I’ve eaten pork dishes in Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia, and honestly, I’ve never come across this exact 2-in-1 style anywhere else in my travels. That’s what makes Trang roasted pork so interesting to me. The first bite already surprised me. Look at that skin — SO CRUNCHY! But the real surprise is underneath. This isn’t just ordinary roasted pork. The bottom layer is actually BBQ-style pork, marinated more like char siu! So basically, you’re getting 2-in-1 pork — roasted pork + char siu in one piece! And there’s another thing we noticed. The pork here is not super fatty. It is slimmer, leaner and meatier compared with the very fatty roasted pork we usually get. The char siu layer is also different from the soft, melt-in-your-mouth type loaded with fat. For me, it reminds me of the traditional red-coloured char siu we used to get with wantan mee in Penang — more lean meat, more bite, and much less fat. Because the pork is leaner, the roasted pork itself is also a little firmer and harder to chew. But honestly? I LIKE IT! Maybe because I’m a meat lover, I really enjoyed this first-time experience. It’s not just about having super-soft pork or lots of fat. I like the texture, the flavour and the unusual combination. And I kept thinking… Have you ever eaten roasted pork and char siu together like this? This is exactly why I love travelling. You think you already know a dish, then you arrive in a smaller town like Trang and suddenly discover a version you’ve never tasted before. 💰 Price: Very affordable. Our small pack cost around 200 baht. So if you’re coming to Trang and you LOVE pork, please don’t miss this. Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines or Indonesia — I haven’t come across this exact style in my travels. For me, this is one of Trang’s food discoveries that deserves attention. Got off the plane yesterday ✈️ and it took a 5-hour drive to reach the hotel. I was woken up by the call to prayer at 4:00 AM, but seeing this scenery instantly healed me with nature's beauty. Photos 1–4: Tumpak Sewu Waterfall; 6–9: Semeru volcano town ⚠️1️⃣ You will definitely get wet at Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. You can bring a change of clothes and change in the restroom after you come out (restroom fee: IDR 5,000 per person). 2️⃣ I don't recommend wearing flip-flops; it's too dangerous ‼️ The stairs you need to climb are very steep, and the path below is also very slippery. 3️⃣ Remember to wear a jacket when you get up in the morning to go to the volcano town; it's only around 20°C here in the morning.

A little expensive, but I’d do it again. 💙 Oneeighty° Bali costs IDR 700K per person, and I know that sounds like a lot for a pool day. But IDR 600K is redeemable for food and drinks, and you get around 4 hours to enjoy the place. So instead of paying IDR 700K just to get in, you can spend most of it on lunch, drinks, and enjoying the pool. The view is honestly the best part — that glass-bottom pool hanging over the cliff with the ocean right in front of you. 🌊 Would I recommend it? Definitely. Especially if you want to splurge a little and make your Bali trip extra memorable.

SAVE THIS POST FOR YOUR NUSA PENIDA TRIP 📌 If there’s one destination in Bali that activates several sides of my travel personality at once, it’s Nusa Penida. 🌿 The Nature Seeker wants the cliffs, beaches and turquoise water. 🎒 The Explorer wants to see what’s around the next corner. 📸 The Photographer wants to stop approximately every five minutes. 😎 And The Planner? She quickly realizes that Nusa Penida is NOT the island where you should arrive without understanding the logistics. 😄 So instead of just showing you beautiful photos, here’s the post I wish everyone saved before going: 🇮🇩 NUSA PENIDA: WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED TO KNOW First things first: Nusa Penida is much bigger than it looks on Instagram. You cannot realistically jump between every famous viewpoint, beach and snorkeling spot in a few hours without spending a huge part of your day in transit. The secret to enjoying Penida is not trying to see everything. It’s choosing the right combination of places. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🚤 1. HOW TO GET TO NUSA PENIDA Most travelers visit from Bali by fast boat. One of the most common departure points is Sanur, with boats taking you across the Badung Strait to Nusa Penida. 💡 PLANNER TIP: Don’t think only about the boat departure time. Factor in: · getting to the harbour · check-in · waiting · boarding · luggage · getting from the arrival port to your first stop · enough buffer before your return boat A “30–45 minute boat ride” can easily occupy a much larger part of your morning. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🗺️ 2. THE BIGGEST NUSA PENIDA MISTAKE: TRYING TO DO EAST + WEST IN ONE DAY This is probably the most important thing to understand. Many of Nusa Penida’s famous attractions are concentrated around two different sightseeing areas. 🌊 WEST NUSA PENIDA 🦖 Kelingking Beach Probably THE iconic Nusa Penida view — the famous T-Rex-shaped coastline. 💎 Crystal Bay Popular for swimming, sunsets and snorkeling/diving. 🌊 Broken Beach A spectacular natural rock arch surrounding a circular cove. 💦 Angel’s Billabong A natural infinity-pool-like formation beside the ocean. 🌅 EAST NUSA PENIDA 💎 Diamond Beach One of the most spectacular beaches on the island. 🌴 Atuh Beach A beautiful bay surrounded by dramatic cliffs and rock formations. 🏡 Rumah Pohon Tree House / Thousand Islands Viewpoint area Famous for panoramic coastal views. 💡 MY ADVICE: If you only have ONE DAY, choose East OR West. Trying to properly experience both can turn your dream island day into: car → photo → car → photo → car → panic about the boat. 😅 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⏰ 3. IF YOU ONLY HAVE ONE DAY My ideal structure would be: EARLY MORNING 🚤 Fast boat from Bali MORNING 🎒 Start your chosen East or West route LUNCH 🍽️ Proper food + hydration break AFTERNOON 🌿 Continue exploring without trying to add ten extra stops BEFORE THE BOAT 💦 Relax somewhere near the harbour LATE AFTERNOON / EVENING 🚤 Return to Bali The most important word here is: BUFFER. Do not plan your final viewpoint so tightly that you spend the drive back wondering whether you’re about to miss your boat. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🛵 4. SCOOTER OR DRIVER? This is one place where I wouldn’t automatically assume renting a scooter is the best option just because you ride one elsewhere in Bali. Nusa Penida has improved considerably, but you can still encounter narrow, steep and uneven roads. If you’re not a very confident rider, hire a driver. You’ll also spend less mental energy navigating and more time actually looking at the island. For a group of two or more people, a private car can make even more sense. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🤿 5. DON’T FORGET THE WORLD UNDER THE WATER Nusa Penida isn’t only about those famous cliff photos. It’s also one of Bali’s major snorkeling and diving destinations. Common snorkeling areas include: 🐠 Crystal Bay 🌊 Gamat Bay 💙 Toyapakeh 🐟 SD Point 🌊 Manta Point / Manta Bay areas And yes — manta rays are one of the biggest reasons people come here. But please remember: Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Choose responsible operators, keep your distance from marine animals and never treat wildlife encounters like an attraction that owes you a photograph. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🐟 6. AND THEN THERE’S MOLA MOLA If you’re visiting during the cooler-water season, roughly July–October, Nusa Penida is also famous among divers for encounters with the extraordinary ocean sunfish — mola mola. They’re enormous, bizarre-looking and absolutely fascinating. But this is primarily a diving experience, not something I would plan a casual snorkeling trip around. Currents around Nusa Penida can also be very strong, so choose reputable dive operators and be realistic about your experience level. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌊 7. BEAUTIFUL WATER DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN SAFE WATER This deserves its own section. Nusa Penida’s coastline can look impossibly inviting from above while conditions below are very different. Strong currents, waves and changing tides are part of this environment. ⚠️ Never assume a beach is safe for swimming simply because other tourists are standing near the water. Pay attention to local warnings and conditions that day. And if the ocean looks rough? The photo is enough. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 👟 8. WHAT TO WEAR This isn’t the day I’d choose purely aesthetic vacation shoes. 😄 Bring: 👟 comfortable shoes with grip 🧢 hat 🕶️ sunglasses 🧴 sunscreen 👙 swimsuit 👕 something light to cover your shoulders 💧 plenty of water If you’re planning to descend toward beaches, remember: going down is the easy part. You still have to climb back up. In tropical heat. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💵 9. BRING SOME CASH Don’t rely completely on cards. Cash can be useful for: · small entrance fees · parking · local warungs · drinks/snacks · small purchases · unexpected expenses And keep smaller denominations with you. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💦 10. MY FAVORITE LOGISTICS HACK: SAVE YOUR RELAXING STOP FOR THE PORT AREA This is one of those little decisions that can make a day much easier. Instead of finishing sightseeing early and then sitting around waiting for your boat, plan your final meal/drink/swim close to the harbour. We used Maruti Beach Club, which is within walking distance of the port area. That means: 🌴 pool 🍽️ food 🥤 drinks 💦 shower/refreshing break depending on available facilities ⚓ harbour nearby …instead of spending that final chunk of time simply waiting around. Just leave enough time to walk back and complete boarding procedures comfortably. This is exactly the kind of tiny logistics detail my Planner personality LOVES. 😄 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌙 11. SHOULD YOU STAY OVERNIGHT? If your schedule allows it: YES. A day trip gives you a taste of Nusa Penida. Staying overnight gives you much more freedom. You can visit famous viewpoints earlier or later than the biggest day-trip crowds, explore at a slower pace and potentially divide East and West between different days. My ideal first trip? 2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT minimum. DAY 1: West Penida + sunset DAY 2: East Penida + return boat Add another day if snorkeling/diving is important to you. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📸 12. THE INSTAGRAM VS REALITY RULE Nusa Penida is breathtaking. But many of the photographs you’ve seen online hide: 🚗 driving time ☀️ heat 👥 crowds 🪜 stairs ⏳ queues 🥵 climbs back up 🌊 unpredictable ocean conditions None of this makes Penida less worth visiting. It simply means: come prepared for an adventure, not a photoshoot. And ironically, you’ll probably enjoy the photos much more. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ❤️ MY FINAL VERDICT Is Nusa Penida worth it? Absolutely. But I wouldn’t treat it as another Bali attraction to tick off. Give it time. Choose fewer places. Respect the ocean. Leave room for delays. Stop for food. Drink water. Put the camera down occasionally. And if possible, stay overnight. 4-Day Journey Through History, Culture & Volcanoes When I started planning my Indonesia journey, Bali was the name everyone mentioned first. But sometimes, the most unforgettable experiences are found when we choose a different path. Instead of following the usual route, I discovered Surabaya, a city of heroes, hidden heritage, diverse cultures, and the gateway to one of Indonesia’s most breathtaking landscapes, Mount Bromo. This 4-day journey showed me that Indonesia is not only about famous islands. Beyond Bali, there are stories waiting to be discovered. 🇮🇩 Day 1 — Discovering the Soul of Surabaya: The City of Heroes My first day began by exploring the historical heart of Surabaya. 🏛️ Tugu Pahlawan & November 10th Museum Surabaya is known as the “City of Heroes”, and this monument represents the courage and spirit behind that name. Walking around this area, I could feel how deeply history is connected with the city’s identity. 🚢 Monumen Kapal Selam (Monkasel) A unique attraction where visitors can explore an actual submarine in the middle of the city. It was a surprising experience and a reminder of Indonesia’s maritime history. 🌃 Tunjungan Street As the day ended, Tunjungan Street became the perfect place to experience Surabaya’s modern side. The lights, local atmosphere, and street scenes created a completely different feeling from the historical sites. 🇮🇩 Day 2 — Heritage, Culture & Coastal Beauty The second day was about discovering Surabaya’s diversity. 🏛️ House of Sampoerna A beautiful colonial-era building that tells the story of Surabaya’s heritage. Its architecture, museum experience, and unique atmosphere make it one of the city’s most memorable places. 🛕 Sanggar Agung Temple (Klenteng Sanggar Agung) Located near the coast, this temple shows the cultural diversity of Surabaya. The combination of traditional architecture and seaside views makes it a special photography spot. 🌉 Suramadu Bridge Ending the day at Suramadu Bridge was the perfect choice. Watching the bridge during sunset or under the night lights was one of the most beautiful moments of the journey. 🇮🇩 Day 3 — The Legendary Sunrise of Mount Bromo The highlight of this journey began before sunrise. Leaving early from Surabaya, I headed toward Mount Bromo, one of Indonesia’s most iconic natural wonders. Standing above the clouds and watching the first sunlight touch the volcanic landscape was a moment I will never forget. Mount Bromo was not just a destination. It was an experience. After exploring Bromo, continuing to Malang instead of returning to Surabaya made the journey smoother and more comfortable. 🇮🇩 Day 4 — A Relaxing Escape to Malang & Batu After the adventure of Bromo, Malang and Batu offered a peaceful ending. 🌿 Malang A charming city with cool weather, colonial architecture, and a relaxing atmosphere. 🏔️ Batu A beautiful mountain area near Malang, perfect for enjoying nature, cafes, and a slower travel pace. It was the perfect way to complete this East Java adventure. I came looking for a different side of Indonesia, and Surabaya gave me exactly that. History, culture, local life, volcanoes, and mountain escapes, all connected in one unforgettable journey. Bali is a spectacular island with so many places that take your breath away: lush jungles and waterfalls, volcanoes and the ocean, endless rice terraces and magical temples. Sometimes it feels like you want to see everything at once. But there is one thing to keep in mind: getting around Bali is not always quick. The roads can be narrow, winding and busy, so even a relatively short distance can take quite a while. That is exactly why we chose Homm Saranam Baturiti, a beautiful hotel in the mountains, almost in the centre of the island. It takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to get here from the airport, but once you arrive, you discover a completely different side of Bali — green, peaceful and wonderfully quiet. The hotel is surrounded by jungle and rice terraces, and its large, multi-level grounds blend beautifully into the natural landscape. What I loved most was the feeling of space and privacy. You can wake up surrounded by greenery, take a leisurely walk around the property, admire the terraces and simply enjoy the silence. At the same time, the hotel offers everything you need for a comfortable stay, including an elevator, a beautiful swimming pool and two restaurants. The staff deserve a special mention too. Everyone was warm, friendly and attentive, which made our stay even more enjoyable. These little details create that wonderful feeling of being genuinely welcomed rather than simply staying at a beautiful hotel. For us, Homm Saranam was the perfect base for discovering the mountain side of Bali. There was no need to rush anywhere. We could simply slow down, breathe in the fresh mountain air and enjoy the nature surrounding us. From Bali, we travelled to Nusa Penida on a local fast boat. We wanted more than just to get to the island — we wanted to experience a little of the local way of life and see how people travel between the islands. The journey took less than an hour, and soon a completely different world appeared before us. And then the magic began! Turquoise water, white sandy beaches, towering cliffs rising from the sea, and breathtaking landscapes that make you want to stop and take it all in. There are hundreds of cafés in Canggu, but DISISI Cafe turned out to be one of those small places I genuinely liked. The interior immediately caught my attention: a huge thatched ceiling, rattan lamps, wooden furniture, tropical plants and walls covered with old photographs of Bali. It’s simple, cozy and feels much more personal than many of the polished cafés around Canggu. And then came the prices. A small Bintang was 35K IDR, a large Bintang 55K, and the chicken katsu curry with rice was 65K. We also ordered a whole duck served with vegetables for 98K. For this part of Bali, I thought the prices were very reasonable. The food was good, portions were proper, and the waitress was incredibly sweet and friendly. Bali is just the beginning: the 10 day route I’d actually do 🇮🇩✨ Just walking through Bali, you might think you’ve already seen the best of Indonesia. Then you look a little further east and realise there are tiny islands, turquoise water, manta rays, quiet beaches and entire stretches of coastline where the pace feels completely different. Because here’s the thing… Bali is incredible, but if you have around 10 days, I personally wouldn’t spend the entire trip changing hotels every two nights or sitting in traffic just to tick off another famous café or viewpoint. I’d use Bali as the beginning of the trip, then head out to the islands. The route I’d build is: 🌴 2 nights Bali 🏝️ 3 nights Nusa Lembongan 🌉 Nusa Ceningan day trip 🐠 Nusa Penida day trip 🌊 5 nights Lombok And the biggest trick is actually keeping the itinerary simple. Instead of treating every island as a separate hotel stop, make Nusa Lembongan your base for the Nusas. That one decision can make the trip feel so much easier. Lembongan has enough beaches, cafés, viewpoints and little roads to explore without feeling like you need to constantly pack your bag. From there, Nusa Ceningan is connected by the famous Yellow Bridge, so you can simply cross over and spend the day exploring another island without moving accommodation. Then there’s Nusa Penida. Penida is much bigger and can feel more hectic than Lembongan, but it is worth adding if you want dramatic cliffs, huge ocean views and the chance to see manta rays. Rather than spending another night packing and unpacking, you can make Penida a day trip from your Lembongan base. That’s the part of this itinerary I really like. You get the experience of visiting multiple islands without turning the entire holiday into a luggage transfer operation. 😂 And then comes the part I would give the most time to: Lombok. 🌊 Why Lombok gets 5 nights Lombok is where I’d intentionally slow down. Instead of trying to visit five different destinations in five days, base yourself around Kuta Lombok and use it as your starting point for exploring the south. You’ll have access to beaches such as Tanjung Aan, Mawun and Selong Belanak, plus surf spots around Gerupuk and plenty of smaller beaches and viewpoints to discover along the way. And this is where the trip starts feeling different from Bali. The roads open up. The landscape feels more spacious. You can ride for a while without immediately running into another huge cluster of cafés, shops and traffic. Some beaches can still be busy, especially at popular times, but compared with the most developed parts of Bali, the overall rhythm can feel much slower. That is exactly why I wouldn’t rush through Lombok. One of the easiest mistakes with an itinerary like this is trying to squeeze everything in because the map makes the islands look close. Indonesia looks deceptively compact. A place might look like it is “just over there,” but boats, road conditions, weather, transfers and check-in times can turn a simple move into half a day. So instead of asking, “How many places can I visit?” I’d ask: “Where do I actually want to wake up?” For this route, I’d rather wake up five times in Lombok than spend those days checking out, travelling, checking in and repeating the process. 🌴 HOW I’D STRUCTURE THE 10 DAYS DAY 1: ARRIVE IN BALI Keep the first day easy. Depending on your arrival time, choose one Bali base and stay there rather than trying to cross the island immediately. For beaches and sunsets, Uluwatu is a great base. For culture, rice terraces and a greener atmosphere, choose Ubud. For cafés, restaurants, nightlife and a more social atmosphere, Canggu is an option. You really don’t need to see every corner of Bali on this trip. Pick one area that matches your vibe and actually enjoy it. DAY 2: BALI Give yourself a proper Bali day. Go to the beach, explore nearby temples or viewpoints, have a long lunch and watch the sunset. This is not the trip where you need a 6 AM sunrise, seven attractions and a 10 PM dinner every single day. Leave some breathing room. DAY 3: BALI → NUSA LEMBONGAN Take a fast boat from Bali to Nusa Lembongan. Once you arrive, check in, drop your bags and start exploring. Depending on your arrival time, keep the afternoon relaxed with a beach stop, sunset viewpoint or casual dinner. And pack light. Seriously. Carrying a giant suitcase onto a boat, across a pier and through island roads is one of those travel experiences that sounds fine until you’re actually doing it. 😭 A backpack or smaller luggage is much easier. DAY 4: NUSA LEMBONGAN + CENINGAN This is your island exploration day. Cross the Yellow Bridge into Nusa Ceningan and spend the day moving slowly between viewpoints, cafés, beaches and coastal roads. You don’t need another hotel. You don’t need another check-in. You don’t need to make it complicated. The whole point is being able to wake up in Lembongan and explore Ceningan for the day before coming back to the same room. That makes the itinerary much more enjoyable. DAY 5: NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP Use another day for Nusa Penida. If manta ray snorkelling is high on your list, this is the day to plan around. You can combine the snorkelling with a small number of land stops rather than trying to see the entire island in one day. And that part is important. Penida is not tiny. Roads and travel times can make ambitious day-trip itineraries much longer than they look on a map. Pick one area or a couple of highlights and enjoy them. You don’t need 14 photos from every viewpoint to prove you visited. DAY 6: NUSA LEMBONGAN → LOMBOK Now move east. This is where the itinerary starts changing pace. Instead of returning to Bali, look at boat connections that allow you to continue towards Lombok, depending on the season and current schedules. Build some flexibility into this day because sea conditions can affect island transfers. Once you’re in Lombok, settle into your base around Kuta and keep the evening simple. Dinner. Walk around. Maybe find a little warung. Sleep. That’s enough. DAY 7: TANJUNG AAN + SOUTH LOMBOK Start exploring the beaches around Kuta Lombok. Tanjung Aan is an easy addition to a south Lombok beach day, and you can combine it with other nearby stops rather than treating every beach as a separate excursion. This is where renting a scooter can make the area feel much more open, assuming you’re properly licensed and comfortable riding. If you’re not confident on a scooter, arrange a driver instead. The goal is exploring, not proving anything. 😂 DAY 8: MAWUN + SELONG BELANAK Make this another slower beach day. Mawun has the kind of setting that makes you want to stay longer than planned. Selong Belanak is also worth adding, particularly if you’re interested in surfing or simply want another beautiful stretch of coastline. Don’t be afraid to spend several hours in one place. A good travel day doesn’t have to mean visiting six locations. Sometimes the best part is ordering something cold, sitting by the beach and realising you haven’t checked the time in three hours. DAY 9: GERUPUK + A SLOW LOMBOK DAY Use your final full day based on your interests. If you surf, Gerupuk can be a major reason to be in this part of Lombok. If you don’t surf, use the day for another beach, viewpoint, café or a longer ride through the surrounding countryside. You could also use this as your buffer day. If weather or boat delays affected an earlier part of the itinerary, having one flexible day can save the trip from becoming stressful. DAY 10: LOMBOK + DEPARTURE Keep your final day simple and leave enough time for your transfer. If you’re flying out of Lombok, plan your route around the airport rather than squeezing in one last faraway beach. If you’re continuing somewhere else, use the same principle. The last day should be about getting there comfortably, not winning an imaginary “most places visited” competition. 😂 ✨ THE BALI + BEYOND TIPS I’D ACTUALLY USE 📍 Pick ONE Bali base Uluwatu for beaches and sunsets. Ubud for culture and greenery. Canggu for cafés, restaurants and nightlife. Trying to sleep in three different parts of Bali before even reaching the islands defeats the point of this itinerary. 🏝️ Make Lembongan your Nusa base You can explore Lembongan and Ceningan without changing hotels, then use a separate day for Penida. That means fewer check-outs and more actual holiday time. 🌉 Ceningan does not need another hotel The Yellow Bridge connects Lembongan and Ceningan, making it easy to treat them as one part of your itinerary. 🎒 Pack lighter than you think Island transfers are much easier with a backpack or small bag. Then choose one or two land stops that make sense geographically. Trying to photograph every famous Penida viewpoint in one day can turn an island adventure into a race against traffic. 🛵 Scooter only if you’re properly prepared A scooter gives you freedom around the islands, but it isn’t automatically the right choice for everyone. Make sure you’re legally allowed to ride, have the appropriate licence, wear a helmet and only ride if you’re genuinely comfortable. 🌊 Give Lombok the biggest chunk This is probably the biggest change I’d make compared with a typical Bali itinerary. Instead of constantly moving east and west, give yourself several nights in one Lombok base. You can still explore a lot without waking up in a different hotel every morning. 🍜 Leave empty space in the itinerary Some of my favourite travel moments aren’t the famous attractions. They’re the random warung. The tiny roadside café. The beach we didn’t originally plan to visit. The sunset that wasn’t on the itinerary. The road where we suddenly decided to stop because the view looked too good to ignore. That’s why I wouldn’t schedule every hour of this trip. In reality, it is the world’s largest volcanic lake, formed within the caldera left behind by an enormous ancient eruption. At its heart lies Samosir Island, a place where dramatic scenery meets the history and culture of the Batak Toba people. For me, the journey did not begin when I first saw the lake. It began after landing in Medan and boarding the bus that would take me towards it. The flight from Kuala Lumpur to Medan took around an hour, but reaching Lake Toba required another four hours on the road and a final boat ride. It was a long travel day, yet the moment the lake appeared between the mountains, the tiredness seemed to fade. Lake Toba is not a place to explore with a crowded checklist. Its beauty reveals itself when you slow down. That was why I gave this journey five days and four nights, with a scooter and enough free time to enjoy Samosir at its own pace. 📍 Day 1: Kuala Lumpur to Lake Toba via Medan After arriving at Medan’s Kualanamu Airport, I left the city for later and travelled directly towards Lake Toba. I took a DAMRI bus to the lakeside ferry area. The journey took around four hours, and the fare was approximately IDR 75,000 when I travelled. Outside the window, the busy city gradually disappeared. Plantations, small villages and green hills began to replace the traffic. I had not reached the lake yet, but the journey already felt like it had begun. From the lakeside port, I continued to Samosir Island by local boat. The crossing took around an hour and cost approximately IDR 25,000. Once we were out on the water, the noise of the road vanished. All that remained was the cool breeze, the wide lake and layers of mountains in the distance. I did not plan any sightseeing after reaching Tuk Tuk. After such a long journey, checking in, taking a short walk and enjoying my first quiet evening beside Lake Toba felt like more than enough. 🏡 Where I Stayed I stayed at Tuk Tuk Timbul Bungalows, which can be found on Trip.com. It is set in a quieter part of the Tuk Tuk area, with a peaceful garden setting and views towards Lake Toba. Despite its name, the property is not made up entirely of wooden bungalows. It also has regular rooms and options suitable for families. When I stayed, my room cost around IDR 175,000 per night. Room prices and availability can change according to the travel dates, so it is worth checking the latest details on Trip.com before booking. Having a scooter is also useful when staying here, especially if you want to explore different parts of Tuk Tuk and Samosir independently. 📍 Day 2: Huta Siallagan and the Batak Culture of Tomok I deliberately kept the second day simple, choosing only two main places where I could learn more about Batak culture. The morning began with a scooter ride to Huta Siallagan, not far from Tuk Tuk. Inside the old village are traditional Batak houses, stone walls and the historic Batu Persidangan, a circle of stone chairs connected to the community’s traditional system of leadership and justice. These are more than attractive backgrounds for photographs. Walking between the houses and listening to the local stories helped me understand that Lake Toba carries far more than natural beauty. It also holds generations of history. Later, I continued to Tomok Village, home to the ancient tomb of King Sidabutar, the traditional Sigale-gale puppet performance and stalls selling local handicrafts. Rather than rushing through everything, I stayed longer at the places that interested me, stopped for lunch and rode slowly back towards Tuk Tuk. There was no need to fit another attraction into the day. 📍 Day 3: Exploring Samosir by Scooter The third day was exactly the kind of travel day I enjoy. There was no strict schedule, just a scooter, an offline map and an open road. My main destination was Air Terjun Sigarattung, also known as Sampuran Na Pitu. It is roughly 9 kilometres from the Tomok area and can be reached by scooter from the main road. It is not the largest or most dramatic waterfall around Lake Toba, but that is part of its charm. Surrounded by greenery, it is a pleasant place to stop, cool down and enjoy a quieter side of Samosir. Still, the waterfall was not the only memorable part of the day. Riding with Lake Toba on one side and green hills on the other, passing small villages and receiving smiles from people along the road made the journey feel alive. Sometimes the best moment of a trip is not an attraction marked on a map. It is pulling over at an unnamed roadside spot, switching off the scooter and looking across the lake for a few quiet minutes. 📍 Day 4: A Slow Day Beside Lake Toba I kept the fourth day deliberately loose. I slept in, had coffee, walked beside the lake and went for a swim. If kayaking or jet skiing interests you, ask your hotel what is available nearby. For breakfast and lunch, I chose Hub Tata Café and Romlan Restaurant & Bakery Café. Jenny’s Restaurant is another option for dinner, particularly for local fish and barbecue. Opening hours can change, so it is worth checking before visiting. Muslim travellers should ask whether a restaurant is halal before ordering, as pork is commonly used in Batak cooking. One place worth saving for late afternoon is Bukit Beta. There is no long list of activities waiting there. Park the scooter, walk across the grassy hill and watch Tuk Tuk and Lake Toba stretch out below. You may eventually forget how many places you visited that day, but sitting quietly above the lake as the evening light changes is the kind of moment that tends to remain. If you have an extra day or prefer travelling with a private driver, Efrata Waterfall near the Tele highlands makes a worthwhile half-day detour. 📍 Day 5: Returning to Medan I did not add another attraction on Samosir on the final day. I had a relaxed breakfast, looked across Lake Toba one last time and took the boat back from the island. Since I had passed through Medan without exploring it on the first day, I made time to visit the city on my return. Coming back to Medan’s movement and traffic after several quiet days on Samosir made the contrast between the two places feel even stronger. Medan is more than a gateway to Lake Toba, and I was glad I had not skipped it completely. 💡 A Few Things Worth Knowing · Bus, boat and hotel prices can change according to the date and season. · Some roads on Samosir are hilly and winding, so avoid riding too fast during rain or after dark. · Carry some cash, a light raincoat and an offline map. · Check the latest ferry schedule on the day of travel and arrive at the port early. · Five days and four nights offers a comfortable pace. Indonesia has no shortage of volcanoes, but Mount Bromo has a landscape that refuses to blend in with the rest. Set inside the vast Tengger caldera in East Java, Bromo rises from a dark Sea of Sand with smoke drifting from its crater. Mount Batok stands beside it, while Mount Semeru appears in the distance. Put them together under the soft colours of sunrise, and the whole place feels almost unreal. To see Bromo at its best, however, the journey does not begin at sunrise. It begins before Surabaya has gone to sleep. You leave the city before midnight, drive through the darkness, change into a 4WD Jeep and continue along a cold, bumpy mountain road. Then, after hours of travelling, the black sky slowly begins to change colour. That is when you understand why so many people are willing to lose a full night of sleep for Mount Bromo. 📌 Bromo at a Glance · Located in East Java’s Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park · Around three hours or longer from Surabaya · Hotel pickup usually takes place between 11 pm and midnight · Main stops include the sunrise viewpoint, Sea of Sand and Bromo crater · Suitable for beginners, but the cold, dust, stairs and overnight journey can be tiring · Most tours without the waterfall return to Surabaya at around 11 am This is not an 11 hour hike. The total time includes the drive from Surabaya, the Jeep ride, waiting for sunrise, exploring the Sea of Sand and visiting the crater. Surabaya or Malang? If distance is the only concern, Malang is closer. The journey from Malang to Bromo can take around two hours, while travelling from Surabaya usually takes more than three hours, depending on traffic and the pickup location. For the whole trip, though, I find Surabaya more practical. I spent four days in Surabaya, and it never felt like a city that should be treated as a quick transit stop. Flight connections are convenient, there are plenty of affordable hotels, and finding restaurants, cafés and shopping areas is easy. Tunjungan Plaza and the surrounding city centre also give you something to enjoy before or after the Bromo trip. Malang wins on road time. Surabaya wins on convenience. If you are planning flights, accommodation, shopping and Bromo together, Surabaya can be the easier base, as long as you do not mind the longer night drive. 🌙 The Journey Before Sunrise Most Bromo tours collect guests from their Surabaya hotels between 11 pm and midnight. From there, it takes roughly three hours or longer to reach the area near the foot of the mountain. You will then transfer to a 4WD Jeep for the climb towards the sunrise viewpoint. The road is rough, full of bends and very different from a smooth city drive. If you get motion sickness easily, it is worth taking your usual medication beforehand. You may arrive at the viewpoint between 3 am and 4 am, while the surroundings are still completely dark. This is also when the mountain air feels coldest. Bring a proper jacket, gloves and something to cover your head. Warm clothing may be available to rent locally, but having your own is more comfortable. Small stalls around the viewpoint often sell hot noodles, cocoa and snacks, which are especially welcome while waiting in the cold. The sky usually begins changing colour from around 4:30 am, although the exact timing depends on the season. As daylight spreads across the caldera, Bromo, Batok and Semeru slowly appear through the morning mist. One small detail surprises many first time visitors. The perfectly shaped cone in the classic Bromo view is usually Mount Batok. Mount Bromo is the lower volcano beside it, with the wide crater and smoke rising from inside. 🌋 After Sunrise The adventure is not over once the sunrise photos are taken. The Jeep continues down into the Sea of Sand, a wide volcanic plain where colourful 4WD vehicles line up beneath the surrounding mountains. It is one of the most recognisable scenes at Bromo and a great place for Jeep photography. Horses are also available for those who do not want to walk across the entire sandy plain. They can take you closer to the crater, but they cannot carry you all the way to the top. You will still need to climb close to 250 steps to reach the crater rim. The climb is not extremely difficult, but it can feel much harder after travelling all night. Volcanic dust is another challenge, so bring a mask or a scarf to cover your nose and mouth. You may also pass Pura Luhur Poten in the Sea of Sand. This Hindu temple is an important spiritual place for the local Tenggerese community, so it should be treated respectfully even when the surroundings are busy with tourists. 📸 Photography and Drone Services Local photographers and drone operators can often be found around the viewpoint or Sea of Sand. A drone video gives you a completely different view of the volcanic plain, the Jeeps and the mountains from above. Before agreeing to the service, ask about the price, video length, number of clips and how the files will be delivered. Drone availability can depend on the weather, wind conditions and park regulations, and it normally costs extra. For Travellers Who Are Afraid of Heights Being afraid of heights does not mean you have to miss Mount Bromo. Some sunrise viewpoints have steep paths, crowded sections and cliff edges with limited barriers. Stay away from the edge, choose a safer viewing spot and let your guide know that you are uncomfortable with heights. The crater rim may also feel intimidating after climbing the stairs. There is no need to force yourself to continue if you do not feel safe. The sunrise viewpoint and Sea of Sand already offer some of Bromo’s most memorable scenery, even without standing beside the crater. 🌊 Make Time for Madakaripura Waterfall If you still have enough time and energy after Bromo, consider adding Madakaripura Waterfall to the trip. Hidden between towering canyon walls, the waterfall offers a completely different side of East Java. After the dry, dusty volcanic landscape of Bromo, walking beneath green cliffs and falling water feels like entering another world. Reaching the inner waterfall area involves some walking, and you should expect to get wet. Wear shoes with a good grip and protect your phone, camera and belongings with a waterproof bag. Bromo is already a tiring overnight journey, so Madakaripura does not have to be included. But if your schedule allows it, seeing both the volcano and the waterfall in one trip makes the long journey even more rewarding. It will also mean returning to Surabaya later than a regular Bromo tour. 💰 Estimated Tour Prices · Shared tour: around S$65 to S$70 per person · Private tour: around S$135 to S$140 or more Prices can vary depending on the pickup point, group size and what is included. Before booking, confirm whether the national park entrance ticket, Surabaya hotel transfer, Jeep and local guide are part of the package. The main reason to consider this hotel is its balance of location and price. It is close to Tunjungan Plaza, making it convenient for shopping, restaurants and cafés. This works especially well if you want to spend some time exploring Surabaya instead of using the city only as a departure point for Bromo. A room may cost around US$19 per night. Rates can change depending on your travel date, so it is best to enter your dates and check the latest price on Trip.com. You can also compare flights and hotels there while planning the trip. Actually, ar first, my expectations before arriving weren’t particularly high. I knew it was a hotel and conference venue in West Jakarta, an area that rarely comes up in conversations about Jakarta's best hospitality options. Those discussions usually focus on the well-known names in Central and South Jakarta, and that I arrived prepared to enjoy a nice wedding mainly because of the people, not just the place. But in the end, this venue earned way more attention than I had initially given it. First thing first, the hotel’s infrastructure genuinely impressed me. Sound systems, lighting, audiovisual equipment, space management — everything operated seamlessly. I want to emphasize that functioning properly isn’t a low standard when managing a large wedding with hundreds of guests and the emotional weight that comes with it. The technical aspects were invisible in the best way, fading into the background so the focus remained on the celebration itself. Additionally, the food deserves special mention because large-scale event catering often disappoints, but Royal Palm clearly exceeded my expectations. The selection was thoughtful, the quality was genuinely good, and people kept going back for more — a true sign of food quality at a big event. The landscape around Mount Batur became more impressive with every kilometre we travelled. We first saw the volcano from a panoramic terrace, then watched it move closer through the open sides of a jeep and finally stood on the black lava fields at its base. Our first stop was Montana Del Cafe in Kintamani. Its terraces face Mount Batur, making the café a convenient place to eat, relax and enjoy the scenery before continuing the journey. We were fortunate to visit on a clear day. The outline of the volcano was fully visible, and the enormous dark lava fields could be seen below. Only a few green areas interrupted the black landscape, creating an unusual contrast. From the terrace, Mount Batur appeared peaceful and distant. We had time to eat, take panoramic photographs and study the route that would soon bring us much closer to the volcano. The next part of the day began when three bright yellow open-top jeeps arrived. As we descended from the café, the scale of the landscape gradually changed. The volcano occupied more of the view with every turn, while the distant black areas slowly became recognisable as rough fields of solidified lava. Eventually, the asphalt road ended and the jeeps continued across the volcanic terrain. The colourful vehicles looked especially striking against the dark ground, and the open design made the ride feel like part of the adventure. The children loved this section and still remember the jeep journey as one of the highlights of our Bali trip. Along the way, we made several stops for photographs. We also left the jeeps and walked across the Black Lava fields beneath Mount Batur. Standing there felt completely different from looking at the same landscape from the café. From above, the lava had looked like a dark pattern. Up close, it was rugged, uneven and almost otherworldly, with the green slopes of the volcano rising behind it. The jeep experience lasted around three hours, including the drive, photo stops and time to explore the lava fields. It allowed us to experience the scale of Mount Batur without climbing to the summit. For me, the most memorable part was seeing one landscape transform through three perspectives: distant and calm from the café, increasingly dramatic from the road, and raw and powerful from the Black Lava fields. Mount Batur is impressive from a distance, but watching the volcano grow larger as we approached made the experience much more memorable. We were lucky with the weather: the volcano was completely visible. From the café, it looked calm and almost unreal, rising above wide black lava fields interrupted by only a few green patches. The distance made it possible to see the entire landscape at once and take panoramic photographs before moving closer. Then three bright yellow open-top jeeps arrived, and the atmosphere changed immediately. We left the café and began descending towards the volcano. Mount Batur appeared larger with every turn, while the black fields below gradually stopped looking like a distant pattern and became the road ahead of us. The asphalt eventually ended, and the jeeps began moving across rough pieces of solidified lava. The open vehicles made the journey feel like a real adventure rather than a simple transfer. This part was especially popular with the children and became one of their favourite experiences of the trip. We stopped several times for photographs and had time to walk across the Black Lava fields at the foot of Mount Batur. Up close, the landscape felt completely different from the peaceful panorama we had seen at the café.
