Brilliance at the Overseas Chinese Mansion: A Sense of Calm from a Venerable Hotel No. 2 Wangfujing Street. This address alone is destined to carry countless histories and stories. As one of the landmark buildings in Beijing in the 1950s, the Overseas Chinese Mansion underwent a large-scale renovation in 2021. It's been on my must-visit list ever since, and I finally had the chance to check it out during the Lunar New Year. Overall, the renovation is neither particularly impressive nor disappointing. The design elements commonly used by CCD, such as Southeast Asian rattan weaving and retro glass partitions, are immediately recognizable. Upon checking, it is indeed a CCD production. However, the art sculptures do somewhat alleviate the overly business-like atmosphere. As a renovated older hotel, some inherent flaws, like the ceiling height and the small-framed glass windows in the rooms, are unavoidable. Fortunately, the rooms are still decent enough to stay in. However, the hardware configuration suggests that the owners aren't aiming to compete with the PuXuan Hotel across the street. They are targeting two different customer groups. One of the few highlights is the Atelier Cologne toiletries. I recall the Guangzhou Mandarin Oriental also used this grapefruit-scented one. The refreshing fragrance is quite pleasant. The breakfast selection was surprisingly good. Although there's no à la carte menu, the extensive buffet offers a wide variety, and staff members frequently recommend special snacks at each table. The quality is also excellent. My overall impression after staying here is that while Brilliance at the Overseas Chinese Mansion isn't perfect, it doesn't have any significant shortcomings either. Its convenient location makes it a worthwhile option for both business trips and leisure travel.
