Date of stay 21/22nd September 2022…. Room 307. On first impressions nicely situated On approaching entrance dirty steps needs a good clean and the arms to velvet settees in reception shone with the dirt from hands. Booking in staff lovely BUT the lift was out of order and we were on third floor I have asthma my neighbour a walking problem ,we have a room with sea view, due to lift being out of order we were offered a 2nd floor room no view we took a look at room ,we declined due to smell in room so we struggle with original 3rd floor room, very large but unwelcoming.The view if we could have seen out of the window properly would have been nice also the window was nailed to the frame shut, No fire escape if needed then came the cobwebs not only in the corner of the ceiling but down the wall ,the wall lights were so dirty inside with dust it did not give the light it should have.head board thick with dust,bed side table thick dust on legs skirting board the same ,then came the shower mat you stand on for safety in the bath was so rank when I picked it up I drop it it was black with scum and black mould. I can’t even guess how long it’s been since it was cleaned. Obviously we called the manager ,he was very apologetic and offered another room, we had already seen another room and was not happy he offered to have our room cleaned while we were out which we agreed to unfortunately who ever he got to go to the room only changed the bath mat and sprayed what ever to make the room smell nice, but as I walked to the television I could see the cobwebs on the light still so again we checked and sure enough the room had not been cleaned, you cannot Blame the manager for this but the staff in housekeeping . The royal is a very prestigious building and is very lucrative for you business but you are letting the side down when you do not take care of the of its decor and clients, as we were not the only ones complaining in some bed rooms the plaster is coming off the wall through damp and smells ,the stairs and bannisters we filthy and I mean filthy,I would not be writing this review if I didn’t think I needed to ,Alex the manager was excellent ,but you won’t have him long if he has to put up with this many complaints, and on the good side, the bar and restaurant were good, again staff were great and we loved Anika who was in charge and she had time for the guests and their needs. The dining area would be at a loss with out her whilst in Whitby we got chatting with the locals and unfortunately the royal is know as a dive which is definitely not good for business. And on a closing point we were cheeky and worked how much you were making @£75 a person not a room a night so before this gold mind falls down around your ears do something get a cleaning team in there and do a deep clean and and builders to do repairs. Our usual hotel of choice for yet another Hartlepool weekend break. Excellent position near train and bus links. No food onsite but plenty of options nearby. A slight problem with the rooms booked due to redecorating commencing whilst we were staying but all handled as well as could be by moving the coffee machines and a chair into the standard room. Internet still included as per original booking and worked as well as anywhere I've stayed recently. No complaints, they have to redecorate sometime. Staff first class and friendly as ever. Will be back for another break in due course.

Visited the hotel for 3 months whilst working away on a project. The hotel itself is clean & modern with everything in place to accommodate all guests. The staff were fantastic, from checking in to travel arrangements and even first aid for when life’s no so great moments occur. Vicky & the team run a tight ship, I’d like to say a special thanks to the following members of staff Andrew , Jay, Kennidi, Katie, Craig, Daniel, Brandon, Dawn, Tia, Charis, Carmen, Louis. All of the above exceeded my guest expectations in going the extra mile to ensure a friendly and welcoming environment. Jay in particular was always a smiling face & on hand to help with any guest needs, a true asset to the hospitality industry. We usually stay at the Fairfax or the Feathers, but they were fully booked. We decided to try the Black Swan, probably shouldn’t have. The hotel is very tired despite the recent renovation - I can’t see where in the upper halls and bedrooms? The room was very basic. Bathrooms need updating, and in fact cleaning before guests arrive. We were very late to check in, despite this we had to ask for the bathroom to be cleaned as it had been forgotten about, hairs, old water marks and tide rings - grim! Though the lady member of staff did apologise profusely and was very nice at both dinner and check out - a real asset to the hotel. A room bug bare for me was nowhere to hang longer items like coats and dresses. The wardrobe was for shirts and folded trousers only. I had to hang long dresses on the light fitting. Also there is no shaver/toothbrush socket in the bathroom. Such little things that would make stays easier. We had dinner, which wasn’t bad for ‘pub grub’ but it wasn’t restaurant quality so to speak. I’d add that the gravy and sauce were more like water in both consistency and taste. Pies were great! Sadly we didn’t get to try the breakfast (which was included in our rate) as despite being a weekend, there are no room-service options and breakfasts aren’t available past 9.30am. So Sunday at 9.41am, we had to trot over to a nearby café to have breakfast. This was very annoying as you can imagine! I wouldn’t recommend staying here with so many better options locally. Which is a real shame, as the food used to be so much better and I would’ve expected after renovations the hotel would’ve seen an improvement. It has not. But, if you just want pub food and you’re in the area then maybe give it a go.
