Neptune’s Grotto (Grotta di Nettuno) is one of the most spectacular marine caves in Europe and the premier natural attraction near Alghero, located at the base of the towering limestone cliffs of Cape Caccia. 🌍 Geology and Discovery · Ancient Origins: Formed millions of years ago within the limestone cliffs, this freshwater-carved cave was rediscovered by local fishermen in the 18th century. · Stunning Formations: The interior acts as a natural cathedral, packed with massive stalactites and stalagmites that have grown just millimeters per century. · LaMarmora Lake: The cave houses one of the largest underground saltwater lakes in Europe, stretching around 120 meters long with crystal-clear reflections. 🧭 How to Get There · By Land (Escala del Cabirol): You can walk down the famous "Goat's Steps"—a breathtaking staircase of 654 steps carved into the sheer cliff face. The return climb requires decent physical fitness. · By Sea (Boat Trip): Tourist boats depart regularly from the Port of Alghero or the nearby town of Fertilia.
