Baotong Temple - A splendid prayer sanctuary hidden in the bustling city
🍁 Baotong Zen Temple is known as the first Buddhist site in the Three Chus and is the oldest existing temple in Wuhan, founded during the Southern Dynasties Liu Song period (420-479 AD), originally named Chushan Temple.
🍁 Baotong Zen Temple is referred to as Wuhan's 'Mini Forbidden City'. Its classical architecture features yellow walls with red tiles, flying eaves and upturned corners, pavilions, and towers, all dazzlingly colorful. The extensive bright yellow walls are just too beautiful!
🍁 The architectural style here is fantastic, with the Shengseng Bridge, the Mahavira Hall, the Jade Buddha Hall, and various other buildings constructed along the mountain in a well-arranged and colorful manner. With the grandeur derived from the Tang Dynasty's royal family, it is indeed extraordinary. Hidden in the hustle and bustle of Wuhan, it's a place of tranquility where time seems to pass more slowly!

Baotong Temple in Wuhan, the most competitive royal temple for photography
Once upon a time, I have visited Baotong Temple several times, and the only impression it left me was that each hall is a scene, unlike the cramped flatness of Guiyuan Temple, especially with its back against Hongshan, with its undulating layout. Today, I visited again with friends, and the scenery remains the same, only the broken branches and withered leaves on the back mountain are still recounting the previous freezing rain and snow damage. The pagoda is now locked, and it's no longer possible to climb up for a view for just two yuan as before.
📜 About Baotong Temple
Baotong Temple, the only royal temple in Wuhan, is the largest in scale and the most magnificent in halls, ranking first among the temples in Wuchang. Originally the Dahongshan Temple in Suizhou, during the Duanping period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1234-1236), Meng Gong, the administrator of Jinghu, in order to prevent the invasion of the Jin troops from the south, submitted a request to Emperor Lizong to issue a decree with gold, ordering the relocation of Dahongshan Temple to this location, and the mountain was renamed Hongshan.
During the Yuan Dynasty (1280-1291), to commemorate Master Ciren, the Baotong Pagoda was built over eleven years, originally named Lingji Pagoda, and later renamed Hongshan Baotong Pagoda because it was built on Hongshan. The pagoda has 7 levels and is majestic and spectacular.

Don't miss the best viewing period of the century-old ginkgo in Wuhan, which only comes once a year
Although most of the ginkgo trees in Wuhan had already entered their best viewing period half a month ago, this century-old ginkgo tree in Baotong Temple still maintains its vibrant green. At that time, I joked with my friends that it was indeed a tribute to the incense, and its vitality was stronger than others. Unexpectedly, it entered the best viewing period in a blink of an eye. Take advantage of this weekend to come and check in!
Location: In front of the Daxiong Hall of Baotong Temple in Wuchang
Ticket: 10 yuan
Opening hours: 8:00-16:00 for entering the temple, clearing at 18:00.
Tour suggestions:
Baotong Temple is not big, if you are not taking pictures, the whole tour takes less than two hours, but now the ginkgo is yellow, under the red wall, gray tiles and Buddha Hall, it is really beautiful, it is a pity not to take pictures.
Mountain Gate-Maitreya Hall-Daxiong Hall-Jade Buddha Hall-Pagoda
Mountain Gate: Baotong Temple is a typical quiet place in the bustling city. The temple gate is right across from Wushang Dream Age. The two stone lions in front of the door are very majestic, the main door is usually not open, you can take a tourist photo here.
Maitreya Hall: There are many pigeons in front of the Maitreya Hall, there are two connected release pools, eating sugar paper on a bridge, it is very good to take pictures on it. The color of the Maitreya Hall wall on the left side of the Prajna Gate and the right side of the Non-Dual Gate are all very good places to take pictures.
Daxiong Hall: After passing through the Maitreya Hall, it is the Daxiong Hall. The century-old ginkgo is located on the left side of the main hall. Whether it is looking up at the main hall and ginkgo from behind the Maitreya Hall or looking back from the main hall, it is very amazing. This is also the place where most people take pictures and check in.
Jade Buddha Hall: After passing through the Daxiong Hall, it is the Jade Buddha Hall. This courtyard is relatively quiet, with no vegetation.
Hongshan Pagoda: After passing through the Jade Buddha Hall, go up the steps and go straight ahead to the Baotong Temple Pagoda. Along the way, you will pass the Hongshan Chinese Cabbage Seedling Base, but you can only look at it, and you cannot enter the whole process of monitoring. The Hongshan Pagoda used to be able to climb the tower for 2 yuan, but now it is under protection and cannot go up.
In addition, if there are too many people in front of the Daxiong Hall when you enter Baotong Temple, there will be fewer and fewer after four o'clock, and you can take some more photos at this time.
There are no shops in the temple, remember to bring water.

The ginkgo trees at Baotong Temple, also known as the 'Little Forbidden City' in Wuhan, are at their best viewing period
Every year at this time, people visit Baotong Temple to see the century-old ginkgo trees. The golden leaves paired with the yellow walls and red doors are simply too beautiful. Netizens say this is the Wuhan version of the 'Little Forbidden City'.
In the cold winter, the ginkgo seems to be particularly delicate, with golden ginkgo leaves dancing, becoming a bright landscape in winter. The winter ginkgo at Baotong Temple in Wuhan is at its best viewing period, don't miss it~
A century-old ginkgo tree in the temple has turned yellow. Compared with other century-old ginkgo trees in Wuhan, the century-old ginkgo tree in Baotong Temple is the last one in Wuhan to turn yellow. You can get there from the C and D exits of Baotong Temple Station on Wuhan Metro Line 2.

Moving on a metro
Taking the metro in China ( Wuhan ) is way more easter, faster and a cheaper option. Traffic is so bad out there that I find a certain level of piece on the metro. It's cool, calm and collecting.
