked easy. Glad we walked away. Same khinkali two blocks over tasted better and cost maybe half. If you are flying into Georgia soon, steal this plan.

Airport to city without getting milked

Bus 337 from the airport to the center is about 1 GEL. Pay with a bank card tap or Metromoney.

Bolt from TBS into town is often around 25-40 GEL depending on traffic and luggage. Fine late at night when you are fried.

Metromoney / travel card is about 2 GEL at metro cashiers or Bank of Georgia express points. Keep the receipt. City metro/bus/minibus rides are about 1 GEL with 90 minutes of free transfers if you pay the right way (card tap). Cash-only on some buses can kill that transfer window.

Ropeway note: Rike to Narikala is about 2.5 GEL one way. Worth it once for the fortress view. Turtle Lake ropeway is cheaper and quieter if you want hills without the postcard queue.

What actually tasted better

Khinkali: look for busy places with locals and short menus. Around 0.80-1.50 GEL each. Order 5-8. Bite the top, drink the broth, do not put the knot in your mouth like a tourist challenge video.

Khachapuri from a tonis bakery: often 2-8 GEL depending on style. Acharuli boat with egg is more at sit-down spots.

Lobiani and shoti bread: cheap bakery fuel. Perfect between climbs.

House Georgian wine by the glass: often 5-8 GEL and better story than imported beer.

Where food disappointed us

Shardeni / heavily hawked Old Town terraces: higher price, average plates, someone waving you in from the sidewalk. Walk past. If a waiter follows you down the street, that is your red flag.

Restaurants glued to Metekhi Bridge viewpoint: you pay for the photo angle. The view is free from outside.

hat we would skip next time

1. Full day of only Old Town checkboxes with no neighborhood food.

2. Random street taxi without a price agreed, or without Bolt/Yandex Go. Short city hops are often a few GEL in-app.

3. Buying a big currency dump at the worst airport rate. Change a little for the first bus/coffee, do the rest in town (Didube / Freedom Square exchangers or a sensible ATM with your own card fees in mind).

4. Trying to "see all of Georgia" from Tbilisi in 48 hours. Pick one day trip.

Sulfur baths (do it once, do it right)

Abanotubani is the smell you will remember. Communal can be cheap (ballpark 5-15 GEL depending where). Private room with pool/steam often roughly 50-150 GEL per hour depending on bathhouse and extras.

Chreli Abano looks iconic in photos. Book busy hours ahead. Bring flip flops energy and an open mind. Afterward you will walk slow and want water and khinkali. That is normal.

Day trip math: Kazbegi vs chill Mtskheta

Kazbegi (Stepantsminda):

Marshrutka from Didube often about 15-20 GEL each way. Leave early. Vans leave when full. Chaos is part of the game.

Group tours often about 80-120 GEL and usually hit Ananuri / Friendship Monument stops the marshrutka skips. Ask if Gergeti 4x4 is included. Extra jeep up is often around 25 GEL if not.

Private car for a group can land around 150-250 GEL for the vehicle and can split well.

Mtskheta for a lighter day:

Marshrutka from Didube about 1 GEL, roughly 20 minutes. Svetitskhoveli and Jvari views without the mountain grind. Better if your legs are dead from Old Town hills.

A 3 day shape that felt good

Day 1: Old Town walk, Narikala ropeway, sulfur bath late afternoon, dinner NOT on Shardeni.

Day 2: Kazbegi OR Mtskheta. Not both unless you hate sleep.

Day 3: Dezerter Bazaar morning (go hungry), Marjanishvili / left bank food crawl, one wine bar, early night.

Rough daily money (per person, mid range vibe)

Transit in city: a few GEL if you tap right

Food: 40-60 GEL easy if you eat local; 80-130 GEL if you do nicer dinners with wine

Bath: skip, communal, or private depending how soft you want the evening

Kazbegi day: 30-50 GEL DIY marshrutka style, or ~100 GEL class tour territory before food.
