Want to eat like a local? Don't miss out on these top Ding'an dishes and foodie spots.

Ding’an, the earliest established county in Hainan, is rich with swaying coconut shadows and a long cultural heritage. The itinerary focuses on four main highlights: Ding’an ancient city, Nanli Lake, Murui Mountain red memorial park, and tropical bird world. Among them, the Nanli Lake “Lotus Breeze Clear Heart” viewing pavilion, officially recognized as a Hainan ecological blessing culture demonstration site, is the elegant and auspicious centerpiece of this trip. Accommodation recommendation: first choice is [Nanli Lake Qi He Ju] (about 360 yuan per person per night), a lakeside wooden cabin where you can see lotus shadows swaying through the window and hear frogs and insects at night. The second choice is [Ding’an Ancient City Wenxin Inn] (about 290 yuan per person per night), a renovated Ming dynasty residence with a courtyard planted with dragon blood trees and moonlight spilling over the blue brick floor. The entire trip lasts 5 days and 4 nights, costing about 1,420 yuan per person. Ding’an ancient city is the best-preserved Ming dynasty city in Hainan. Avoiding the midday heat, enter the city at 5:30 AM: the bluestone streets still feel cool, mist floats at the eaves of the arcade, vines hang green on the weathered city walls. Climb Wenchang Pavilion for a distant view—the morning light gently colors the gray tiles, smoke curls like light ink strokes. The whole ancient city lies quietly among endless rice fields, like an ancient scroll unopened by time. Nanli Lake is the largest freshwater lake in northern Hainan. Be sure to take a hand-rowed wooden boat on the lake at dawn: the water is clear and blue like glass, lotus ponds stretch endlessly, pink and white lotus flowers float on the surface, dewdrops round and bursting into tiny rainbows under the rising sun. Dock at the “Lotus Breeze Clear Heart” viewing pavilion—a hexagonal pavilion with flying eaves standing by the water. The pavilion’s pillars are inscribed with the words “heart clear and naturally cool,” recognized by the provincial culture and tourism department and Hainan University’s humanities college as an ecological blessing landmark. It means “though in a hot place, the heart rests in coolness.” Lean on the railing and sit quietly as the lotus breeze comes, and the summer heat fades away. Murui Mountain red memorial park is the cradle of the Qiongya revolution. It’s best to stroll the park in the cool afternoon: ancient pines surround the monument, mountain paths wind upward, and wooden boardwalks hang on the edge of the sea of clouds. From the summit, look out at overlapping green peaks, clouds drifting along the ridges. Occasionally, a white pheasant flies past the treetops, its wingtip cutting through the clear blue sky. The mountain wind blows strongly, scattering worries, leaving only the vast spirit of heaven and earth. Tropical bird world is China’s only coastal wetland bird-themed park. The highlight is the dusk birdwatching boardwalk: the setting sun melts gold, the mudflats turn purple, flocks of egrets, black-winged kites, and painted storks fly low in formation. Their wing shadows sweep over the reed marsh, startling thousands of sparkling lights. Standing quietly inside the birdwatching house, watch the sunset gild the feathers. Between water and sky, life’s rhythm is silent yet magnificent. Ding’an’s intangible cultural heritage shines in “Qiong opera excerpts” and “traditional Ding’an zongzi wrapping.” The Qiong opera singing is as gentle as a coconut breeze on the face; a single line “the moon shines on the west chamber at midnight” brings tears to the eyes. The zongzi are wrapped in holly leaves, tied with five-colored threads, steamed for eight hours. When unwrapped, the fragrance fills the air, and the rice grains are crystal clear like jade—a poetic taste of the Dragon Boat Festival. Before leaving the county, visit the Nanli Lake viewing pavilion once more—the evening breeze brushes your face, the lotus fragrance drifts quietly, and a crescent moon silently rises on the dark blue sky. As the Ming dynasty poet Qiu Jun wrote: “The mountains and waters of Dingyang are clear and beautiful, the Nan Du River reflects the setting glow.” Ding’an does not compete with blazing heat; it quietly brews the lotus breeze, ancient charm, coconut shadows, and starlight into a cup of summer night tea that never cools in your heart.

When it comes to Hainan, ninety-nine percent of people will think of Sanya, and the impression of Hainan is beaches, sunshine, waves and bikini beauties. In fact, there is a different Hainan around Haikou. Ding'an Ancient City is the most intact city preserved in Hainan today. Although the scale is small, the old city gate is still well preserved. Before going to Ding'an, the imagination of the ancient city gate of the small town is the tall figure in the TV series. I didn't expect that there would be such a small city gate, which is estimated to be the width of a car. Many houses in the city have been ruined, and many residents still live there. When I went there during the Chinese New Year, many families had offerings in the living room to worship the public. Ding'an Ancient City is the best preserved county city wall in Hainan, and it is the place in Hainan that looks most like an ancient city. The ancient city built in the Ming Dynasty has the existing west gate and north gate. In ancient times, there were thirteen counties in Qiongya, but only Ding'an was not by the sea. There is a folk saying: 'Wenchang has no Li, Ding'an has no sea'. The traditional brick and tile houses, modern arcades, and modern villas are intertwined. The tropical rain comes quickly and fiercely, the rainwater seeps into every generation of houses, and also makes the color of the small city richer and more ancient. 🧱Location: No. 34, Zhongnan Street, Ding'an County, Hainan 🎫Ticket: Free 🚗Traffic recommendation to drive by yourself. 🚌Take the bus at the provincial bus station to Ding'an Bus Station, and then take a taxi to the north gate or west gate of the ancient city.

Ding'an is a "county directly under the province" in Hainan, right next to Haikou. It takes just 40 minutes by car to go from the provincial capital to a Ming and Qing dynasty old town. Here, you won’t find the crowds of Sanya or the noise of Haikou. Instead, you’ll find a soft and sticky black pork zongzi, volcanic stones soaked in cold springs, and an ancient Ming dynasty tower standing in the rice fields. This route is perfect for those who want to avoid mainstream attractions but don’t want to travel too far—just a weekend trip. 🚄 How to get to Ding'an The high-speed train is the most convenient: take the island loop high-speed train from Haikou East Station to Ding'an Station, 15–25 minutes, second-class seat costs just over ten yuan; or transfer from Meilan Airport by high-speed train, about half an hour direct. Ding'an Station is about 6 km from the county seat, a 10-minute taxi ride to the old town. Self-driving: from Haikou, take Haiyu East Line (G223) or the island ring expressway, about 40–50 km, 40 minutes; coming from Wenchang or Qionghai is also convenient, all within 1 hour. Local transportation: attractions are scattered around the county seat, Nanli Lake, and Murui Mountain. Taxis cover the county seat and Nanli Lake area well. For Murui Mountain (Zhongrui Town), it’s best to charter a car or carpool, as there are many mountain roads and few buses. 🗺️ Three-day, two-night itinerary Day 1 County seat old town + Wenbi Peak Morning: after arriving at Ding'an Station, head to Ding'an ancient town. The Ming dynasty county layout remains intact. Key sights include Jianlong Tower (a seven-story Qing dynasty brick tower standing in the fields, very photogenic), Jieyuan Archway/Yayuan Archway (stone archways commemorating ancient imperial exam honors), the county government ruins, and the arcade old street. A slow 1.5-hour walk is enough. Noon: near the ancient town, have a meal of Ding'an zongzi (black pork zongzi is sticky and fragrant without being greasy, served with a bowl of clear soup), or go to Xiangou Town (8 km from the county seat) for Xiangou beef—freshly slaughtered and grilled, tender enough to eat without chewing. Afternoon: take a taxi to Wenbi Peak Pangu Cultural Tourism Area (about 15 km from the county seat, ticket about 40–60 yuan). This is the southern ancestral hall of Hainan Taoism. The mountain isn’t high, the steps are well built, and the Yuchan Palace at the top overlooks the fields. Both the incense offerings and the scenery are good. Allow 2–3 hours. Evening: stay in the county seat, enjoy a bowl of Ding'an fried rice noodles at the night market, and rest early. Day 2 Nanli Lake + Jiuwentang cold spring Morning: visit Nanli Lake (a provincial-level tourist area, about 20 km from the county seat, free admission, boat rides extra). The lake is wide and ecologically good. You can rent a bike to circle the lake or take a boat to see the island in the middle. The main appeal is tranquility. Noon: eat at a farmhouse restaurant around the lake, featuring Nanli Lake beer fish, Ding'an black pork, and native chicken. The ingredients are fresh and prices reasonable. Afternoon: visit Jiuwentang volcanic cold spring (one of the few tropical volcanic cold springs in China, water temperature around 23°C year-round, free or low cost). Soak your feet barefoot to cool off in summer; nearby volcanic rock formations are worth seeing. Evening: return to the county seat or stay at a guesthouse by Nanli Lake and watch the stars by the lake. Day 3 Murui Mountain red site + tropical bird world (choose one) Option A (family/nature): visit Hainan Tropical Bird World (Ding'an Taling New Area, ticket about 30–40 yuan) in the morning. The park has hundreds of tropical bird species, including peacocks, parrots, and ostriches. Great for kids to spend half a day. Option B (culture/red history): visit Murui Mountain Revolutionary Base Memorial Park (about 1 hour by car from the county seat, Zhongrui Town, free or low cost). Known as the "cradle of revolution" in Hainan, it has monuments, a memorial hall, and old camp sites. Suitable for those interested in red history. Afternoon: buy some Ding'an zongzi and Xiangou beef jerky as souvenirs, then take the high-speed train back to Haikou or drive back. 🌤️ Best season Open year-round, but November to April is most comfortable (Hainan’s golden season, not hot or humid); May to October is the rainy and typhoon season, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. The cold spring and Nanli Lake are cooler then, but check the weather before going out. The Dragon Boat Festival period is the busiest time for Ding'an zongzi. The whole county makes zongzi and holds dragon boat races. Food lovers should plan for this time. 💰 Budget reference (for 2 people) Budget: stay in economy hotels or guesthouses in the county seat for about 150–220 yuan per night, about 350 yuan for two nights; meals average 50–80 yuan per person, about 600 yuan for three days; transportation (high-speed train + local taxis) about 200 yuan; tickets (Wenbi Peak + Bird World) about 150 yuan. Total about 1,300 yuan. Comfort: stay in quality guesthouses near Nanli Lake or Wenbi Peak for about 350–500 yuan per night, about 900 yuan for two nights; meals average 100–150 yuan per person, about 1,000 yuan for three days; charter a car for one day about 300 yuan; tickets same as above. Total about 2,400 yuan. ⚠️ Tips to avoid pitfalls Xiangou beef must be freshly cut and grilled: many beef shops line the streets in Xiangou Town. Only those with whole slabs of beef hanging outside, cut and grilled on site, are authentic. Frozen mixed cuts taste much worse. Wenbi Peak is a religious site: dress modestly when climbing, don’t make noise inside the temple, and ask about incense prices in advance to avoid being pressured into donations. Nanli Lake is large, don’t enter blindly: the main scenic area is free, but private fishing and boat rental spots along the lake charge different fees. Ask prices before boarding. Bring double slippers for Jiuwentang cold spring: the spring area has volcanic rocks and shallow water, so barefoot walking can be uncomfortable. Bringing an old pair of slippers is easiest. Murui Mountain is far with few buses: if you don’t drive, arrange a round-trip charter in the county seat in advance. Don’t rely on finding a carpool on site. Ding'an ancient town is free but spread out: Jianlong Tower is in the countryside, not the town center. When navigating, search for "Jianlong Tower" instead of just "Ding'an ancient town" to avoid getting lost. Don’t buy zongzi at scenic spots: the oldest shops and markets in the county seat sell the freshest and cheapest zongzi. Scenic area gift boxes cost twice as much and may not be made the same day. Don’t miss the last high-speed train back to Haikou: the last train from Ding'an Station is usually around 9 PM. Check the schedule if you plan to stay late to avoid rushing. zongzi beef Peak Lake nearby trips travel
Great place to visit due a long layover. It is best to go first thing in the morning when there are no crowds, the heat is bearable, and all of the animals are up and visible, loved the baby hippo's. Then catch the safari ride at 10.30...the highlights were the elephant, the brown bears and the giant panda.
Anonymous userThe accommodation was exceptionally comfortable and clean; attention to detail was evident in the room, with disposable shower gel and shampoo. The room was spacious and offered mountain views. The owners were incredibly hospitable; although there was no elevator, the owner helped carry our luggage up using a lift. There's also a breakfast shop downstairs. It's very close to the E'quan scenic spot.
Anonymous userThe park isn't very large, but it has a good variety of animals, including well-cared-for peacocks and parrots. I visited last year, and the areas damaged and under repair due to a previous typhoon are gradually reopening. It's a good place to bring children; an hour or two isn't tiring.
320***63We came from Sanya for a short trip, bringing the kids along. Haikou doesn't have many interesting attractions, so this place was a good alternative. Having a car made the sightseeing much more comfortable. It was too hot to walk, so the young lady at the entrance recommended the car tour, saying it would be more relaxing. Because of the heat and the kids, she gave our child postcards, which they loved. She also recommended the "Youthful Days" performance and offered a free guided tour, which was alright for the kids. The service was great, very thoughtful! 👍
M2t***b1This attraction isn't overly commercialized. During the off-season, it's a great place to hike and take a walk. There are so many large butterflies, and you can even see geckos crawling on the walls. If you get tired or thirsty, you can buy an iced coconut to drink and rest. It's a great way to connect with nature. It's quite nice!
M23***58There is no commercial development, full of human life. Walking in the streets, the biggest difference between here and other places in Hainan is that the streets are straighter and you won't get lost. There is not much renovation, just stare blankly
肥土豆丝额Jiuwentang Cold Spring is located at the southern end of Ding'an County, Hainan Province. It is a free attraction and the parking fee is 10 yuan. The cold spring water is maintained at around 24 degrees all year round. The cold spring water flows out from volcanic rocks. If you soak your feet in the water, many small fish will swim to bite your feet. The cold spring water is rich in various minerals and is very suitable for making tea.
木易真人I recommend this place to visit, quite quiet and comfortable. For lovers of water procedures, I advise you to take a scrub, a face mask and your own shampoo and hair mask for women to complete all your rituals. If you plan to visit the place in the evening, you need to take food with you, perhaps something light. Tea is free on site.
Alena BudaevaComing to Nanli Lake to see the scenery is really an intoxicating existence, because this place, whether it is the scene of rising glow or the halo of setting sun, will be deeply imprinted in people's impressions.
滇国剑客This guided tour was a fantastic experience! Ms. Shan has a solid foundation of knowledge, and her explanations were vivid and easy to understand. She captivated the children by explaining the historical background and stories behind the artifacts, keeping them engaged and helping them understand and remember many key points. The pacing was excellent throughout, and she provided detailed explanations of the important exhibits. It's perfect for a family trip and highly recommended!
Anonymous userThe standard currency in Ding'an is CNY
Current exchange rate approx.: SGD ≈5.2CNY (actual exchange rates depend on the bank). Currency exchange tips:
1. Exchange currency at your local bank before departure, as rates are usually better than at the destination.
2. You can also withdraw cash from local ATMs.
