Avoid like the plague. This hotel has seriously gone downhill. Shabby, tatty and grubby, in need of a complete refurbishment. If there is nowhere else available in Merthyr and you end up here, do not stay in Room 202. Bed very uncomfortable, and don't even look at the matress! The extractor fan for the kitchen is below the window and sounds like a train passing and the accompanying smell of cabbage or fry up - depending on the time of day - is definitely one to be avoided. Bathroom old fashioned with grubby shower curtain. Some parts of the skirting board missing and sticky light switches above the bed. Staff very unprofessional. Witnessed an argument between owners and staff in the bar area. The Welsh breakfast was cheap and nasty, breakfast staff miserable and again complaining. Shame really as this used to be a basic but welcoming, clean hotel. Staff used to be happy, now they look downtrodden. I understand that there are new owners so hopefully they will turn things around otherwise there is going to be the inevitable closure.

Awful - don’t book here. Not sure where to start….. positive - lovely Ellie on reception, never has a member of staff remained so cheerful in such an awful hotel environment, thank you Ellie. The rest: The noise in room 202 was reminiscent of the room I had in halls of residence situated next to the boiler room. The toilet seat fell off if you had the audacity to use the loo. No hairdryer. The Elastoplast used to plug the hole in the toilet door lock. Stepping into the bath I reached for the towel rail which promptly came away in my hand. The stains all over the carpet 🤮 The carpet felt tacky to the touch & we really didn’t want to take our shoes off. The Welsh breakfast consisting of 1 sausage, 1 rasher of bacon, 1 slice of toast & beans that tasted of Parma violets - 2 plum tomatoes & 1 fried egg. All served with a dour look 👀 of defeat. The crockery was stained & the urn was full of luke warm water for tea/coffee. When we asked if we could use the kettle from our room to make tea they turned the temperature up on the urn - the waitress then stuck her finger in a sample of water & decreed it hot enough for tea!!! Breakfast room was freezing. The bar closes at 9.30pm & when we asked the night porter for some drinks we were told a firm “no but there’s a garage down the road to buy some drinks.” Sat afternoon the owner was in reception with the staff & we overheard him complaining to them - not the staff at fault. He needs to spend some money on the place. We were lucky - a family group meeting up for a great weekend, we laughed our way through it. Next time we get together in Merthyr we’ll avoid The Bessemer like the plague.

Where to start..... On arrival we where told that they had run out of electronic key cards... the receptionist opened the the door with her card and promised she would return in 5 minutes with a replacement card from the sister hotel..as the card operates the the electricity we where left sitting in the room with no power or light!!!! half hour later the key card arrives. As another review said the noise from the floors creaking was quite shocking... the room itself was grubby boarding on dirty.. marks all over the walls with dirty hand prints on the walls too... no soap in dispensers completely empty...and its very very dated... then a phone call in the morning asking what car park we where in as they had delivery's and didn't want our car bumped!!!!! really??? it turned out that people collecting Sunday dinners block the car park and you cannot get your car out... i would never book this hotel again... i would rather sleep in the car... you have been warned..!!!!

Well where do I begin? Staff are just not remotely interested in their customers. Electronic door keys work on the odd occasion. Rooms are very dated with a major refurb needed. Floor boards creak unbelievably throughout the hotel. Empty bar bottles are tipped for refuse at 4am! Meals are very strange... You don't get served together and at breakfast there's not a piece of fruit, whether fresh or tinned and breakfast times close earlier on a weekend than in the week!? Veggie options were non existent and a poor chappie who was gluten free got buggar all as the didn't have any cereal or bread! Don't bother at that cost you can stay at the Premier Inn with breakfast included. These opinions are from my personal stay.

Do not stay at this hotel if you want a restful night. Terrible noise in room 202 from fans below, reduced a bit in the night but still noticeable. Creaky floors being used by someone somewhere woke me at 2.45am. Pointed out the noise twice but nothing was done. Cheap mattress had seen better days and was lumpy. Dirty coffee cups at breakfast. Receptionist called me ‘darling’ all the time as if that made everything ok - but really she couldn’t have cared less. Stay anywhere else but here if at all possible!

We had a group of 11, so required approx. half the rooms at the hotel. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the bar area was perfect for our group to meet and socialise. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating to our needs which made for a wonderful long weekend.

Recently stayed here as a base for a bit of " hill walking". It has a great location, being out of town abit away for the noises and distractions of Mertha. On entry it is a little bit like " the hotel time forgot". But look past that. Comfy beds, lots of hot water, very clean and tidy, Friendly staff, lots of parking, Great food. ( the full English could be better, but was always full after it) The carvery is a must after a long day on the hills. Yes there are more modern hotels out there. But this has that cosy, family feel and has a great price. Will I return. Definitely YES.
