Tilanqiao Prison

Tilanqiao Prison is located at 117 Huade Road, Shanghai (now 147 Changyang Road), an old prison with a history of more than 100 years. It was built in 1901 and opened in May 1903, originally designed in the style of American prisons, initially managed by the British, and then expanded and rebuilt, until 1935 to form the current scale, and used to this day. Due to the excellent construction, large scale, and the number of prisoners in custody, it was once known as the "First Prison in the Far East". In 1895, the cells of the patrol houses in Shanghai's public concessions were overcrowded. In November 1895, Donna McKenzie, the police director of the Ministry of Industry and Bureau, found the board with a sketch and proposed a new prison, with a sketch attached, which cost about 60,000 silver. In 1901, after public tender, the British Agency in Singapore designed the bid, in Baoding Road, Changyang Road, Zhoushan Road, Kunming Road inland block broke ground, covering an area of about 40,000 square meters. Originally, there were two prison houses designed in the style of American prisons, each floor of 60, back-to-back, each row of prison houses with iron gates, built in 1903. After completion, it was named "Shanghai Public Concession Bureau Police Office Prison". Because it is located in the Tilanqiao area, more than 100 years later, Shanghai residents are more used to calling it "Tilanqiao Prison".

In August 1997, it was listed as "Shanghai Anti-Japanese War Memorial Site" by the Shanghai Municipal Government. Tilanqiao Prison has a rich historical connotation and cultural heritage, which not only has important judicial functions, but also has high cultural relics value. In 2013, it was listed by the State Council as the seventh batch of key cultural relics protection units nationwide.
