Aso Shrine 3083-1 Miyaji, Ichinomiya-machi, Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM 0967-22-0064 Aso Shrine is an ancient shrine with a history of over 2000 years, enshrining Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Emperor Jimmu and the pioneer of Aso, along with 12 other family deities. The shrine buildings of Aso Shrine were rebuilt between 1835 and 1850 through donations from the Kumamoto Domain. Six buildings, including the main shrine and the gate tower, are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The gate tower, in particular, boasts the largest scale in Kyushu and is said to be one of the "Three Great Gates of Japan." The 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake caused extensive damage to most of the shrine buildings, including the collapse of the Important Cultural Property gate tower and the worship hall.
