We were last here 10 years ago and just love the changes that have been made by the new owners. It is SO very relaxing here and you can't help but, switch off. The gardens are a real work of art, absolutely gorgeous. With roaring fires and candlelight throughout the house in the evenings and chairs placed around the gardens where you can relax, and listen to birdsong while watching the ducks fly by, it's just such a lovely environment. We were greeted on arrival by the cheerful Fred, who also served us breakfast both days, and shown to The Writers Studio - lovely! Very bijou, and I absolutely fell in love with the shower room and the fabulous Aesop products. Maybe it's because we own a holiday rental we feel the laminate floor let the studio down (wood flooring would have been much better), if there's a cork screw they should provide wine glasses, maybe as there's umbrellas in the house there could be at least one in the studio and (hubby's request) a toilet seat that doesn't fall down! While there's abundant heating and hot water, the boiler clicking on and off every ten minutes did affect my sleep quality enormously. They now serve only breakfast in the house with lunch and dinner in the Garden Café, so we had pre booked for our first night. Service unfortunately was very mediocre and food just didn't hit the spot. While the servers were extremely friendly we'd to ask for our drink order to be taken, then (after our empty glasses sat for some time) ask for the wine we'd ordered. Wine, after bring poured, was left on the table and we'd to then ask for a wine bucket! As the wine bucket arrived we asked if we could book for the following evening. Starters arrived but mine was not what I'd ordered and by the time my correct order arrived hubby had finished his. Not a good start. We'd ordered a pizza to share with a side of Ragu but unfortunately the pizza took some real work from us both to cut, very very chewy. The ragu was however, delicious. Dessert was the star of the evening, my chocolate tarte was one of the best I've ever eaten. We reminded the server about our request for the following evening and was then told told they were full. With only 2 other guests in the hotel that night it must have been non guests dining. However, after our dining experience we weren't too disappointed. We think there were 3 servers on, and it's not a huge restaurant, so there really wasn't any excuse for our poor service. We would certainly recommend Boath House and we'll hopefully return but would book to stay in the house as that clicking boiler has put me off staying in the adorable studio again.
