Hawkshead is an ancient township that had flourished since norse times. This tiny village is still in the same collection of white paint houses. The 17th century church of St Michael stands high looking over the village and has a fine view to Esthwaite water which is 2 kilometers 25 minutes away. The old grammar school was found in 1585 by the Archbishop of York. The ground floor classroom retains many old desks including the poet Willam Wordsworth.
