I've been visiting this hotel, first as the whipper-inn, now as The george for about 10 years or so. Over those years I've seen a obviously once high end hotel fade and not just look tired, but neglected. This is the first time back since the refurb and new ownership, and it was great to see the start of the transformation back into a must visit venue. The communal areas had clearly undergone a thoughtful refurbishment, and on checking in around 2.30pm, it was good to see the bar and small outer sitting area, buzzing with people........something I haven't seen on my last few visits, more abandoned spaces rather than an active space. We stayed in a superior room, the Cottesmore, and it was a great space, well decorated and dressed to match the ambience and history of the hotel. A very large bed, comfortable and cosy, to match the rest of the room. Like all old buildings going through refurb, some work still to do. the view from the large bay window overlooked the market square, but the 'blown' double glazing meant you couldn't fully appreciate the outlook due to condensation. After a night of heavy rain, a leak appeared in the bathroom ceiling, but was soon cleared up when brought to the attention of the owner. The breakfast was a good full English, with plenty of top ups of toast and coffee. The breakfast waiter was very friendly, helpful and chatty, always a good start to the day. I'm looking forward to returning in the near future to experience the next phase of the refurb, my only concern will be that the revitalisation of the hotel might make booking a room more difficult!

Stayed here for a change of scenery get away, and also as we previously lived in the area. Firstly the staff are all great, welcoming and try their best to give good service levels. Our first room had a very persistent and loud dripping tap from the en-suite. Raised this with the staff and we were moved to another room (Zetland). Unfortunately this had an unusable shower, due to the shower head bracket being loose. Gave up at this point raising the issues, as we were only here for a limited time and had little confidence we would not have further issues with other rooms. Management need to seriously snag these problems, there are numerous examples where corners are being cut (home made toilet roll holder in our 2nd room).

I booked for a group of 11 for dinner. Nicholas was efficient and handled our booking and menu choices perfectly. At dinner we were looked after by Gregory who I cannot praise highly enough. He appeared to be the only person looking after the restaurant. Gregory worked extremely hard to make sure all our requests were met and was courteous and professional. The perfect waiter! The food was excellent, not one single complaint from any of my 11 friends. The restaurant was immaculate with lovely relaxed ambience. Thank you

New owners change name back to Hotels Original Name: A Warm Welcome at The George Inn Oakham Escaping todays showers, I stumbled upon the delightful haven of The George Oakham. Stepping inside, I was greeted by a warm and inviting a**osphere, the perfect refuge from the showery weather. The menu offered a tempting selection of food, and I opted for a delicious fresh sandwich, accompanied by a steaming cup of coffee and a homemade biscuit. The sandwich was bursting with flavour and perfectly complemented by the rich coffee. The biscuit, however, was the true star of the show - a delightful homemade treat that added a touch of homey charm to the experience. But The George's warmth extends beyond just its food and ambiance. It's a place that truly welcomes all visitors, including our furry companions. Dobby was made to feel just as welcome as myself, which is a rare and appreciated quality in any establishment. Overall, The George Oakham offers a comfortable haven, delicious food, and a friendly a**osphere that caters to both humans and their canine companions. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle, be it for a quick coffee break or a leisurely lunch.

We called a booked in for valentine’s night we were greeted by lovely open fires and a very pleasant owner who asked us to be seated and would bring us over a complimentary glasss of Prosecco which was very tasty and refreshing .Everyhing was done in a very professional manner and the overall of the hotel has been done to a very high standard .We thought it couldn’t get any better but it did when our waiter introduced himself Gregory he put us at ease straight away and was so efficient and professional without being over the top We had such a lovely time I thought I had to write this review.Well done to the owner I wish you success in the future you so much deserve and when in the area we Will definitely revisit another big shout out for Greg a valuable asset to your hotel.John Gascoigne

Firstly the staff are welcoming & very professional, we had booked the restaurant mid week for a Chris**as get together with friends. Cosy Lounge area for drinks prior to eating, beautiful lighting that enhanced the Chris**as decorations. Dining room is small, our table was central and well presented. Unfortunately the food was not exciting, lacked flavour, warm not hot ! wine was good, service attentive and efficient. Only 1 other table busy. So much time and effort has gone into the renovation of the inn, somehow it lacks a**osphere and certainly customers.

We stayed at this hotel many years ago and were very disappointed with it, it was very tired. However, we visited it just for drinks initially and were very impressed with the friendliness of the staff, the decor and comfy furniture and the cosy log fire. The bar staff were very attentive and couldn’t do enough for you, even serving you drinks from the comfort of your chair. We ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was excellent, fresh and hot. Would definitely recommend and will definitely return. The new owners of this hotel have certainly ‘turned it around’ and deserve to do well.
