It's a Relais & Châteaux hotel, but this was the only room available when I made the reservation. I didn't expect it to be so small. If you can afford it, book a larger one. It's comfortable to stay in and there's a Michelin restaurant downstairs.

Excellent service, relaxing and with beautiful views. Nothing not to like. All the facilities of a large 5 star hotel but with the added benefit of personal service with more homely surroundings. The food at both Source and Spice were amazing. The only very minor criticisms are that the swimming pool could do with a clean on the water line and the road to the lake house could be sign posted better.

The afternoon tea at the lake house is a lovely treat. The setting, even on a damp day, is beautiful. It overlooks the water and the decor is tasteful and sumptuous. The service is five star as is the afternoon tea itself. I had a vegetarian afternoon tea which was beautiful. There was a lovely selection of sandwiches and savoury treats, followed by a scone with delicious gooseberry jam and cream, and other tasty cakes. What a wonderful experience.

We visited Gilpin Source for the 3 rd ( and last) time recently . Unfortunately the previous chef has left, and the dining room has been “updated”. It now resembles a bistro rather than a fine dining establishment with no white table cloths to be seen. In the past, there have been lots of “wows” and many photographs of the amazing food. Not this time though. Although very nice, we thought the food and the presentation lacked any wow factor and the camera didn’t come out at all. Service was OK but a bit slow and there didn’t seem to be anyone in charge. On previous visits we have always been impressed by the way it seemed to be run with military precision. (No Sarah)??? Breakfast the next morning was a disaster - I ordered eggs Benedict which when it arrived actually had 2 completely raw, freezing cold eggs under the hollandaise sauce. I asked for my food to be replaced with an omelette, which it was, but without much apology and no explanation of what had gone wrong. My husband had the full english and he enjoyed that. Sadly we won’t return as I fear Gilpin has had its day.

We chose Gilpin for my sixtieth birthday.The food at Source and Spice was exceptional. I had the best birthday as the staff went all out to make my birthday very special. The staff are always very welcoming and attentive.

A memorable 3 night stay. Lodge was luxurious,food in the 2 restaurants was wonderful and all staff were so attentive/friendly. Would be remiss not to mention Grace who went above and beyond. A lovely person who added to our Gilpin experience
