Visiting this beautiful hotel/resort was organized for us by Up Norway, a trip planner I’d highly recommend. Our family six was traveling to Norway for three weeks and our visit here to Knutholmen was part of that trip. Our accommodations were three nights in a four bedroom apartment. This included breakfast every morning and a wonderful four course dinner on our arrival day. Our four bedroom apartment looked brand new. It was spotless with a great view from the balcony of the harbor. And the refrigerator had some of the local beer and other treats. We were picked up from the ferry by one of the owners, Jan Frederick. He drove us right to our four bedroom apartment where we changed and headed to the restaurant for a delicious dinner. We would see Jan Frederick again the next day when he guided three of us up a steep, rocky trail to the highest Seacliff in Europe, Hornelen. When we returned from our hike we met up with the rest of our party and had another delicious dinner in the restaurant. All six of us enjoyed a massive seafood platter. The bar there is a lot of fun and we all enjoyed some aquavit. The next day might have been the highlight of our entire three weeks. A private trip for the six of us on a working fishing boat! Roy took us on his fishing boat through local waters. He had previously set up crab traps and we happily hoisted them up and kept some large crabs. We also jigged for mackerel and caught several. Roy then cooked them all up and we enjoyed them for lunch. Roy grew up on a remote island nearby and took us there. We explored the island and his childhood home. He showed us the inside of his home and we asked about pictures on the wall. One was a newspaper article of a rescue at sea that had his father saving another boat and crew. His dad rowed out on a dark, stormy night to assist the lost crew. It was a wonderful experience to see what rural island life was like in Norway 40 or 50 years ago. Roy was kind and generous with his time and our whole family thought that this was our most authentic experience in Norway. On the same day, toward the end of the afternoon, our whole family spent several hours sea kayaking in the local waters with Peder. It was a gorgeous, calm day and the clarity of the water was stunning. Viewing the village of Kalvag, the rolling fields, church and fish houses from the water made for excellent photos, especially in the afternoon light. When we returned we quickly got into our swimsuits and enjoyed an hour in the sauna that we had previously reserved. Then, another excellent dinner at the restaurant. I am not a foodie but I live in Seattle and know seafood and I would have to say that the fish and shellfish I enjoyed were amazing. Before we knew it it was time to leave as we had an early flight out of Floro. What would have been a very long van ride to the airport was made quick and fun by a speed boat ride provided by Knutholmen. We felt like we were in a James Bond movie. In the apartment when
