▲ Hakone Shrine Hakone Shrine boasts a long history, dating back to 757 during the reign of Emperor Koken (the Tenpyo Hoji era of the Nara period). It was founded by the monk Mankan-shonin, who practiced deep meditation on Mount Hakone, and boasts a history spanning over 1,200 years. The peaceful torii gate at Hakone Shrine was built in 1952 to commemorate the signing of the peace treaty between Japan and the Crown Prince. Because it stands on the water, it's also known as the Hakone Shrine Water Torii. The walkway allows for close-up photography, and its stunning photo opportunities often make it a popular Instagram post. The plaque above the torii gate actually has the word "peace," but it can only be seen when facing the water and riding the Lake Ashi pirate ship. Keep an eye out for it!
