Sense Hotel Sofia has a five star but could do a lot better on the little things, The hotel itself is centrally located and an easy walk to metro station, trams stop and restaurants and bars, the staff are attentive with Prosecco on arrival a nice touch, we did arrive about an hour early and the room was ready so all looked great so far. We thought we had booked breakfast with the original booking but told not the case and we were offered a special price for breakfast which was fine with us. Breakfast was on the 9th floor with great views with an omelette station and buffet with a few cooked items and lots of other choices but you have to wait to be served your tea or coffee instead of being able to help yourself, which meant there were lots of staff milling around watching. Room was spacious and clean on the 4th floor with floor to ceiling windows making for a great view of the cathedral but only big shutters that didn’t block out all of the light in the morning. In the room there was a complimentary small bottle of water each and we could have one coffee or tea per day each from the mini bar which is a little cheap for a 5 star reputation, we have stayed in lesser starred hotels where tea, coffee and all that comes with it (milk and sugar etc) are free and refilled regularly or at request for no extra charge throughout the stay, so Sense lacking on that front. Check out was early on the Friday so we didn’t get a chance to get breakfast but they would not take it off the bill even though we hadn’t paid the bill yet which was a little confusing and felt like they were really penny pinching!

As soon as we walked through the door, we were greeted by a uniformed man, who welcomed us to the hotel and took us to the reception desk, having looked after our bags, which were later taken to our room. The lady at reception treated us with great courtesy and efficiency, and therefore, from the outset, we realised we were in a well-run five star hotel with professional and helpful staff. Our bedroom was stylishly decorated in cool shades of grey, with two wide beds, a panoramic window with a view of Vitosha mountain, and the marble bathroom was of a good size, with modern fittings and a lovely walk-in shower. We had booked the Club Room and were not disappointed with the newly opened Club Lounge. They offer refreshments during the afternoon and then ‘happy hour’ from 6-8 pm. We found the service really excellent, with staff keen to help, and spent delightful early evenings having drinks and eating an enticing array of canapés. Breakfasts were also excellent in the Europa restaurant with a wide selection of cooked and cold options from the buffet, and dishes cooked to order such as omelettes and eggs benedict. One last point to mention - we found the Chief Concierge - Todor Goranchovski - most helpful in booking us restaurants and directing us to some notable attractions in Sofia: he was great. The Intercontinental is really a top class hotel and we would not hesitate to stay there again - thank you to everyone who made our stay memorable.

Rila Hotel Sofia

The Rila Hotel is an old hotel with old facilities, shoe box size elevators but in a very central part of the town near to everything. Our first night we stayed in a standard small room ( I think it cost $46 maybe $50 with taxes etc )that was not satisfactory. The next day for $10 - $12 per day upgrade we moved into a double size spacious/suite room with 2 balconies !! Very nice to sit out on the balcony with the afternoon setting sun and to wash out a few cloth items and let the sun dry them. Neither of the rooms had shower curtains in the bathrooms. When i enquired about this I was told this was done because of covid. Hhmmm not sure how a shower curtain has any bearing on covid ? We stayed a total of 7 nights and only once, after I called down to the front desk, did a chamer maid come up and take out the garbage and change the towels. To be fair my girlfriend has a habit of spreading all her things all over the 2 rooms so we hesitated to make a fuss. I can imagine a maid being shocked to walk in and not know what to do in all the mess. Breakfast cost extra and was only ok but enough to start the day. There was a large flat screen TV which we never turned on, there was no safe deposit box in the room but we were able to leave our valuables downstairs at the front desk. There are other hotels also nearby that are probably more renovated and modern and most likely cost a little more. On our next trip we most likely will see about other options. The staff was friendly and helpful. I guess it depends on what your expectations are but for us it worked.

I've never stayed anywhere else in Sofia so cannot comment on whether this is great for Sofia, but international 4* standard, it isn't. Most of the staff are lovely, apart from the member of staff who decided one evening that we were not allowed to have a glass of wine in the lobby bar because the bottle of wines were ”reserved” and ”for show” (the excuse changing from one minute to the next.) He couldn't explain who or why they were reserved or for show. The room servicing is, *interesting*. They say in the information in the room that the rooms are serviced daily. On the first day it wasn't serviced at all. The second, I asked it to be serviced and the towels replaced which they did but then (not joking) they screwed up the cover on the bed and put it in the corner, made half an effort to pull up the duvet, emptied a bin and did nothing else. Coffee and tea making facilities in the room is a real plus but they were not refreshed / refilled during our stay either, even when the room was ”serviced”. The bed was comfortable but one of those fit together beds rather than a true king size. It was huge but possible to get a bit caught in the middle. That said though, we didn't struggle with noise as other people did. The breakfast is fine. Typical central European type stuff and not the best quality but fresh fruit is always welcome. If it's a choice between room only at a cheaper price, I wouldn't recommend paying extra for it though. The door lock was a bit temperamental. It's worth checking it's genuinely locked behind you as ours didn't unless we carefully engaged the catch. There are safes though. The lifts were a bit dodgy as well. One obviously breaking down from time to time during our stay and be warned you need your room card to go up or down. Location wise it's superb and I'm not saying I wouldn't stay there again but for the price, which is not cheap for Sofia, the service needs a bit of an uplift. Also some attention to detail in the rooms would be good with a slight tear in the voile, wallpaper lifting etc. For British visitors though as this hotel is part of a Cooperative organisation, they have pictures of the first Rochdale COOP in some of the corridors. A funny little quirk if you know Rochdale. It's not the place you'd choose to decorate anywhere.

The hotel's rooms definitely didn't live up to our expectations. The room was well heated and there always was hot water, but I had to shower the whole bathroom, just to take a shower. I have really strong doubts about the cleaning, too. The owner was quite friendly in general, but didn't support us on an argue we had with a taxi driver, who ripped us off with the money exchange and took an unreasonably big amount of money. He actually called us ”malakas” for not willing to leave the poor taxi driver a tip.For me that was the worse part. Not protecting your client and encouraging the taxi drivers' behavior(who, believe me, are quite infamous) is the main reason for this bad review and why I will not prefer it again in the future.

Superplace, directly on a corner at the top of Vitosha Blvd. Ideal for tourists because many attractions are to be reached foot. For the eye nicely furnished rooms, the material used is of lower quality. Cheapest spanwood or press paper or anything. The floors of the shublade are partially unleashed because they are nailed with mini-stops that can also be unloaded with light loading. Water savings rate of the toilet without function. The beds were okay - with good sleep comfort. However, we had also a room back - which was very quiet. Afterwards it was likely to be noisy. The room was not cleaned, but towels were changed and waste packers (which must also be used for toilet paper) were empty. Reception at arrival was very nice, with instruction to rooms and buildings. Good solution with coded doors (input door building, input door floor and room door). So you don't have to take care of keys. Afterwards a young lady sat at the reception that was completely inappropriate for the job m.E. We had a simple question. She looked up a little from the PC, answered 'no!' and immediately looked back into the PC - probably in the hope that we would go back. I was tending to apologize for the disturbance until I realized we were the guests in the hotel. We have avoided any further contact. So no one should count with the reception as a contact.

Good location not far from all the activities and to the public transport. Walking distance to Nevresky Cathedral and St Andrew Russian Style Church with onion domes. Friendly staff probably family owned but housekeepers do not communicate in English. Good breakfast and varied. Big room with terrace but could not manage to operate the AC .

Me and my husband stayed there for 3 nights. Lots of dust in the room, like no one cleaned areas at the head of the bed for years. The same situation is in the bathroom, broken drain plug in the bathroom tub, mold, rusty stains. We had great expectations regarding this hotel. We do not recommend it. Three stars are for the friendly English speaking staff, delicious breakfast and central location of the hotel.
