We took a private tour to two Outlander castles, Midhope and Blackness, to make the most of our time, and it was absolutely perfect! Overall, it was an amazing, comfortable experience that took us straight to the places we wanted, allowing us to truly make the most of our day. Edinburgh is one of those cities where you can spend days wandering cobbled streets, discovering hidden corners and getting lost in history. But if you have a car and a free day, I’d seriously recommend leaving the city behind. Within an hour or so, the landscape changes completely. Suddenly there are dramatic cliffs, ruined castles, enormous sculptures and peaceful lochs waiting beyond the city. Here are five places I’d put on the road-trip list. 1. St Abb’s Head Start with the wild coast. St Abb’s Head feels like Scotland turned the drama up to maximum. Huge cliffs drop towards the sea, seabirds fill the skies and walking trails wind across the rugged headland. On a clear day, the water can look almost impossibly blue. Take your time here. Walk towards the lighthouse, breathe in the sea air and find a viewpoint where you can simply watch the waves crashing below. It’s the kind of landscape that makes you feel very small. 2. Blackness Castle Then head towards the Firth of Forth. Blackness Castle sits dramatically on the shoreline, its thick stone walls and towers giving it the appearance of a medieval warship pointing into the water. It’s easy to see why it has become one of Scotland’s most atmospheric castles. Walk through the old rooms, climb the towers and look out across the Forth. History feels particularly close here. 3. The Kelpies Then comes something completely different. The Kelpies are enormous steel horse-head sculptures rising dramatically above the surrounding landscape. They are genuinely huge. Seeing them in person is completely different from seeing a photograph, especially around sunset when the changing light catches the steel. Stay until evening if you can. The sculptures illuminated against the darkening sky are spectacular. 4. Tantallon Castle Next, head back towards the coast. Tantallon Castle is the kind of ruin that looks like it was designed specifically for a movie. The remains sit dramatically on the edge of the cliffs, with Bass Rock rising from the sea directly offshore. Walk along the old walls, look through the ruined windows and imagine what life must have been like here centuries ago. The view alone is worth the journey. 5. Linlithgow Palace Finish somewhere quieter. Linlithgow Palace sits beside the beautiful waters of Linlithgow Loch, surrounded by green countryside. The palace is now an atmospheric ruin, but its scale gives you a real sense of how impressive it must once have been. Walk through the old halls, climb as high as you can and look across the loch. It’s peaceful, historic and wonderfully photogenic. And that’s the thing about travelling around Edinburgh. You don’t need to drive for hours to find extraordinary places. We went on a mystery day trip, with our first stop being Linlithgow and the second stop Anstruther. Both were new places for us to explore. The driver was friendly and kept us well updated about the plans (except for the destinations, of course, as it was a mystery!). Although we didn't go inside the castle, the outside was totally worth snapping away! I also bought a gorgeous cashmere shawl at a nearby souvenir shop—a perfect little treat for myself🙆‍♀️. · Lunch: Grassmarket—Dunedin Kitchen (Grassmarket, Edinburgh EH1 2HS)🥪 The restaurant has a chill vibe, but personally, I thought the food was just okay~ The burger was a bit dry, and the fish and chips were pretty average, nothing spectacular. Still, it was nice and comfy to sit down and take a break, so no harm done. · Afternoon: A Leisurely Stroll in New Town (George Street, Edinburgh) We soaked in a completely different urban architectural vibe. The street is super photogenic, and any random shot looks incredibly stylish📸! · Afternoon Tea: Waverley Cafe (Waverley Mall, 3 Waverley Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1BQ)☕ We took our time enjoying a cup of coffee and had a pleasant surprise: beautiful dark green cups and saucers + a turquoise plate serving warm, fresh-baked English scones with Rodda's clotted cream and jam. It was seriously so delicious😋! The setup was exquisite for photos, plus the authentic British flair made me so glad we didn't miss it~ Day 3: A Half-Day Tour of a Historic Palace · Linlithgow, West Lothian Our destination was Linlithgow Palace (Linlithgow, EH49 7AL). The palace itself already has a very medieval cinematic feel to it, and we happened to stumble upon the super rare, once-a-year Linlithgow Palace Jousting🏇🏻! The scene was absolutely stunning, with everyone dressed in Victorian-era costumes—it felt so surreal~ The atmosphere was totally ON FIRE🔥, as if the entire population of Edinburgh had relocated there to have fun. I have to mention the pizza we bought from a small stall inside; it was surprisingly incredible! Edinburgh's classic British weather truly changes in the blink of an eye: a sudden drizzle, and then the sun comes out the next minute. The castle enveloped in a light drizzle looked even more romantic and atmospheric☔. Even in summer, the temperature isn't hot at all, making it exceptionally comfortable for walking around! A special little episode: When we were finally getting ready to catch our connecting flight to London, Edinburgh Airport (Edinburgh Airport, EH12 9DN) felt quite small, and a lot of things were a bit of a hassle. People were moving at a rather slow pace, and we barely made it to the boarding gate with just half an hour to spare. It was definitely a bit nerve-wracking😅! Conclusion Slow travel in Edinburgh is truly about "enjoying" the world~ Castles, roads, old British streets, souvenir shops, and the aroma of coffee—it's super perfect for family trips, girls' getaways, or checking in on social media! If I come back next time, I'll definitely leave more time to savor it all slowly~💕

Linlithgow Palace was an amazing place to visit. It was like stepping back in history. Even though the castle was in ruins, we could explore the castle by ourselves and immerse ourselves in the place where Queen Mary of Scots was born. This was definitely hard to forget as she was such an important to the development of both Scotland and England’s history . The castle was big and beautiful. Definitely recommend it to other visitors.

Lovely afternoon spent wandering Linlithgow palace. There are a number of towers to climb for amazing views across the Loch. One of the floors has artefacts of items found within the palace over the years. Very well maintained and fascinating to learn a bit of Scottish history. Linlithgow itself is a pretty place to visit with lots of choices for lunch or dinner.

#Get a discount without relying on luck. Come to walk in the park in Linlisco. When you come here, you must eat ice cream at Mac's. The ice cream tastes delicious, not too sweet and the price is very reasonable. I think I bought it for 2 pounds. The weather is a bit cold, but we eat ice cream everywhere. It's like regaining energy. In addition to the delicious ice cream shop, you can also feed the seagulls around this pond. After feeding them, we walked around the pond. It took about 1 hour because it's wide. In conclusion, it's a cute place. I recommend coming.

If you want to pay for parking, it is near Kelpie. Parking costs around £4. If you are not comfortable walking, you can park your car nearby. When you reach the horse-shaped landmark, there is a playground for children to enjoy. There are also about 3-4 food trucks, such as ice cream shops, burger shops, and dessert shops. There is also a souvenir shop with free toilets. The toilets here are all clean. If anyone is looking for a check-in point for taking pictures, I recommend this place.
