Rotorua Citizens Club

This accommodation is advertised as a 'club', however it is not like any club in Australia but more of a pub. How it managed to get an 8/10 rating I have no idea. The entry is located around the back, reception was unmanned, check-in was via pressing a button and waiting for bar staff to let you through locked doors that open onto pool table area with many men staring as you enter. The worst aspect was the smell and the carpet that you stick to. Fortunately I requested to view the room prior to check-in. It was not for me. I couldn't see myself putting up with the smell for four nights. The rooms are so dated that all the cleaning in the world wouldn't make a difference. Whilst searching on my phone for alternative accommodation I was abused by reception staff and 'told' that I had to stay or be financially penalised. So patronising to a potential guest (62 yr old woman). If you want cheap this is it.

Terrible experience couldn’t even check in. Messaged our arrival time of 6pm. When arrived called the number on the door multiple times and had ******* call. No one answered. Finally had to rent an Airbnb last minute. Still haven’t received my money back. No communication on check in or that the building is closed on Monday when I messaged about check in. ******* is no help and despite also calling said they wouldn’t give me my money back. Didn’t see the inside but looked pretty crappy from the outside. If want to be stranded with no cell service in the rain trying to figure out a new place to stay can try on here. Otherwise would definitely avoid.

It's fine for a home base while you're exploring Rotorua. The fans in the rooms provide next to zero airflow and there's no AC, so your only option is to leave the windows open. Unfortunately, it's right next to the main road so you'll hear yelling, driving, etc right below your window. Also there's a street lamp right outside the room we had so it was either no air flow or light sounds bugs in the room and a slightly cooler room. It sounds worse than it is but for the price we were happy with it overall.

The hotel was close to the lakeside where we were to attend the outdoor concert the day we'd booked for an overnight stay so it was very handy and very affordable...the room was very warm and inviting the beds were comfortable and the shower was bliss to hop under after spending a night out in the cold.

Very unfriendly staff. Everything seems to be abandoned. The interior of the hotel is very old, dirty, dark and overall unpleasant. Far too expensive for such quality. Would not recommend it.

I just love the convenience of when your hungry can walk down to the club restaurant and have a kai have a few drinks at the bar if you want. The location of in the middle of town. how clean, safe access in and out of the upstairs to our rooms. all the necessities you need for a night or two. This is our go to place when staying in Rotas

I like the location and the people staffing unfortunately I did not like fluorescent lighting no desk lamps an additional PowerPoint might have been helpful unfortunately our fridge didn't work and our ceiling fan didn't work either. was staying for one evening wasn't too much of an inconvenience I would probably stay here again it has everything you need without the extreme costs thank you

Basic accommodation. Shower wasn't cleaned from previous stayers and overall was not as clean as I would expect. When room service came after the first night they left the room door wide open with all our belongings inside. We were out the whole day so not pleased when we got back to see that.

This place was very well located and everyone was very nice. We didn't know that a "Citizens Club" is like a VFW in the US, so it was a funny surprise being the only under 55 at the bar/restaurant area. The free parking and wifi were solid. The room had every basic you'd need, I think the only thing was not having aircon was a little warmer in summer, but they did supply a fan which was nice.
