Found on a tiny, picturesque quay on the dramatic coastline at the bottom of the village of Clovelly, The Red Lion is a haven; friendly, attentive staff, a warm welcome, luxurious rooms, delicious food & a great range of local beers & ciders, as well as a superb cellar of wines. We stayed in the sail loft adjacent to the hotel - huge, comfortably equipped & warm rooms, but up a flight of outside steps & along a balcony, which was challenging in the blustery conditions, and very slippery when wet. The hotel & its' restaurant are as popular in the winter as during the summer, so BOOK! Room, dinner, breakfast, parking.....book! Our room had stunning sea views, and we fell asleep & woke up to the sound of the surf crashing into the rocky shoreline. There is a cosy snug bar warmed by fire, a larger bar overlooking the quay (both of which serve excellent food) and a more fine dining restaurant above, again with great views. Staying gives you free access to everything in Clovelly village and Clovelly Garden, a valuable 'extra'. Access and hotel parking are down a precipitously steep single track road with passing places; only for those with good brakes & strong nerves.
