Introduction
Some information may have been translated by Google Translate
The sunset in Gannan is famous for its unique colors and light and shadow effects. As the sun slowly sets, the sky is gradually dyed with orange, pink, violet and other colors, as if a very skilled painter of nature is freely painting on the canvas. These colors, together with the rolling mountains in the distance, the quiet grassland nearby and the occasional flying birds, form a moving picture, making people feel like they are in a fairy tale world. In Gannan, there are many ideal places to watch the sunset. For example, Zhagana, Gahai Lake and other places are good places to watch the sunset.

Zhagana – A Hidden Tibetan Village in the Mist

Zhagana – A Hidden Tibetan Village in the Mist

Morning light pierces through the mountain haze, revealing Tibetan wooden houses clinging to the steep slopes of Zhagana like scattered treasure boxes left by the gods. An elderly local turns a prayer wheel as he passes barley-drying racks, his footsteps startling the brass bells hanging from the eaves. Standing at the viewpoint with a handful of cold tsampa, it strikes me—the beauty of this place lies in its indifference to being conquered. **Note:** Altitude 3,000m. Pack a windproof jacket, camera, and patience.

On the Road|Zhagana

On the Road|Zhagana

This is Zhagana in Gannan, a Tibetan village known as the "Eastern Eden", a paradise on earth, surrounded by cliffs. Mountains are mountains and clouds are clouds. It is small, quiet and natural. When you come here, you no longer have to envy the scenery of other countries. : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : The Dari Observation Deck is divided into two floors, and there is a special parking lot on the roadside (it is recommended to arrive before 6 o'clock, and if there are many people, you need to go early to grab a good spot) Yeri Observation Deck: The view is not as good as the Dari Observation Deck, but you can drive up. There are no parking spaces nearby, so you need to find a slightly wider place on the roadside to park (Locke's House is located in Yeri Village. It is the cottage where the traveler Joseph Locke once lived. If you are interested, you can visit it~ It is very close to the observation deck and it takes about 3-4 minutes to walk to it) 🏨Hotel suggestions: The homestays in Zhagana Village are basically rebuilt by villagers from each household, and the environment is relatively general; you can choose to stay in Diebu County. (It is about 30km away from the scenic spot and takes about 30 to 50 minutes to drive) "I have never seen such a dazzling and beautiful scenery in my life. If the author of "Genesis" saw the beautiful scenery of Diebu, he would put the birthplace of Adam and Eve here" -Joseph Locke

Five-Day, Four-Night Itinerary for Gannan

Five-Day, Four-Night Itinerary for Gannan

Zhagana is one of the most anticipated destinations in the Gannan itinerary. In fact, the scenery is stunning—a beautiful village hidden deep in the mountains. For viewing platforms, you can choose Dari Viewing Platform. The Rock Viewing Platform requires more walking, so it’s not recommended. After taking photos at the viewing platform, drive to the visitor center to check out Fairy Beach. No tickets are required, and you can either take a sightseeing bus or walk up a 20-30 minute staircase. For those confident in their stamina, walking is an option, but be prepared for the breathlessness of climbing stairs at high altitudes. Fairy Beach is essentially a large grassland, offering a different perspective to admire Zhagana’s beauty. Here’s a five-day itinerary for your reference: Day 1: Lanzhou—Ganga Secret Land—Labrang Monastery—Xiahe Day 2: Xiahe—Sangke Grassland—Guomang Wetland—Langmu Monastery Day 3: Langmu Monastery—Ruoergai Flower Lake—First Bend of the Yellow River—Tangke/Ruoergai Day 4: Tangke—Zhagana Day 5: Zhagana—Milarepa Buddha Pavilion—Disband in Lanzhou City Highlights: Langmu Monastery mainly involves visiting two temples, one in Sichuan and the other in Gansu. Separate tickets 🎫 are required for each. Generally, visitors only go to one temple. Gerdeng Monastery + Namo Grand Canyon The monastery is simple and unadorned but exudes a sense of solemnity and sanctity. Here, I lit a wishing lamp made of butter, which had a unique milky fragrance. Right next to the monastery is Namo Grand Canyon, where the scenery is beautiful. You can linger for a while, but to conserve energy for the rest of the trip, it’s recommended not to venture too deep into the canyon. First Bend of the Yellow River We didn’t specifically aim for sunset timing. The escalator is a must for convenience and saving energy. The only downside is that the parking lot is a bit far from the exit, so you’ll need to walk a little after getting off. 🏨 Tangke Town A reminder: the cost-performance ratio of accommodations in Tangke Town is slightly lower compared to accommodations of the same price in other regions. Please be mentally prepared for this. However, its proximity to the First Bend of the Yellow River makes it convenient for sightseeing, which can be considered a compensating factor.

Traversing the Loke Road

Traversing the Loke Road

One person, one car, on June 12th, traversing the Loke Road in reverse! Light rain added a layer of uncertainty, and indeed, I experienced altitude sickness! However, while everyone else was busy taking photos at the various checkpoints, I captured different perspectives along the way! This was a unique experience in my life! The night I arrived at Zhagana, I actually felt relieved. The journey through the Loke Road was meant to temper my expectations for Zhagana, just like the innkeeper said, when you come from the Loke Road, there's nothing much to see in Zhagana anymore! Hahaha! 👉Reverse traversing the Loke Road: This refers to taking the Loke Road from Zagulu to Zhagana, which saves the 80 yuan Zhagana entrance fee. At least it was still possible when I went, and the road was clear! 👉About self-driving: It didn't feel difficult, but there was a stretch of road that was in poor condition, which was uncomfortable to drive on. When the road got worse, I just drove slowly and managed to cope! 👉About altitude sickness: Normally, I shouldn't have suffered from it. It might have been due to excessive physical exertion, and not keeping warm enough and getting caught in the wind. So, when you go, make sure to keep warm. In June, when passing the highest point, it can be close to zero degrees, so be sure to prepare warm clothes!

Gannan's 'Little Duku'

Gannan's 'Little Duku'

Starting from Diebu, taking the 'Little Duku' to Langmusi, this route is also quite beautiful. The route from Diebu Town to Tiebu Town to Bengba Village to Huahu is known as Gannan's 'Little Duku', which is actually a township road. Using cycling navigation can ensure it's a small path. The essence of the route is from Bengba Village to Huahu, where the scenery is the most beautiful and the road is the most difficult to travel. There are many places where it's difficult to pass another vehicle, but the scenery changes diversely, with grasslands, valleys, and forests rapidly switching within a dozen kilometers. Huahu-Langmusi-Labrang Monastery After Huahu, heading towards Langmusi, you can pass through the Zoige Grassland; from Langmusi towards Labrang, you can pass through Gaga Sea and Guomang Wetland, both of which have nice scenery. From Labrang to the direction of Zhuoni, you can form a closed loop with the reverse route of the Rock's Road, so you can make a round trip in Gannan without taking a detour.

Zagana

Zagana

Zagana is located in Yiwu Township, Diebu County, Gansu Province. In Tibetan, it means "stone box". It is an ancient cliff city that can accommodate thousands of people from two villages for living and farming. A road winds up to the top of the mountain, with shops lining the street and guest houses scattered all over. Due to its natural advantages of towering and majestic clouds, it has become popular all over the country, giving this ancient village that has been farming and hunting for thousands of years a new vitality. I came to Zagana not to check in, but to challenge the Locke Road by driving alone. The night before, I was worried that all the guest houses in Zagana would be full, so I stayed in the suburbs of Diebu County more than 30 kilometers away from the scenic area. I got up before dawn and went to Zagana. When I arrived, I found out that there were many guest houses and RV campsites after entering the scenic area gate. It can be said that there is no worry about food and accommodation. Driving up the mountain, the narrow village road was full of cars on both sides, and the road and the slope were full of tourists waiting to watch the sunrise. The higher I drove, the narrower the road and the more people. I had a premonition that it would be difficult to go down the mountain, so I took a few photos and turned around and went down the mountain. At more than eight o'clock in the morning when I went down the mountain, as expected, the cars going up the mountain had lined up for several kilometers. Suggestions: 1. Never go there during the summer vacation 2. The capacity of the guest houses in Zagana is large enough, so don't live outside the scenic area gate, 3. The scenery is also beautiful after the National Day, when there are fewer cars and people, and the guest houses are cheaper, within 150 yuan, 4. If you really want to take pictures, stay in the guest house on the top of the mountain, and you can see the sunrise and sunset Photographed on July 30, 2023. Zagana

Beijing-Gannan D6i Runwu

Beijing-Gannan D6i Runwu

To capture the 🌅, you have to get up early, but the heavy clouds and fog prevented a good shot. You can play for 24 hours a day, and it's free. The village has no lights at night, illuminated by moonlight, which is quite atmospheric! Just outside the homestay is the Shimen Viewing Platform. If you walk up for another 5 minutes, there's an even higher viewing platform that you can see from the yard. The Rock Viewing Platform is 10 minutes from the homestay, but it takes 15 minutes to climb up due to the high altitude, or you can ride a horse for a round trip for 100 yuan. Get up early for the sunrise, then go back for breakfast. Then head to the Rock Viewing Platform to see the panoramic view of Yeri Village, which is very beautiful. Runwu Scenic Area is a 15-minute walk from the homestay, entering from the stream, and it's free There are waterfalls inside, and we encountered a group of people, but there were very few people, the air was good, and it was comfortable! Rest by the stream, let the kids play in the water, and the morning just flew by.

A 4,920-Meter Soul Journey

A 4,920-Meter Soul Journey

Exploring Cuomei Peak: At 4,920 meters on the edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, see the mountains, the waters, and yourself At the true highest peak of the Qinling Mountains, seek answers beyond altitude. Most people recognize Mount Taibai as the highest point of the Qinling Mountains. However, Cuomei Peak, the highest peak in the Western Qinling at 4,920 meters, is actually the true summit of the entire Qinling range. It is located in Diebu County, Gannan Prefecture, Gansu Province, hidden on the edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. This mountain not only reshapes our understanding of the Qinling Mountains but is also a secret place where the soul resonates. Itinerary Planning: How to Get There and Route Options Cuomei Peak is situated in the eastern part of Diebu County, Gannan. Driving route: From Diebu County, take National Highway G345 and turn toward Cuomei Peak, then travel about 20 kilometers on bumpy rural roads. Along the way, you will pass two key intersections: at the first intersection, turn right toward Cuomei Peak; at the second intersection, you will see a magnificent golden temple—here, turn right toward Nijiba Village. Vehicle requirements: While regular sedans can pass slowly, an off-road vehicle is more suitable. Hiking route: For outdoor enthusiasts, trekking through Cuomei Peak via Zhagana is a classic hiking route, about 50 kilometers in total, usually taking 3-4 days to complete. This route offers spectacular scenery but is quite challenging, suitable for experienced hikers. Viewing Highlights: Experiences Not to Miss View Cuomei Peak from a distance: Drive to the small stone gate at the end of Nijiba Village, which is the furthest point accessible by vehicle. If the weather is good, you can fly a drone here to get a close-up feel of Cuomei Peak’s grandeur. Hiking exploration: Continue along the mountain trail to experience the steep and towering mountain body of Cuomei Peak more directly. Cuomei Peak remains an unclimbed virgin peak due to its steepness. Crossing the core area of the Die Mountains: For those choosing multi-day hikes, you will face the challenge of crossing several mountain passes above 4,200 meters, with opportunities to admire majestic rock walls, Rubik’s Cube-like stones, and other natural wonders. Practical Tips: Ensure a Smooth Journey Best season: May to October is the best time to visit Cuomei Peak. Heavy snow in winter makes it unsuitable. Gear preparation: Even in summer, bring warm clothing as temperatures are low at high altitudes. It is recommended to carry trekking poles, outdoor shoes, and spare clothes. Accommodation options: You can stay in Diebu County town or experience camping along the hiking route. Altitude sickness: Cuomei Peak is at high elevation; be mindful of altitude sickness and proceed according to your physical condition. Leave no trace: Please follow the “Leave No Trace” principle, take all your trash with you, and preserve the natural environment. See the mountains, see the waters, see yourself Standing before Cuomei Peak, you will eventually understand—we are not just climbing 4,920 meters in altitude, but redefining the height within our hearts; we are not just seeking the summit of the Western Qinling, but the self that can converse with mountains and rivers. This mountain is there, waiting to meet you.
