Chasing the Sunrise at Seongsan Ilchulbong, Jeju Island

As one of Jeju Island’s most iconic landmarks, this volcanic tuff cone, formed over 5,000 years ago, promised breathtaking panoramic views and a deep connection to the island’s geological wonders. Arriving before dawn, I joined a small group of hikers making their way up the well-maintained trail to catch the sunrise. The early morning air was crisp, and with each step, the excitement grew. The 30-minute ascent was invigorating, passing through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the dark sea below. Reaching the summit just as the first light crept over the horizon was awe-inspiring. The golden sun slowly rising over the vast ocean painted the sky with hues of pink, orange, and gold, illuminating the majestic crater at the peak’s center. Standing there, with the cool sea breeze and the breathtaking scenery, I understood why Seongsan Ilchulbong was considered one of the best sunrise spots in Korea. Descending, I explored the surrounding coastal area, where traditional Jeju haenyeo (female divers) showcased their deep-sea fishing skills. Watching them emerge from the water with their fresh catch was a fascinating glimpse into the island’s cultural heritage. With its dramatic cliffs, panoramic views, and rich history, Seongsan Ilchulbong was more than just a scenic hike—it was a profound and peaceful moment in nature, a reminder of the beauty that unfolds when patience meets the rising sun.
