Buffalo Moments: Through Travelers' Eyes

Post
Central African Republic 🇨🇫

This country boasts world-class natural beauty, particularly Dzanga-Sangha, known for its forest elephants, Western lowland gorillas, and the Congo Basin rainforest. However, as of 2026, it's not ideal for general leisure trips. The US has classified the entire country as Level 4: Do Not Travel, while the FCDO recommends avoiding all travel outside of Bangui and only allowing visits to Bangui in essential cases.

📅 Suitable Plan — For the future, 6-7 days

Day 1: Bangui
Rest from flights and prepare for onward travel. No need for a packed city itinerary.

Day 2: Bangui → Bayanga 🌿
The park states that Bangui–Bayanga is approximately 500 km away. Driving would take 12-15 hours. A lighter flight would be a more suitable option. Approximately 50 minutes.

Day 3: Dzanga Bai 🐘
Hike into the jungle to see wildlife. The highlight is the gathering of Forest Elephants near the mining area, as well as Buffalo, Sitatunga, and other wildlife.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking 🦍
Spot Western Lowland Gorillas with a small group of trackers. The Gorilla Limo group has been open to tourists since July 2025.

Day 5: Ba’Aka + Forest Walk
Learn about the Ba’Aka community, go hiking, boating, or choose Mangabey Tracking according to the area's program.

Day 6: Wildlife (Reserve 1 day)
It's advisable to allocate an extra day for Dzanga Bai or Gorilla Trekking, as wildlife sightings shouldn't be limited to a single day.

Day 7: Bayanga → Bangui

🏨 Accommodation

If visiting Dzanga-Sangha in the future, the main accommodation is Doli Lodge on the Sangha River in Bayanga, which is the starting point for area activities. It offers food and solar-powered hot water. And internet access.

🍴 Food

The local cuisine emphasizes cassava, river fish, plankton, beans, and peanut sauce. If staying at Doli Lodge, you can request local African dishes.

📌 Tip

Even though Dzanga-Sangha is still open to tourists and Gorilla/Elephant activities are ongoing, it doesn't mean the country as a whole is safe to visit. National travel advisories remain very high in 2026.

If the situation permits, use a tour operator that arranges the entire Bangui → Bayanga → Lodge → Guide package. Avoid renting a car and traveling independently.

Travelers must have a visa, a passport with at least 6 months of validity, and a Yellow Fever Certificate upon entry, as per current regulations.

✨ Summary

Central African Republic has many amazing wildlife attractions, especially:

🐘 Dzanga Bai — Forest Elephants
🦍 Western Lowland Gorillas
🌿 Dzanga-Sangha Rainforest
🛶 Sangha River
🌳 Ba’Aka Culture

However, for 2026, I recommend “saving it for later.” If the situation becomes safe again, then allocate about 6-7 days and focus primarily on the Dzanga-Sangha Rainforest; that will be the most worthwhile experience. 🇨🇫

This trip to New Haven was mainly to reminisce about my journey from Philadelphia northwards through New York, New Haven, Boston, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls when I graduated from university in the United States. Thinking back to the routes and locations from over twenty years ago, even the chairs I sat on, the buildings I passed, and the bus stops I waited at, brought back a flood of memories.
